Love the Rick. so many groups used it after the Beatles did. I only discovered maybe 3 or 4 years back that the Rick was an American company. There is a lot more info on the net about all that stuff.
Great guitar, great song to cover, and nice playing, too. The Beatles had a clean sound for most songs in their career. Clean is the way to go. Ricks make wonderful clean sounds.
Yes they do! I find the guitar is very touch sensitive, the harder you hit it the louder it screams. Sometimes it will even drive the tubes in the amp a little more and dirty up the sound. Perfect for all my loving and i want to hold your hand.
ForeverFabFour I think the early Beatles, like the Hamburg days or in the Cavern in Liverpool, used to play hard and have a raw edge sound. I think Brian Epstein and George Martin had them tone it back a bit. The Kinks are more aggressive strummers. For whatever the reason, I think it turned out better/right, with the Beatles clean sound.
Wasn’t there in the beginning discovered them in about 1972 and have been enjoying and playing them ever since. They inadvertently wrote a song about me, as I’m currently 64 😂
I first heard this song when I was four years old in 1969. I had previously only heard country and western songs on the radio in my dad's pickup. Then one day at a neighbors house this came on their radio. Everything changed after that.
I'm really impressed with your level of knowledge on these parts. You're getting details that most of the pro tribute bands miss. Not sure how the hell you know what you do at your age, but congratulations nonetheless!
In 1964 I cut my teeth on these songs at the age of eight. So glad to see your interest in the Beatles. You have his mannerisms down. Up down strokes are awesome. Rarely done.
Even I can tell how John gave more than required, over and above the call of duty, in composing his part of the song. The Beatles always gave a bit, or a lot, extra. And, that's what made them more than just a bunch of strummers.
You really nail the super aggressive right hand of John. He really seemed do dig in heavy into every beat. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent with the world.
Voicings that I've never really heard on the record. THIS is the song that catapulted them and the British Invasion to life. It was modern for its time BUT still had that Hamburg/Cavern Club rhythmic feel to it. And John was the rhythm behind the rhythm.
Very well done!!. In retrospect i now realise what a super talent John Lenon was. Thank you for showing us his talent and of course your's as well. Truly a pleasure watching you play. Deep respect from India. Roby.
Man, I learned to play at Fenton's Music Store in Mt Vernon IL. One day in 1962 George Harrison walked in and took down a red Rickenbacker and asked Red Fenton if he could get one in black to match John Lennon's. Red said Sure, but it'll take a week. As soon as Harrison left, Red Fenton stripped that red guitar down and painted it black. I was there. And guess what I've got underneath of my bed! You take care.
Joey Bologny, stories like yours make me wish very badly that iwas born in about 1944 instead of 1990. I am happy that you were able to get your hands on that little gem. Peace!
Never happened at least in 1962,. George came to America in 1963 to visit his sister Louise but I don’t think he was near NY. Also, John’s Rick was natural wood in 1962 I believe.
hi I was looking and listening to your video, what an amazing performance by you on your Rickenbacker guitar. I didn't realize John's part was so hard, and to top it off he sang while playing . .lol...I just love the sound of the Rickenbacker guitar.
Very nice. John actually ended the song on a bar G major chord, not an open G. On the "I can't hide", he's playing an open D major and hammering on and off the F# note on the fourth string, fourth fret. It''s clear to see both of these on the Beatles Ed Sullivan performance. John often played an open D major with that F#.
Yeman you got the ,feel just right :) I've been studying The Beatles since 1982 and playing guitar since then too so I know when someone's getting it right. That percussive attack you get by playing with the amount of pressure applied to the neck...Lennon was always unique and I'd say to anyone wanting to learn rhythm guitar to listen closely to the guy. It helps that a lot of the tracks have a very exaggerated stereo field with the rhythm guitar frequently occupying just one speaker so it can be heard in near isolation
Man I’ve been looking all over RUclips for the most accurate lesson for this baby, can’t believe I found it here in a cover. Lovely Rickenbacker btw! John must be proud(:
@@callumheritage4743 No, it was really a banjo (and a ukelele too)... You can check it out on The Wikipedia (Just type 'John Lennon).... Actually, Julia started teaching him how to play banjo. Thats why when John created The Quarrymen He could only play using four cords... Paul teached him how use all the six cords in a guitar (John Lennon biography, by Phillip Norman)...

It's so cool to see young people playing "regular" songs at all, especially Beatle stuff. Kudos to you for understanding music that came before your time. I did that, too, when I was young. I listened to music from the 1920's and 30's and still love that stuff and listen to it all the time even though I'm a babyboomer and grew up the the era of rock and roll. FYI, beatle music borrowed a lot from the 20's and 30's and their great chord progressions show it. Your playing is great and I love seeing you and others your age do this stuff. Warms my heart! One thing about tone I'd like to address with you. I've been playing Rickenbackers (btw...it's Ricken-BACK-er as in HAT, not like Ricken-bocker :-) Anyway...Rickenbacker tone. I've been playing Rickenbackers for 50 years and I see you seem to use the bridge pickup for your Beatle sound. Learn how to use the small "blend" knob. It's wonderful. You miss a ton of tone from the guitar if you only use that killer bridge pickup. You want that bridge pickup but you add so much more Rickenbacker tone if you allow the neck pickup to blend into the overall tone. You'll find the neck pickup is too loud. That's what the blend knob is for. If you put the toggle switch in the middle and (while holding the guitar in playing position) tweak that small blend knob all the way counterclockwise you'll have all pickups cranked (assuming the volume knobs are cranked). Now slowly tweak the blend knob clockwise and you lessen the amount of the neck pickup at the output jack so it doesn't drown out the bridge pickup. LEARN THAT KNOB...YOU WILL LOVE IT! :-) When I was younger and playing my 325, I found the middle pickup to be a pest. It muddied up the neck pickup sound and overall sound when I used the center toggle position...so I always used the bridge pickup alone. I also kept getting clicks and knocking sound from my pick hitting the middle pickup. So I disconnected it. BAM!! INSTANT JOHN LENNON TONE! The middle pickup was holding back the tone big time. Then years and years later I found out John had disconnected his middle pickup for the same reason. Cracked me up. You decide for yourself, but it works big time. I don't have a 325 now. Sold it like a dummy years ago. But I have a 370wb which I bought on purpose with 3 pickups so I could totally remove the middle one and put it on my Rick 4005 bass.
cool. boogie chords were all the rage, what it makes you realize is just how amazing their vocals and harmonies were, if you didn't know the song and just heard the riffs you wouldn't think much, it's what they did vocally that sets them miles apart from everyone else.
I believe if John Lennon's seen and heard you he will probably start smiling getting in on this way late but still got to say something in case you run up on the comment that's a good guitar playing yes sir
Thanks. If you check out some of the live performances, you will notice that Lennons his right hand technique exhibits a uniquely characteristic pattern of sometimes using alterrnating up/ down strokes as well as sometimes using just down strokes. I hve never seen this discussed before. Also his sound on the studio track is a bit "muffly" with the top end rolled off a bit. I also read that they experimented with his sound using compression and reverb and perhaps a touch of vibtrato or tremelo on his amp in order to get a sound more "like and organ". But there is no organ on the track.
cool man. I'm a bass player who does some guitar. I think you're bang on with Dm7/F6 and G6 during the chorus. When you listen to the original those notes are there, it's just hard to pick out between the 2 guitars and the beautiful vocals

And a rocker second only to Elvis.
One of? Perhaps THE greatest songwriter of the last century.
