I would compare it to the Leopard 48 you all did 2 months ago for comparison. Its amazing what a design engineer can do with the same space. The Privilege is a beautiful boat, but they forgot about design considerations and comfortability. And it's as though the helm was an afterthought, like they forgot about it initially and then threw it in at the back end, lol. I would add a hard top over the cockpit, probably push the helm forward under the hard top, like a leopard probably. It would require a 6 month haul out IMHO, its all doable and you all are certainly capable, just depends on if you like the basic design or not. I would talk them down to 220K with all the work needed. I didnt see a Watermaker or washer/dryer or genset, all things you would need to get. Also, all those windows will need to be replaces and resealed completely, including all hatches. And I would add more solar panels on top of a new hard top. And I have a feeling you will need new sails as well. I have seen alot of channels do a refit on worse boats, so I know it can be done and its not out of the realm of possibilities. Good Luck on your search and I know you will find what your heart is looking for!
Dicker a little and buy that boat. So much of what needs to be done you can do underway. It’s structurally bulletproof! What’s a little elbow grease!! You will NEVER regret the stability on longer trips, especially in rougher weather. It is the perfect family boat!
Thanks! We think it has the right kind of projects as well. Definitely will be some unexpected things pop up but that’s truly all boats new and old. We’ll see!
Sanding and varnishing can be quite cathartic, or calming once you get into it. It also teaches patience and the reward of a job well done. Keep your sandpaper in plastic freezer bags to keep it from curling in the humidity. I actually like this boat the best of the ones you have shown. Only thing I didn't see was a workplace for Eric, might have gotten distracted during that bit though.
Thanks, we agree…all good things for Rivers to learn as well. And yes, the port aft cabin would work great for the studio…we just kinda flaked and forgot to talk about it. Actually the whole boat should be extremely quiet as it uses cloth drop ceilings and cloth wall coverings everywhere…pretty much echo proof already.
A few items/comments. You will have leaky window/rebedding issues, but you won't have broken bulkhead issues. Will not have bridgedeck slam issues. At 48' you will not hobbyhorse in seas like a 40' cat. There are many Privs that have hardtop biminis ( foam core fiberglass sandwich with room for more solar panels) and elevated enough that you have forward visibility, I do prefer bulkhead steering position that is out of the sun, but practically speaking how often do you hand steer vs. autopilot (assume this cat had autopilot). Most Cats can sail downwind on autopilot. Would a temp mounted front mounted video cam with helm screen provide the visibility for docking you seem to be so concerned about? Headliners and sanding and revarnishing- some work but not crazy. The fabric with foam wall material will be a pain to replace. 5 cabins including the crew cabin in center nacelle is something you will not find elsewhere. That nacelle is what gives Privileges their torsional strength. An electric winch can be added for $3-4K on coachroof deck or elsewhere with halyard brought back for hoisting mainsail. Assume this is straight shaft drive so no saildrive issues.
We totally agree with all those points and hadn’t thought of the camera possibility. Most of the down points we mentioned have reasonable fixes, workarounds, upgrades or other positives to offset them. And yes, it does have autopilot as well as shaft drive. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for the great tour, i like your calm honest review and I'm 6'2" so it was great to see how i would manage the space...oh and yoga poses are great too use as a judge of space! Peace
For docking, you don’t need the helm because you have twin screws. So, if you rigged a hand held remote engine control, you could stand anywhere while docking
Some observations from a land lubber 1- From what I've seen of your videos & that's ALL of them, you seem to be mostly at anchor. (Does away with docking) 2- This cat will get you to places you want to travel to a lot faster & safer that those floating condominiums. 3- You are both extremely capable of varnishing & repairing items - a 3 month re-fit to commence the process would not be out of the question. Then sail - rinse repeat. 4- The boat, from the way you talk about it would take you on a circumnavigation (if that's in your plans) very safely speedily. 5 - I believe you said there were parents in the mix - more hands make like work for the re-fit. 6 - I feel that if you built a hard top (similar to Barefoot Travels - Davey & Erica) with side curtains, then that aft area of the boat would be awesome. Hope my 2 cents worth halps you decide in the long run what you will do with this boat. Take care & good luck !!!!
