- !!DISCLAMER!! The entire animatic is a fan-made alternate universe timeline (AU) and consists of headcannons and events that I've created for the sake of creative storytelling. Please be aware of this fact!
This animatic explores and develops the scrapped story concept of Echo Zane being Mr. E and how he would come to be. Part I explores the backstory of Echo and the trauma he endured to soon become his alter ego. Echo Zane was originally built to be a stand-in replacement of the original Zane that Dr. Julian created in hopes he could relive being with his son again after being separated from him. Unfortunately, Echo's existence was instead a constant reminder that he would never see his real son again. In an attempt to bury his mistake, he locks Echo in the basement where he built him, leaving Echo to wonder for many years rotting away what he did wrong and only ever wanted to be loved by his father. One day after having a vivid dream of a figure that looked almost like him, he longs for answers and freedom and breaks free of the basement, only to discover his father was long gone and abandoned him. Echo is devastated but a mysterious figure emerges in the midst of his trauma and claims to promise Echo a better life...
This is a project that was SUPER ambitious for me and has been in the works for a really long time (still kinda is while posting this video)! I've always been fascinated by the concept of Mr. E being Echo Zane and really wanted to take that scrapped idea and make my own rendition of how it would go! This is only half of the full story, hope to get working on part 2 sometime in the future! Hope you guys enjoy :D

Plus, Echo Zane was supposed to do his biggest reveal as Mr E in one of the season if I remember. It was one of the episode that Mr E bashed up Zane, it was supposed to be Echo Zane.
This literally made me emotional. Echo was just a replacement for Zane, the original creation and son of Dr. Julien. The way that Dr. Julien just looked at Echo, reminded of his son from the beginning, painful memories. He just decided to isolate Echo, isolate him in the basement. It started to get old, time has passed, Echo was alone, forgotten. But then a little shine of hope came for him, the mini robot. As that happened, Zane and Dr. Julien reunited, but left Echo. Left him, forgotten him. As Echo finally escaped his isolated prison, he was gone…
And someone appeared. A glimpse of hope for Echo, and a glimpse of hope for Harumi; to start something sinister.
I love this…
Zane: Oh my God, my younger brother I never knew I had was locked away on an island, completely alone, isolated and abandoned by our father! If only I knew about this! If only somebody had told me!

Oh my word, this is amazing! I actually thought Mr. E was Echo and hearing that was the original idea was so heartbreaking! I love your art style and your take on what led to Echo becoming Mr. E is absolutely heart-wrenching.
You can see Echo just wants his father to happy, but could never make him happy. This is made worse by the implication that Dr. Julien never showed him any positive attention and affection so Echo is only left to wonder what he did wrong. Then he's taken by the hand. Is this it? Does he finally love me? Only to be trapped in basement. You can see the desperation and shock upon realising the doors locked and after that, he justs sits there letting himself rust. Then he sees a vision revealing he's a replacement goldfish and finally escapes only to realise he's been abandoned. Of course he take Harumi's offer. What else does he even have?
The song is so perfect, "Why haven't you found me yet?" Your frame composition, storytelling and expressions are really solid, it's amazing. You are incredibly talented! I look forward to the second part. This is just beautiful, thank you for sharing!

But the writers of Ninjago scraped this idea.

I really really realllyyyy wish they kept the concept of Mr E being Echo canon… because this entire storyline is so deep and emotional and challenges Zane’s entire character as well as his view on his “perfect and loving” father.
Not to mention addresses Echo’s neglect and abandonment and how that affected him and his relationship with his father and older brother.

And I agree that the writers could've gone for something more with Echo, but hey, that just makes the concept more fun for the fandom since now everyone can get creative on how they think it could go !

