I think what makes Adam Driver's acting in this sketch work is, other than the fact he's an excellent actor, he's playing it completely straight; not for the laughs. Paradoxically, it makes it hilarious.

I've been a science teacher for 12 years now. This is actually scarily accurate. I was talking about momentum in class the other day. The word momentum was written on the board. I asked the class a question (the answer was momentum) and they had no idea, so after heavily hinting and pointing at it on the board, I told them, "I'll give you a hint, it starts with an m and ends with an omentum." The next answer I got was "Matter?" SMH

I just watched one of these Science Room sketches, and Jason Sudekis was playing the teacher. I have to say that Adam Driver does a solid job for a guy who doesn't do sketch comedy for a living
OMG!! He threw that tape dispenser like my 4th grade teacher Ms. Kangus did when she threw a stapler across the room when some of the kids kept talking and weren’t paying attention; she lost she sh*t and that stapler went flying and she screamed “I’m tired of the shenanigans”, it was shocking but funny 🤣😆. Ahhh, the things teachers could get away with in the 80s 🤣.

I am originally from nc. In the seventh grade our science teacher was talking about the venomous and non venomous snakes of NC. The next day two of my classmates brought a metal bucket to my classroom. In the bucket was a big fat rattlesnake coiled up and you could hear the taping of the rattle against the metal can. Our science teachers eyes were as big as saucers. He left with the bucket and when he returned he wrote on the chalkboard “please do not bring any snakes, lizards or black widow spiders to class”. Growing up in NC was wild. Seattle is a bit more tame and luckily no venomous snakes

He just really gets into the roles he's given. Just look at the H.R Pickens sketch where he stabbed the bird prop on the ground. You can tell it was 100% him just believing it's something his character would do because he surprised the heck out the castmates who weren't expecting it at all.

This is a lot like actually teaching science to kids.
It is a lot like teaching today's 10th graders in a public school.
I would actually appreciate their unconventional interpretation of the communication patterns we adults take for granted. It's so refreshingly childlike! I'm always charmed by how curious and confused children can come across before their brains develop the corrupting sense of shame that often makes them so dull and lifeless by the time they reach adulthood...
I think that's the point. The pbs shows are so rehearsed and scripted that if you actually brought children candidly onto these shows the producers and professionals would lose their minds.
One way that it matches my experience is that the teacher stated air is mostly made up of oxygen. (It's nitrogen, I think.)
