- Luxury vehicles come in all shapes and sizes these days, but more and more they come in the form of a sport utility vehicle. Mercedes-Benz alone has nine to choose from. And while the GLS isn’t the most expensive, it is the biggest; so let’s see what the latest GLS has to offer.

We love you John .. you are America’s automotive Dad ..
Yes sir, a great host and narrator for the road tests from the 190e to this
Long wheelbase and minimal overhang, well done. Must have a nice ride. I just don’t like SUVs in the city. I’ll stick with my all-motor V8 400hp rwd 2010 E550 “baby AMG” with adjustable air suspension. Benz really makes the best cars.
I never thought SUVs would go from 0-60 in under 3 seconds...until now. Especially ones that look like they have no right to go that fast.
5.3 0-60 with the inline 6 motor...they didn't tell us the 4.0 v8 turbo times at all..I hate it when they leave out numbers on the other motor options on vehicles..they've done it with many vehicles over the years..tell us stats on only one of the motors if theres 2 or 3 motors available they only tell us from the one there driving they could atleast give the stats of other engines..still love the show tho
This one is the 450. The 580 4.0 V8 & the GLS 63 is even faster.
@@jdubskiwright2380 the 4.0 V8 (GLS 63) goes 0-60 in about 3 seconds.
@@damilolaakanni that's insane for an suv that probably weighs around 4500lbs or more but I guess thts the magic of gear ratios and torque ..what does merc use on these for there trans isnt it like a 7 spd or an 8 spd??
@@jdubskiwright2380 it's a nine speed automatic transmission.
You have no idea how happy I am that Mercedes Benz returned to the inline 6. I've missed it over the last twenty plus years
Exactly!
The best or nothing
M power
Bmw
@@Ecuador006 I'll take an AMG Merc please and thank you but to each his own
Except the 256 inline 6 has alot of issues.
@@blairwilliams136 like what?
Glad to hear that some music has been toned down at certain parts in the reviews. 👍
It's just sad that MB is dropping its V8 offerings, except for the S class & Maybach variants..... :(
This big Merc sounds like best in class.
FYI the GLS is not based on the s class sedan but a stretched version of the GLE.
Exactly... the naming convention is just branding. No architecture carry over. Just like the "GT 4 Door"
@@linkjn1850 Even the Maybach version is using the stretched GLE platform
Depends on your definition of "based", but you're right they should have been more definitive. From a marketing and feature standpoint it is the S class of SUVs, which could have been better stated.
@@kclark8080 MW themselves stated that the GLS was based on the S-class. The GLE platform is not even close to the W222 platform.
Attempting to market the GLS as an “S” class vehicle is just plain deceptive. Nothing about it is worthy of S nomenclature. GLS is really a stretched GLE.
I like mine , but Alabama manufacturing facility has ruined Mercedes quality . Sloppy welds , interior isn’t quiet more like a Hyundai . I would also complain about doors not fitting well when closed .
Sounds like you need to take that back because I've never seen any of that on a Benz. With all the robots and quality controls, what you say does not seem likely.
I thought build quality issues were a thing of the past for Mercedes-Benz Tuscaloosa, Alabama manufacturing facility. I remember all of the horror stories about first generation M-Class vehicles rolling over and shoddy craftsmanship in 1997 when they first opened. Apparently Daimler invested a lot of money in the manufacturing facility after that for the second generation M-Class and things have improved dramatically since then.
Wow I Want This Car In My Class OK
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! THE PERFECT FAMILY CRUISER!!!
Just don't use your PPP check to pay for it.
Thank You so much
Mercedes has not announced that they're getting out of the V8 business. Not sure why that is being said here when they have a new AMG hybrid + V8 system coming. I mean if you mean by 2030 then yeah, they're getting out of the ICE business all together, or so they think.
Wait till you see the new EQS , it will blown your mind.
@@blairwilliams136 I’ve seen it. It’s grotesque.
@@MercOne you've seen it in person ?
@@blairwilliams136 No, not in person.
@@MercOne ic, well I had the opportunity to not only see it in person but to drive it as well and all I can say is : its an extremely impressive car on all fronts . I understand the design might not be everyone's cup of tea but in person I found it quite stunning . It also has the lowest coefficient of drag of any car sold today which boils down the exterior design of the car.
Either John is now a very orange man or you guys need to work on your color tuning....yikes!
Hopefully the hot word can be change from Hey Mercedes to Hey Benz.
Looks very nice, but all I could think while watching this videos is how much it's going to cost to maintain and repair all of that electrical shit that's likely going to go bad within five to seven years of ownership.
Its a luxury car but if you dont want one thats ok but dont disgrace it
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 why do people always give that bullshit excuse when it comes to these cars?? "It's a luxury car"; what the hell does that have to do with building a car with integrity and with the intent of it lasting passed 3 to 5 years?? What does that have to do with the transmission failing, or the gaskets blowing, or half of the electrical shit in the car glitching out and going haywire, and then costing thousands upon thousands of dollars to fix? There are plenty of automakers out here that build reliable, solid-built vehicles that are good at performance, and still won't leave your ass on the side of the road and eventually saddled with a huge repair bill. At this point, there is zero excuse for an automaker like Mercedes-Benz to build vehicles that don't hold up passed 70,000 miles without costly repairs needed. If I am paying $70,000+ for a car, I expect for that son-of-a-bitch to be built like a tank and last me a long time. A $20,000 Toyota Corolla putting these cars to shame at reliability is truly disgraceful, so why not call it out? If you want to go buy one, to each their own. But I'm allowed to say that this car isn't worth it to me personally.
All cars will break with all the technology but they can be fixed . Its how people take care about car also matters.
@@jlcii Right!!
@@jlcii It's a use and throw car for people who have money to burn.
I’m Mercedes through and through. But I just can’t get into anything SUV, except a G Wagon….
This thing isn’t that much slower than the Acura tlx type s that’s ashamed of how fast the crossovers are😂
I love it
But does it bounce...🤔
No. They deleted that function on all their SUVS
@@weirdshibainu I thought the bounce feature was available on the GLE-Class except for the AMG trims.
@@gedaman I may be wrong, but i believed they dropped it. When you think about it, it was unnecessary for 99 percent of drivers and I bet it took a toll on the electronics
@@weirdshibainu It's still available on the V8 versions of the GLS.