I would recommend Onboard Lifestyle, too. Teal and Linh built their own hardtop for their catamaran (around Ep 135). Also, as many others pointed out, you should offer $170k. There is a lot of work to do on this boat for that offered price.
Milwaukee Tools makes a battery-powered 18 volt run the winches on your boat , you slap it on the winch and instead of putting your winch handle on and pull the trigger
I think the Privilege is a great boat & would be ideal for you & $220-30k. There mast rigging would need to be checked out. I liked it & once the refit is completed it would be awesome 😎
If you get it.. I'd love to help with the refit.. I'd gladly help with anything.. but windows are my thing an painting an such. I also do murals... Lol !! I really like this one but sweat equity is definitely part of the equation... I love the "bonus rm for Rivers"!! You guys are just amazing... Wish I had Dosh to buy your boat... But I'll be buying a fixer upper for sure... Lol!!
Winner winner chicken dinner! Returned back to Carriacou this week and noticed the Hunter was gone so I’m assuming all went well! Tell Rivers I saw his picture hanging in the marina office. Too cool!
I'd love to see you all revisit this video and after a year of living on her, how reality compared to first impressions. Is the bed big enough, and how is it on Eric's back (require additional foam?) Does Rivers still find the tram bouncy enough? Was your first impression of a galley down being a problem or does the space make up for it?
Uhh got to remember that for a family,, over ten knots in a cat isn't usually that comfortable. But good performance means getting moving in light winds. That is the big plus,, and trimming for 10 knots average.
Hi guys watched this video three times, and for what's it's worth I think cat could work. You said the main point so many times, it's a strong safe well made boat with all mechanicals in good shape. Which for a family are the most important facts. All the cosmetics can be sorted in time. Any monies negotiated can be used to travel to a destination where others can do that work for you. Anyway good luck.
Think she could be a comfortable, unique looking home for your needs after a refit and some serious sweat equity. Is there a water maker? A hardtop would be a definite addition, but well worth the investment. Room for lots more solar without using livable deck space. Biggest con for me would be the bed situation, but not a dealbreaker. Would you be able to refit one of the aft cabins as a studio/workshop for you? The bonus playroom/cabin could be utilized for Rivers to sleep in should you ever need 2 cabins for guests. I like the size and separation of the galley and the salon. It seems more house like. This boat seems roomy as a liveaboard with different areas for “me time” plus tons of storage. Having two separate showers and two wet heads is a plus. One head can be utilized as a wet locker for snorkel/scuba gear or rainy day clothes drying. All in all, a spacious, sturdy, safe boat with lots of potential! I can picture her after refitting and she’s a keeper 😉!!
I don't know much about those older cats but I do know that the long traveler makes it possible to flatten the mainsail with very(!) interesting speed benefits if the sail isn't to old and tired.
I look forward to your videos each week - you guys are awesome. As I plot having a cat someday, Privilege is at the top of my list - Pro: They are Beasts! Con: They are Pricey….
You are buying a cat not just for today, but the next 20 years. A lot space will make it easier for multiple of groups of people to live on the cat. Also, as River becomes taller and invites bigger kids over, the extra space will be a definite plus.
Yeah, we agree, much prefer shafts. We dropped the ball on mentioning the engines. The starboard engine just got a full rebuild and new transmission, only a few hours since, port still original but runs well. Like a lot of old boats, the hour meter is long since dead, but the port will likely need the rebuild in the near future too.
Zatara is a privilege. Generally great quality boats but going to be a lot of work. Still well worth it considering the overall fit and finish. But I guess you have decided to compete with the big money channels.
