  • Aquarium maintenance can be tough to do when you're so busy, it can easily be neglected or forgotten. Even if you're a good fish keeper, this can still happen to you. I'll be sharing five strategies I use to make sure my tank maintenance is done on time and that I never forget it. If you're living a busy life, you'll be glad to have these tools in your fish keeping tool belt.
    Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

    My garage is my fish/reptile room. So every Saturday morning I start my WCs using a Python on my larger tanks. While those are doing their thing, I clean my smaller tanks with a syphon and bucket and clean and feed my reptiles. The whole thing takes about 2hrs and that’s with doing 90% WCs. I’ve been on this routine for years.

    I got mine down to a day of the week, this being said things change so sometimes a day early or later happens but it’s not out of neglect. Just either fed too much that week or I don’t have a bottle of prime around. And I’m an EVERYDAY changer but I have 12 tanks and run a business helping with peoples pets and aquariums. Needless to say I like doing it 😊 ❤

    CC,
    Appreciate the video on your tank maintenance. I do my tank maintenance on Sundays. Every other Sunday I do water change in my 100 gal CA/SA tank I change about 60 to 75 percent of the water when I do the water change. The opposite Sunday when I don’t do a water change I top up the tanks and clean out the filtration. I don’t like to do to much at one time for the beneficial bacteria.

    Can’t help but notice the “doing maintenance while watching football” tip similarity with the “I killed most of my fish” episode 🤔

    • @CichlidCharmer
      @CichlidCharmer  3 месяца назад

      Exactly. That’s why I modified it to set a timer for every five minutes and must be in the same room. BUT I also mentioned you need to be extremely careful with this and the limits of your attention. The reason I killed most my fish was because I was distracted WHILE making the video of the water change. I know my limitations now and have a list while I do big water changes, and I am VERY mindful of that list if recording while doing maintenance that could result in catastrophe. I also watched football keeping an eye on the water level, but failed to notice the behavior of my fish. If you have a good attention span and can set a timer for frequent intervals successfully, I don’t see why you couldn’t do something else in the same room while doing maintenance. Dishes, clean the floors, etc.

    My schedule is pretty easy: I have two tanks, one is for saturdays (or sundays) and the other, the little one, is for sundays or mondays (it depends when i take the water for the water changes because i let it rest for 24h in a bucket), for me It won't be possible to watch a football match (the proper one ⚽🤣) and doing maintenance because i am too much involved emotionally in the match 🤣

    Fish and tank maintenance is very important so if you’re not able to get it done, you pretty much need another hobby. Not the end of the world if you miss here and there but must be done. A tank or tanks that are kept in amazing condition and great working order have more leeway than one that’s borderline of disaster. I pick days that I dedicate to tank maintenance and also follow a schedule that I write in a book that I can look up and see what I have done or needs doing just like a service book. To me my fish are family not just water pets .