Has MOTORWEEK left MOTOR TREND on TV?
Yes, we have moved to a new cable partner: MAVTV!
@@Motorweek Your coverage here in Dallas is really bad. Your show is preempted too often for nothing.
We're sorry to hear that. Unfortunately we have no control over when individual stations program MotorWeek. But new episodes are always free to stream online at www.pbs.org/show/motor-week/ or on the PBS video app.

Mercedes wants to stop making V8 engines? They only paused because of the chip shortage.
In the future they want to get rid of it.
The next generation SL-Class is rumored to go without a V8 engine option. In the next 5 years the majority of the Mercedes-Benz portfolio will likely be all EVs. The internal combustion engine is going away soon.
@@gedaman It will have a V8 because it is the top of the line Mercedes. Those five years are way too fast, it'll be quite a bit after 2030. Mercedes has their 2.0L I4 hybrid system and their 4.0L V8 hybrid system. Everything will be powered by these engines.
Nope they announced that they are done with v8s. No more in development.
@@kclark8080 "No more in development." Yes but they'll keep using the one they have now.
It's so boring looking. If this was a Nissan people would say it was ugly
They want you to get the AMG “sport” styling pack. That one looks very wide and low and aggressive.
LCD instrument panels are cheap looking garbage and a major downgrade from real physical instrument panels.
This comment aged poorly.
I wonder if the standard MB Tex is a concession to vegans or others who wouldn't want leather. Any other lux SUVs without leather?
Leather seat upholstery are rubbish.
MB Tex is excellent. I prefer it to leather, in every way.
sound like paid commercial
What happened to the 4K video? C'mon guys, there's no reason to be in 4K when all the competition is already there..
TV doesn't broadcast in 4K yet so we do not film in it.
MotorWeek is a “TV program” hence 1080p HD will be the maximum for the foreseeable future. Independent RUclips channels are the only ones with 4K content for now.
@@gedaman Thanks for the lesson… having a 10+ year career in television, I am quite aware of this. However, there IS such a thing as down-converting as well. And considering the vast percentage of people cutting the cord with cable and going to streaming platforms for television viewing, the content could very easily be shot in 4K and then down-converted to FCC regulations.
Car for an old fart???
Mercedes SUVs never look impressive or unique to me their designs are meh and they always have average looking wheels unless you want to pay $3k in wheel options
Its a polished version of a 20 year old SUV. Its over a decade behind Mercedes sedans, even half its price.
You're referring to the previous generation car. This one is pretty much all new.
No idea what your talking about. MB vehicles minus a few exceptions have a seven year life cycle. None are more than 10.
Totally clueless.
That front grill is too much. Other than that, not bad!
have you seen anything Lexus or BMW are currently making?? lmao