Listening to the list, I think you need to be in that boat @ $ 175k. For the first year after purchase, you’ll be doing a whole lot more sanding than sailing. Nice bones though 😁
Man that’d be great, but not really a realistic number for that boat unless it had major mechanical issues. If we buy it we’ll have to figure out how to sand while we sail! Lol
The Cat is thirty years old, they degrade, not ripen to become more worth. While watching your video I too thought to myself $170000 is the max what it would be worth for me. It is like with used cameras & how they are valued, people are in it too much with their heart, and their reasoning powers get clouded. Or the insane prices on eBay for many items, except new Chinese ones. A beautiful interior design thought!
A lovely boat in its day but now needs a lot of work which obviously is not a deal breaker for yourselves. Obviously the biggest problem is not you buying it or even returning it to better than new condition it is getting your money back on all the equipment parts and labour you put into what would be a 32- 35 year old boat when you came to sell it. I would of thought the cramped beds and the smallish cockpit would perhaps put you off but if it is a viable option for you then putting in a much lower offer in keeping with its age is actually free. The owner can always say no or come back with a higher price.
Very true! Most of the windward islands in the Caribbean have lifts big enough, but surprisingly USVI is very limited. Luckily it’s a short sail to Grenada where haul pits are cheap!
You don’t really. They definitely didn’t have everything figured out yet in ‘92. A lot of older cats have that issue, plus basically all monohulls of course unless they’re a deck saloon version.
@@SailAwayVlog I MUCH prefer boat project videos. I watched Atticus and Expedition Evans WAY more when they were doing their projects. As soon as they started sailing I personally lost interest. I'm an occasional viewer with your channel, but I would likely tune in to every episode of boat projects. Just me.
I'm not sure, you can please correct me if I'm wrong but privilege family of boats seems to have a serious issue with bulkheads. Please let me know, anyone listening that has any experience with this something that I've heard from numerous Sailors and the community. Don't buy a privilege because they have bulkhead problems.. anyone with knowledge please let me know or set the record clear I would appreciate it thank you I do happen to like these boats.
Great boat, now and when refinished. Watch "Onboard Lifestyle" channel for many great tips, where Teal did a complete restoration with many upgrades. Great thing is, you get a completely upgraded and modernized sailing specific boat tailored to your own needs. The newer boats are not necessarily better built in many cases. Also, the helm can be repositioned to where Teal has his, and the full hard top can be built. Something i have never seen utilized is the modern convenience tool of mounting two, ( fore and aft facing ), infrared pan and tilt cameras at least half way up the mast. Benefits - blind spots instantly gone, and clear viability forward when watching for rocks, shoals and sand bars etc. from high above. Think about docking too in tight spots. All seen from a monitor right at the helm. No crew forward. This is the FIRST addition i would make to any boat. As for the slanted windows, exterior louvers (Leopard style) can be added, inside or outside.
thats the perfect boat for you guys....for your wife, if she works 10-12 hours on that boat, she won't need yoga....and for you, you have a well ordered mind that can keep it all orchestrated, and moving....I'd figure on a to-begin-with 3 MONTH re-fit, and then go sailing....haul it, fix it, then go......OnWard....
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately though, that would be a pointless offer based on what these boats are worth unless there’s a major mechanical or structural issue. Sure would be nice though!
They took a lot of that sale ability of them catamarans.for comfort because a lot of them just sail them out into the bay from their Marina and set their you don't see many of them travel the world
I think you guys left off a pro and a con. You will never be board ever again, and building the list of projects and figuring out where to start is a massive project of its own. That said, I love those boats -- and as a few others have said, you can get a quality hardtop made for pretty reasonable prices if you are willing to spend some time in Colombia or Panama. I also heard you guys start to talk about comparable boats for sale -- which has always been an issue, what something is listed for and what it sells for, especially in two very different markets like Europe v. Caribbean. I know I am not telling you guys anything you dont know, but before the world went sideways boats were listed high and sold 15-20% bellow list, and we are starting to see some movement back to the norm in that regard. That boat in particular is going to take a very unique buyer. Someone well enough off that can afford it, that knows what it is, and is willing to put in the work on a boat of that age. If I was in the market for a boat I would personally put in an offer on this one for a more than comfortable price just to see if I got a bite, all they can say is no right? ... and then in 3-4 months when it is still for sale offer just a little bit less to let them know you are still interested but the price is eroding which might cause some panic ...
