  • Matt attends the Motor Press Guild's annual track day, where he gets to drive a wide variety of cars at Willow Springs. To Celebrate passing 300,000 RUclips Subscribers, we're uploading 11 videos in 11 days!
    Today we're driving the Twin-Turbo, 420 HP Cadillac CTS VSport. Until the full on V comes out next year, this is the fastest CTS you can buy, and its engine does not disappoint. But about those brakes....

      GM, Ford, and Chrysler are really killing it these past years. Add in Tesla and I would say that this decade is akin to the mid/late 60s for American Automotive. We still have the Mustang GT350, GT500, next Ford GT, next gen Camaro ZL1 and Z/28, the Corvette Z06 and ZR1, ATS-V, CTS-V, next gen Viper and whatever the Hellcats have unleashed plus the re-focusing of the Dodge brand. After Ferrari, Jeep is easily the most valuable brand under Fiat-Chrysler, and who knows what Tesla will do. America is about to take over performance while redefining affordability and efficiency.
      My only worry is that eventually Tesla will need to be sold to someone else. BMW seems the most likely, but Telsa would save Hyundai-Kia luxury brand dilemma.

    • @highjix
      @highjix 9 лет назад

      Young Knives
      I don't really keep up with Tesla so I don't know this but, so why do you think they will need to be sold off to another company?

    • @MarimbaNation
      @MarimbaNation 9 лет назад

      highjix Tesla cant afford to compete in the mass market. They found a niche and a great product, but the auto industry is hypercompetitive. In the time it takes Tesla to add two more models, we may have Alfa Romeo back in the US with 6 or 7 models. They cant keep up, so sell high and when every loves you. Tesla will still have the battery plant.
      Dont be surprised if in four years all models have a hybrid option and "Telsa Batteries" are as common a part as "Brembo Brakes" on cars.
      Plus I think the SpaceX program is a bigger deal, and selling Tesla will pay for a lot of the factory costs and push the space program forward.

    Maybe it's just the video and how it picked up the exhaust note/engine noise but it sounded great to me. Then again, I'm partial to 6 cylinders and revs. Was it really that bad?

    I just got out of a 2009 CTS-V... You are right about the magnetic ride control... It was by far the most responsive car I have driven. And, it also has a boost gauge! I saw it moving about when I matted it, even got some dashcam footage of it. But, that gauge pales in comparison with the sound coming from the front and the back.
    But 60 grand... In 2009 that got you 556/551 from Cadillac. Somehow I feel we're being cheated.

    How are the brakes spongy on big willow? Not a big braking track.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  9 лет назад +6

      ***** these cars are getting lapped constantly all day long, and most people aren't doing cool down laps. So the brakes get moderately hot on the track, but then people come straight in, where the heat just builds, and then people go back out with them. Wildly varying degrees of skill from driver to driver, too. Michael Harley from Autoblog had the car before me, and he's very quick, and mentioned the brakes were warm when I got in. In the real sports cars, some of the manufacturers will put RBF600 fluid in, to help keep the brakes alive. Not sure if caddy did that here.

    TheSmokingTire, how does this compare to the M4 in terms of speed and handling? Which do you prefer?

    • @alk3myst
      @alk3myst 3 года назад

      Older question, but ATS-V is more the M4 (M3) comparison. The VSport is a larger car, it's very capable though. Lightning Lap / VIR for the VSport is 3:06.8, for the 2015 M4 is 3:00.7 and ATS-V 2:59.8. I needed a larger sedan and the V3 would not be as practical as my VSport is daily for my mileage. The CTS V3 turns a 2:56.8.

    I had no idea how fast this car was until I was following my sister, in hers, onto a freeway onramp and she just disappeared. I dislike Cadillac smoothing out the rear trunk, as I was a fan of the hard edges on the outgoing generation. That said, I think it will look good as a wagon and am considering purchasing one once the CTS4 Wagon is released. The big caveat is the price and interior, CTS V-sport is a $60-70K car, however the interior does not feel on par with similar priced German machines. It isn't bad, it just isn't that good and in my personal opinion the chrome bits don't help. The good news is Cadillac dealers seem to come down a lot on the price, making this an even more competitive car that it initially seems.

      Caddy has similar cars now called the Blackwing series. You can still get a vSport equivalent and still get the old CTS-V supercharged V-8 power in the Blackwing... They basically just re-named the cars...And they STILL drive and handle better than the competitor cars from Mercedes, BMW and Audi...The BMW's and Audis drive and handle like boats, the Mercedes is better than both, but still won't handle like the Cadillacs...