Omg i really hope that in the climax of Cystalized that Zane is fighting Mr E (or Mr F as Pythor states because of new modeling) and knocks off his helmet and showd that Mr E is in fact Echo Zane this whole time, but forcefully muted
lets hope that mr.echo will be canon in this season + finally someone uses the name mr.echo

Echo was NOT at the lighthouse. And Jay had been living there for a year at that point, so there's no flipping way he didn't check around the whole place ONCE. Echo would've heard Jay crying and yelled out to him asking if he was okay.
So ya. He's not there anymore. 🤔😆😉

Actually, Echo was at the Lighthouse! It's seen in one of the magazines comics the reason why Jay is at the Lighthouse in Crystalised and it shows him meeting Echo and deciding to stay

Holy _cannoli,_ this had me literally _crying,_ no exaggeration! You are a MASTER at capturing emotion, my goodness. I wanna hug the poor guy. Echo is such a fascinating character and I’m sad they never carried out the Mr. E thing in the show. We didn’t see him when Jay went back to the lighthouse, though… hmm. Hopefully that has some importance and isn’t just them forgetting him :0
And if the amazing, emotional art and story you’re telling here wasn’t enough, the fact you used a song from _NF?!_ YES!! The lyrics fit really well here (not to mention NF’s music is just, like, amazing in general).
I will never get enough of this. You are seriously one of my favourite Ninjago content creators out there, everything you make is so darn pretty and tugs at my heartstrings more than I expected going in!! This is a masterpiece, I can’t wait to see whatever comes next!

This animatic is simply gorgeus. I adore your drawings, how the facial expressions are so frickin' telling, like we know exaclty what each character is going through. Especially the scenes where Echo move, and when the emotions on his face change, they are so, so good and just so descriptive of his mentality in different situations. I love how you included Skybound like something that happened in a flash and then its gone, and how Dr. Julien ist just such a... duche right here, he just locks Echo up to fly off with his "better" son, and how you, with so few drawings, illustrated Harumis preparation to get to know the ninja, to learn more about them, leading her to find Echo. Imma definitely rewatch this animatic, the song matches so well, and your art is so simple, yet you show in each frame your great understanding of bodily and facial anatomy, while you ALSO makes them change so... fluent, not litterally, but like you took actual people's raw facial expressions, exaggerated them a bit, and drew rough sketches on them. You eyebrow work, and the perspective we see them in and... yeah, I'm ranting, but this is just so good that it definitely deserves it!

This is so sad... I remember when the season with Nadakan ended and the whole timeline was reset I was like "Wait what happened to Echo? Is he still locked in the basement????" And then he was just... Forgotten. It would've been so nice if Zane and Echo where able to reunite, get to know each other and form a bond. I think Zane would've loved to have a little brother especially considering how much he values family. It's honestly really sad and your animation is beautiful ohmygosh.
Sadly it was almost canonical that Echo was Mr. E.
Hence the Mister Echo title..

I cried. I never liked the fact that Echo was made as a replacement and then Dr. julien had the audacity to not mention him and he just left his machines their it was just so heartbreaking.
Another thing that breaks my heart is the fact that Jay and Nya both know Echo exist they are the only 2 who remember the events of Skybound so the fact they didn't go back for him just hurts. What makes them believe that Echo didn't have feelings to. If he was like Zane, than Nya and Jay should've known better.
I have a theory that Jay and Nya did go looking for Echo-Zane.
I mean, Jay lived for almost a year in that old lighthouse when Nya disappeared. But we never see that he's still there or there's any mention of him. In fact, the place was a mess, as if the robot cleaner didn't live there anymore either.
Maybe Jay and Nya did go for him but he was gone because someone, let's say, "silent" knew that Dr. Julien had another Zane and decided that he would be useful, so took him and kill the cleaning robot so as not to leave any witnesses.
And with no other way to locate the Echó Zane Nya and Jay had to give up on the idea of searching for him, after all, how do you explain to your teammates that you know that someone, who is no record of ever existing, disappeared without a trace other than an empty home😢
Whoo ... that could seriously be cannon to the show. It would explain a lot of things like:
why Echo doesn't appear in season two (technically he just wasn't planned / created as a character yet) or why Dr. Julian (before his death) never even mentioned Echo to Zane.
Besides, this animatic is great and I hope more people will see it. I'm waiting for part 2 ^^
How did this make me feel so sad, angry, and depressed for Echo!? I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF IT LIKE THAT, BUT REALLY, THAT'D PRETTY MUCH BE HOW IT WENT! Even if he isn't Mr. E, this'd be similar, only difference would be that HE'S STILL THERE!! And when we see the lighthouse in Crystalized, Echo's no where to be found, so my immediate thought was, the writers either kept him as Mr. E and let him die, or he's in shambles in that little closed off room in the bottom and Jay didn't bother going down there to find him. MY HEARTS BREAKING RIGHT NOW! HE'S EITHER DEAD, OR ALONE STILL, WHY!?! The poor BOY NEEDS A BREAK!
Here I thought Zane has a depressing life, losing his loved ones left and right, over and over, but Echo only knew one, his father, and when he left, Echo was literally all alone for who knows how long. Both Zane's have horribly sad lives, but at least Zane has his friends and Wu with him, who does Echo have? Tai-D is a sweet little friendly robot that I honestly wished Julien took with him, but he doesn't talk, so he could've possibly fallen apart long before Echo, or still be around, but unable to say a thing, leaving Echo in the lonely silence of the lighthouse. I'm gonna cry...
This was honestly such a beautifully told story that made me feel everything that Echo felt, and made me so much more impatient for his return in Ninjago. The images, animation, story, shots, emotions and expressions. All so well done and just fantastic!
I'm now obsessed with this animatic. lol I've been replaying it constantly since I've found it. It's way too good! I wish Tommy and LEGO would all see this and how good of an idea it is! Maybe even put it in the show. ;)