Thanks! All very well said and we agree. Comps are hard on the old boats also because condition varies so much. All you can do is evaluate it yourself, weigh how much you’re willing to work on it, and take a swing if you think it could work for you. I truly wish we could wait on the market, but our needs for a cat are pretty immediate. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for watching!
Sad looking boat no matter the price. Do u really want to spend the next year on the number of upgrades needed and do this in a small island? In US perhaps but cost goes up. Also on a boat this size your limited on where and how it can be hauled. Finally older boats like this are becoming more and more uninsurable.
We checked insurance and it would be no problem and most islands we frequent down here can haul it…in Carriacou it’s only about $450 to haul a boat that size including a free week in the yard. So if you move around like we do it’s not an issue. As for expenses, if we buy a fixer upper, we’ll probably sail to the US for a bit so all the nickel and dime stuff doesn’t kill us, then plan for any labor intensive work we can’t do ourselves to be in Panama or Trinidad where it’s cheap. It would be almost impossible to afford it all in one spot. Thanks for watching!
most of those head liners didnt appear to be original. so there is a reason for them being changed. that boat has water intrusion and you wouldnt know the extent until you really dug deep. this is a overpriced project boat for an 18 months refit with all the logistics having a famliy implies. not saying it couldnt be brought to a great standard. it can, but it will cost you, both time and money.
Actually all those headliners are original. They’re thin wood panels covered in vinyl…over the years the adhesive has let go making them look saggy. Very easy replacement. Only serious water intrusion appears to be the skylights, which is typical on these boats. All the fiberglass around them is solid, so a properly sealed replacement is definitely in order. That’s probably the biggest project on the boat and definitely DIYable. It would definitely require some work, but we wouldn’t mind that.
Run away fast, don't turn around and look back just run quickly far from this boat. It's leaky and will remain leaky regardless of what actions you take. Who repowers only one engine on a 30 yrear old boat. One was bad , the other WILL be bad.
Actually our plan would be to convert the port one to a sort of big fixed ottoman so that’s one big lounge area. Great for passages off watch as well as evenings at anchor…basically a giant couch. Nav station is already very large.
Haha, man I wish! Wouldn’t be remotely realistic though based on what these boats are worth, at least without some major mechanical or structural issue.
That's definitely been talked about and we would love too. The problem is figuring out logistics. Most likely we would have to go rent a house on land for at least 6 months to be approved
We should’ve…just dropped the ball when shooting. Ran well with very big open engine rooms accessed from outside. Starboard totally rebuilt, port original but running well…probably would need the rebuild in the near future. If you look at the market, it’s size, and you’re familiar with Privilege, it’s priced pretty well.
We’ll see!
That lagoon 440 floating behind you would be what I’d grab👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺
Haha, those are nice! Not as roomy as the Privilege though…

For docking, you don’t need the helm because you have twin screws. So, if you rigged a hand held remote engine control, you could stand anywhere while docking
Very true…they have fly by wire throttles and with it, a remote you can take all over the boat. Pricey, but sweet.
Some observations from a land lubber
1- From what I've seen of your videos & that's ALL of them, you seem to be mostly at anchor. (Does away with docking)
2- This cat will get you to places you want to travel to a lot faster & safer that those floating condominiums.

I saw this boat on YachtWorld. They only had 20 pics or so, so I’m glad to see it up close.
Looks easy enough to dock on the starboard side. We very rarely dock on port side on our catamaran for the same reason.
Thanks, good to know! A good friend and cat guru also told me he usually docks stern first as well which would make it pretty easy on either side.
