Lymphocystis: MYSTERY Aquarium Disease

  • This disease can be very difficult to catch early -- the signs can be overlooked because they aren't obvious at first. If you have aquarium fish of any kind -- not just African cichlids or American cichlids -- then you need to learn about the disease no one is talking about. It's called lymphocystis, and your fish may already have it. Watch to learn what it is, what the symptoms are, how fish contract the disease, and how to treat.
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

Good Day! Loved the channel my brother!! You know us bald guys have to stick together. Question for you: What is the name of a 3 - 4' peacock that I could put in a single fish display tank? I am not really an African cichlid guy but I love the colors and living vicariously through you.

    • @CichlidCharmer

I can’t think of many peacocks that stay that small. Most are about 6”. The ngara flame tail is about 4-5 usually but that’s all I can think of. There could be some, but I’m just not aware of any. You might consider an Apistogramma tank they are Americans though. Thanks for the encouragement and you’re right, we have to stick together!!

As for feeding maybe some frozen/thawed brine shrimp or mysis would be easier on the pallet and doesnt involve a lot of chewing. Just a thought. Appreciate the updates on this. Aw Poor Gary how is he doing, thank you for this info I have heard of this disease but never have seen what it can really do to our fish, where do you think it first came from. Not too long ago I received an online Rubescens who is doing great but now my Fire Red Uganda looks pretty rough no sores on him, but I do know the Rubescens picks on him and everyone else. Now I think I better go and get some hospital tanks and quarantine both fish, not together lol. Thank you so much for this warning and great info.

Not sure at all where it came from, but you know that stuff is probably already in the water and their immune system takes care of it. But you’re a nurse, so you know better than I do. My ruby red was an ass also 🧐. You probably don’t have any lympho in there, but it sounds like he could use a break. Monty looks 100% like he’s living the good life. I've had this popping up in my cichlid tanks for several years. I had no idea what it was until a few months ago. I was just Googling "cichlid fish tumors" and got no useful information. I euthanized some that were really bad and snipped the growths off the fins where I could. Probably just luck, but of course, it seemed to mostly affect my best looking peacocks. I tried every medication I could think of, eventually using SeaChem Polyguard. I don't know if that is having any effect yet, but we'll see. Thanks for doing this video. My frontosa had a white spot on top fin for months. I never knew what it was. When i got him he didnt take the move well and almost died. Completely upside down for 4 days, fins rotting away and huge white leasions growing on his body. I was just throwing meds in the tank and after four days he flipped back over, once he recovered he had a white dot on top fin. Eventually went away on its own.

Marineland used to make a medication called All in One, that was supposed to be useful against viruses. It seems to not be available any longer. Tetra Lifeguard is pretty cheap, though, and claims the same thing. Perhaps it would at least reduce the chances of spreading it to tank mates if used in small doses. It looks to be pretty gnarly stuff that will kill anything, so I'm going to cautiously try it out on one tank for a while and see what happens. I don't have a lot to lose on the endeavor, because believe me, it's not going to disappear on it's own.

Lymphocystus is mostly a condition that only affects the fish with it, sort of like a cold sore. This being said it’s generally not contagious but can spread to other fish. I had a fish a spot on his nose, it grew to the point where it was nearly blocking vision on that side of his face. This being said I had a different problem happening in the tank and when I changed over the substrate and decor (over 2-3 weeks not immediately) the spot shrank and nearly vanished. All that is left is a spot. Hope Gary can rebuild his appetite, stay happy and healthy my friend 😊❤

It's awful. My old Venustus had it in his mouth. He was such a super cool placid fish. I did a lot of looking up on it and I drew 2 conclusions from whjat I read: 1) It is spread through direct contact (so a slight bump into another fish at feeding time would do it). 2) I was delaying the inevitible/suffering etc (Got to the point he was struggling to eat).
Damage limitation happened (the WORST part of fish keeping). Apparently it's a virus that nearly all aquarium fish carry, but (thankfully) one that doesn't always show it's ugly head with the growths