I really wish they had explored Echo/Mr. E more. He would’ve been a great character study of what Zane could’ve been under different circumstances.
He was literally built just to be a replacement of the first Zane. And when Echo couldn’t be that he was locked away and abandoned.
So I think it would make perfect sense that he would resent the original Zane. It wouldn’t justify his behaviors, but you could get where he’s coming from. He would probably sign up with whatever group would give him even a fraction of the love that he was missing out on, and being able to destroy the nindroid he was based on, The oh-so-perfect first son, would is sweeten the pot.
But, perhaps in the end he could be redeemed. Realizing that revenge isn’t what he wants, but acceptance. Maybe he could even find a brother in Zane?
I guess we’ll never know what they would’ve done with him since Garma Don taught him the pieces before his identity was even revealed. But it’s cool to think what might’ve been.
OH GOD an animatic did NOT just make me cry at 11:30 in the morning this is not okay ;-; This is incredible, I can tell a lot of effort was put into it!! Echo's story is so tragic like omg. Ahhh can't wait for part two!

This is amazing and so painful. Echo just wanted to be loved. And he thought that finally, *finally*, he was. Only to be betrayed by the man that had created him. I can understand the emotions here. That painful, desperate, agonizing desire to be loved. It hurts so much. I liked Dr. Julien until I found out that he had built a replacement for Zane without ever considering what it would be like for Echo. I personally believe that Mr. E is still Echo, especially with Mr. E’s return as Mr. F in Crystallized. Jay was at the lighthouse, but Echo wasn’t. It feels like they were trying to imply it. Anyway, this is beautiful, and I hope there’ll be more to it at some point. Thank you.

The idea that Mr. E is Echo is CRAZY and AWESOME
I love this concept. This gives a whole new dynamic to Zane & Julian & it would’ve been a really awesome storyline.
We’d see Julian, unable to let go of the memories of Zane, build a son similar to the first, but it caused him more heartache than joy. Believing he’d never see Zane again, Julian can’t cope with looking at Echo & isolates him the basement to escape the pain. Then abandons him when he is reunited with Zane. It gives a new perspective to the doctor, making you question if he was as good a man as others believed.
Echo loves his father & wants to make him happy, but can’t understand why Julian doesn’t love him back. Even when locked in the basement, Echo still longs for his father’s love, only to have all his hopes dashed when he finds himself abandoned. Harumi is probably the one who tells him about Zane & why his father left. Filled with hatred towards a father who abandoned him, becomes Mr E to seek revenge against the older brother he blames for Julian’s lack of love towards him. This would have been a great twist as liked Echo & hoped he was Mr E, but was disappointed when he never made another appearance.
I believe finding out Echo’s identity would make Zane question the perfect image he had of his father & try to reach out to his suffering brother.
Your idea of Echo being E is brilliant. It’s beautifully animated & deeply emotional. Looking forward to see the rest.❤❤❤❤