Milwaukee Tools makes a battery-powered 18 volt run the winches on your boat , you slap it on the winch and instead of putting your winch handle on and pull the trigger

Please let me know, anyone listening that has any experience with this something that I've heard from numerous Sailors and the community. Don't buy a privilege because they have bulkhead problems.. anyone with knowledge please let me know or set the record clear I would appreciate it thank you I do happen to like these boats.
Actually no, not that I’ve ever heard of. That’s primarily a Lagoon thing, though there have certainly been issues with other brands.
You're confusing Privileges with Lagoons.
If anyone could make this boat great it would be you guys!! Definitely plenty of room if you feel you can get it right.
Thanks so much! We’ll see how the cookie crumbles.
Teal is a special guy with a unique set of skills and is an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist -he designs, plans and executes flawlessly.
@@rogerirwin8878 agree. A more equal look would be Sailing Zatara as they already have a 5 berth Privilege.
@@rogerirwin8878 You bet
@@snafufubar Great comment. I agree
$250,000... it just seems so high for the money and sweat you'll have to put into it to get it back to its original glory.
I've seen brand new Wharram 46 tiki's for 125.000! Spartan but simple and tough.
I would run.
That kind of effort definitely wouldn’t be for everyone!
thats the perfect boat for you guys....for your wife, if she works 10-12 hours on that boat, she won't need yoga....and for you, you have a well ordered mind that can keep it all orchestrated, and moving....I'd figure on a to-begin-with 3 MONTH re-fit, and then go sailing....haul it, fix it, then go......OnWard....
Thanks. I like how you think! It’s definitely got the space and the bones…we’ll see!
Says lots of things about the Privilige 482 ( buy the Dean, you know you want to )
We took a shot at the Dean because the price was so crazy, but didn’t work out…something weird was going on with that one.
Offer $150k
Selamlar Türkçe altyazıya açar mısınız 🇹🇷👍👍👍
too much potential not to be VERY high n the list. Good thing with a projects is that you can make them your own.
Thanks! That’s what we’re thinking too. Much easier to make it a personal home.
You can see lorens taking strain....
First!
most of those head liners didnt appear to be original. so there is a reason for them being changed. that boat has water intrusion and you wouldnt know the extent until you really dug deep. this is a overpriced project boat for an 18 months refit with all the logistics having a famliy implies. not saying it couldnt be brought to a great standard. it can, but it will cost you, both time and money.
⛵⛵⛵👍👍👍❤🔥❤🔥❣❣💕💞💯💯
Run away fast, don't turn around and look back just run quickly far from this boat. It's leaky and will remain leaky regardless of what actions you take. Who repowers only one engine on a 30 yrear old boat. One was bad , the other WILL be bad.
Two tables??? Useless. One can be converted to a nav, working station
Actually our plan would be to convert the port one to a sort of big fixed ottoman so that’s one big lounge area. Great for passages off watch as well as evenings at anchor…basically a giant couch. Nav station is already very large.
If you find yourself talking your self in to it (Don't buy it)
Haha…I’ve talked myself I to a lot over the years…some of it worked out. Lol
Id offer 135k
Haha, man I wish! Wouldn’t be remotely realistic though based on what these boats are worth, at least without some major mechanical or structural issue.
Hello, my humble opinion is 'RUN'...This boat is not whorted.
🥃🇨🇦
Your boy needs a companion- adopt a kid. It will be worth it and your boy won't mature too fast under your tutelage. Just sayn :)
That's definitely been talked about and we would love too. The problem is figuring out logistics. Most likely we would have to go rent a house on land for at least 6 months to be approved
Very strange you didnt show the engines... its an overpriced old boat
We should’ve…just dropped the ball when shooting. Ran well with very big open engine rooms accessed from outside. Starboard totally rebuilt, port original but running well…probably would need the rebuild in the near future. If you look at the market, it’s size, and you’re familiar with Privilege, it’s priced pretty well.
its just like marrying an older woman, it just gets worse and worst as the years go forward-----RUN BABY RUN
Buy a boat already.
