  • In this interview the band members talk about their influences, self-producing their new, upcoming album and staying away from drugs or alcohol.
Next To None is a hardcore/progressive metal band from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania featuring Max Portnoy (18) on drums, Derrick Schneider (21) on guitar, Kris Rank (18) on bass, and Thomas Cuce (19) on keyboards and lead vocals.
The band was formed in 2013 and spent several years performing live and writing music. In 2015, Next To None released their first album "A Light In The Dark" on Inside Out Music. The record was produced by Mike Portnoy and received rave reviews worldwide for their song writing, technical playing and explosive live performances, which marked them out as one of the youngest bands to break into the progressive metal scene, as well as landing Max Portnoy, Rhythm Magazines "BEST NEW DRUMMER OF 2015" award.
Next To None have spent most of 2016 writing for the next album. Their focus was on creating music that was unique, but yet true to themselves. Songs with big melodic choruses, heavy riffs and crazy time signatures.
After spending months in the studio they achieved their goal and created an amazing album that will be available for you to hear this summer 2017!

You guys kick ass. You have a life long fan in me. Im about your age. Ive been Playing music for ten years and seeing you guys do your thing is the kind of thing that gives us "little guys" the mindset too keep working towards our goals as musicans.

I saw these guys in Milano July 4th and everybody saw clearly how far this band will go, so bold and determined!
They have of course a lot to learn still (and I think they are humble enough to understand that!) but they are already "there" to me!
Plus it's great to hear what I've heard on this interview, I expected no less from them, they seem really nice guys!
I feel proud moslty 'cause at that age I use to dring a lot and as I don't like beer I use to dring very strong alcoholic cocktails and stuff and almost never getting home sober.
I changed of course and it's nice to see young and responsible guys focusing on what is real in life and not on means to get high and disconnected!
I hope to see this guys on a live show soon!

Ya good to hear you crawled out of the depths of hell B.C. ive been there myself and we always realize what were doing after its too late and everything is gone. But these kids are amazing not just for their age. If you didnt kno how old they were it wouldnt be a topic. But it sucks sometimes when i think about what could of been. I played drums in a band that was about to sign to a Label ran by former Biohazard guitar player Billy Grazziatti. I was 21 and the other members were 20 and unfortunately i put partying and getting high before our goals and it was the main reason we broke up and i just wonder to this day what could of been. Now i am in my 30s and settled down and have a son so i havent played in over 10 years. Still have the urge tho!

Haha, when Derrick is talking about the Dream Theater albums he likes, he says "every single album I really like... from Images and Words all the way to Black Clouds." I guess he doesn't consider any post Portnoy albums to be Dream Theater.

Chlori's Art Agreed. Portnoy would not have allowed The Astonishing to happen.

You get some "Bad4Good".vibes (the Terminatorfriend-singer and Vai-prodigy-guitarplayer and Zappadrummer-son-drummer--Band) except they were like 14, had better songs/talent. The difference is that Bad4Good faded fast into obscurity and this band will most likely be really big or at least be everywhere for a long time.
All thanks to the same people that think Mike is the best drummer in the world based on that he was in the biggest band and now is everywhere.
Don´t get me wrong, Mike IS a good drummer, these guys ARE talented and everything in music is based on taste and we all have different taste.
Just trying to point something out that I think is interesting,,,
Yeah, Cooperdrummer is teaching everybody how to play drums, a sign of the times...

Besides Max Portnoy this band is not good at all i think anyway Max has so much more potential to be in a good band.