I bet when Mr. E (Echo Zane) was beating up Zane in the "Teeth" biker race track he didn't care that he was beating up his "Older Brother". He just wanted revenge for OG Zane ruining his life. It's so sad that Dr. Julien didn't even dismantle Echo Zane, but instead left him alive to feel the torture of his life knowing that he was a replacement for someone else. And then he left him to rot at die alone while he happily left with his OG "son". At least Harumi gave him a 2nd chance at life & a chance to give him the revenge he deserved........ what they both deserved. Think about it the Ninja could't save Harumi's parents & OG Zane ruined his "Younger Brother's" life, so they both get their revenge because they both are people whose life the Ninja ruined. So Harumi became the Quiet One & Echo Zane became Mr. E. I think the animatic would have been better if Echo Zane busted out of the room as soon as the OG Zane arrived. He hid behind the stairs watching "heart breaking moment" between OG Zane and Dr. Julien. It was a true heart breaking moment..... for Echo Zane realizing that his life was a, replacement for someone else. So he decided that it was better to back to the room than be there. Dr. Julien left without him, he started to rot. But then he heard familiar voices.. Jay and Nya's voices. He helped them (during Skybound) thinking he could be part of their family, but when he saw OG Zane he realized it wasn't worth it. So he went back home (Dr. Julien's prison) and started to fade away from the Ninja's memory as if he was never there, forgotten..... again. Then Harumi came into his life giving him the opportunity he always wanted.....REVENGE!!! And she was true to her word, he got his revenge.
Why did the Ninjago writers scrap the idea I will never know but I know 1 thing...... The writers should have NEVER scrapped the idea. Please reply to see if you like this!!! ↑

I felt a lump in my throat watching this and this usually doesn't happen unless animals are involved I think it's because the way you showed Dr Julian creating Echo Zane and then abandoning him and how Echo is just so innocents😢 this is amazing I'll defiantly be reading the script can't wait for part two

Poor ECHO! I really hope that's not how Julien abondoned him I kind of hope he just thought he died or somehtign but he later came back on after he left. never knowing he sruvived. But this is really good and it's an intersting way to show how it could have all happened.

The facial expression alone is gorgeous, the story itself is something I've yet to see touched on, and it could at least partially explain why Echo was down there and not with Doctor Julien when the ninja found him. Seeing Echo slowly fall apart, seeing that his father didn't care about him as much, which can happen with a "copy", but it's still unfair to Echo for this to happen to him. I'm so excited to see more when it comes!
Aaahgg!!! This is so incredible! Mr e echo zane au my beloved, literally this is probably one of my favorite things I've ever seen, the song choice is so perfect, the way the beats hit with the song and the timing of it all is so impeccable, I'm so very excited for whatever you make next for this! It just makes so much sense for mr e to be echo, both robots, both have names with e, also loved that echo remembered bits from skyblund, it always bugged me that nya and jay remember the events of it but still did nothing for echo, prob an oversight on the writers part, but still! Also echos motivation for things is chefs kiss amazing, being considered second best to the real thing, not being a real boy big pinocchio vibes going on there, hes rightfully bitter at being left behind and the replacement for the real son, I get chills every time I see that shot of the back of zanes head then going to echo so good, like he lived in zanes shadow, never able to be exaclty what his father wanted him to be, then being left behind like that, ahggh, so incredibly great wow I'm very eager to see more of this whenever the next part is complete, I'm on the edge of my seat abt this au, maybe one of my favorite ninjago aus ever because it ties up the loose ends so cleanly! Well, I love this alot and the amount of work and effort you put into this is so apparent, it's so fluid and I also really enjoy the limited colors too! Thanks for making this!!!
My heart is breaking! These are my new headcannons!!! The song you’ve chosen just yanks on my heartstrings along with your beautiful art. The animated bits are so well done and the whole thing has left me wanting more Echo Zane and wanting to cry.

YES YES YES! this is what I've been thinking! echo is the perfect antagonist, since he's been mistreated so much. guy was literally created as a bad replacement, forever inferior to zane, and when his creator got his real son back, then he abandoned echo, locked in the tower to rot.
everything aside, damn, what a fenominal animation, the emotions, the storytelling and execution.

The show is based on such people! I can't even imagine what your work will be like and on what even more violent topics. I have always wondered what happened to Echo Zane after Jay reversed everything in Skybound. All I can think about is if he was okay in the lighthouse or will someone ever go back for him, Nya, Jay, someone. Seeing this video broke my heart and I almost cried but I for one am excited for part 2
