The Best Football Game You NEVER Heard of!
Alternative Title: The Simplistic Brilliance of Nintendo Pocket Football Club
The Nintendo 3DS eShop Hidden Gem: Nintendo Pocket Football Club. Aside from FIFA and PES (Pro Evolution Soccer, now known as eFootball), there lies Football Manager as some of the most popular football games. However Nintendo Pocket Football Club provides a simple, yet surprising twist on the Football Manager-esque style of games which keeps the core concepts of a Managing Simulator, but has it's own distinct Nintendo twist brought upon it.
Due to the news of the Nintendo eShop closure for the 3DS and the WiiU, I thought now would be a good time to make a video to highlight this game as I feel as if this game flew quite far under the radar.
In this Video Essay, I'll be discussing how the game works, its history, how progression works in the game, and how the game is easy to pick-up but can be deceptively hard to actually be really successful on, y'know, apart from save-scumming it.
Hopefully, this video brings more attention to this simple, but very entertaining game!

Okay what is happening I have like 300h in this game and I didn't know there was a second person ON EARTH who is like me. I never expected for such an essay to exist, especially not 8 years after the release of the game
Yeah, I was thinking of making this video for a very long time. I, myself, only had the game when I was in 2nd year of Uni (2019) and started to record the series last year. Hopefuly this video does give the attention this game thoroughly deserves!
I've played this game for 300+ hours and didn't even know you could manage the all star team. That's part of the reason I love this game so much - always discovering new things. 10/10 video, glad to see someone else is passionate about this game. I'm praying we see a sequel to it one day in the future!
Yeah. It’s refreshing to see a good classic Football Game on a console like the 3DS and original to Nintendo rather than a port! Glad to know that people are still finding this video!
years later and im still playing it. what an amazing game 💙
Great to hear people are still enjoying NPFC! 🫡
This video was genuinely so fun to watch. I was waiting for a potential reference to the online side of the game that was taken down, it’s a shame it’s gone it was enjoyable especially playing against my brother
Thanks very much!
Sadly, I think I started to play the game when the internal 3DS servers went down before the actual eShop. So I couldn't experience it. The annoying thing is that I probably did want to include the multiplayer, but I couldn't find any good reference videos to showcase it, and not much information about it was available to give a detailed explanation of what it did. In fact, I still don't even know how exactly it worked, only from what the game says in it's "Info" section 😅
@@TheRivieraFishNPFC I’ll explain the small amounts I remember from it since I can’t find much online. So there were two main options either online or local matches, online being against others from around the world and local being somebody in the same room or whatever. If you went on the online version you’d be in a leaderboard amongst thousands of other teams which you could select to play against and climb the leaderboard. But here’s something you might find the most interesting, you couldn’t actually manage the team, the computer would do it for you. There was a command options section where you could like choose how flexible or strict you wanted the computer to be to follow your tactics and things like if they’d substitute newly bought players or old players. It was quite fun, not as fun as the original game obviously but it’s a shame you didn’t play to experience it. Last thing is that I remember always selecting the top few teams and I don’t know how… but they were in beginner league, but their whole first team had stats of FULL S’s. Like every single one was an S. and the bench was almost all S’s and a few A’s which is crazy to think about how these players were trained. Anyways sorry this was a long read I tried to keep it short 😅
@@TheRivieraFishNPFC what I also found fun in the local option was between me and my brother we had 3x 3DS meaning we had 6 save slots and had mini tournaments with all the teams in. And facing off against each others players was really fun. I think 3 of our teams were really good like competing for the quadruple and the others A or B league. And also finally, you probably already heard of this but you could share players across devices. So if I trained a player really well I could sell him onto another DS and he’d be on both games. So if I made a new save slot I’d sometimes cheat and just buy a cheap really well trained player from another team and use them to get better quickly- saying this now makes me think that’s probably how the teams I said before got all S’ in their stats. Sorry for all this talking again 😂

Yeah! I remember seeing that in the trailer for the game, it had shown a small portion of the online. That’s pretty cool, I remember you can actually set the “Flexibility” status on the actual single player part of the game.
I also remember seeing the Leaderboard of all players. Sadly, that was on the Nintendo website which showcases the game, so I never got to try my personal Spiderverse save file against the world. 😔
That sounds crazy! The only way I can believe that, is if they used the DLC to get the cards, and just tried to leave every game to make it a possible loss everytime. Either that, or they were cheating 🤣
Wow great video! That must have taken hours to make, Respect. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much!
Bridgeford Utd. is in Germany called "SV Burggrabben"
well made video about a game i love, keep it up!
Thanks, I appreciate your comment!
Briliant video, thank you! Enjoying this game rn
Simply brilliant
This Football game needs licensed players, leagues and clubs.
This game is the very definition of moreish. Hidden subtleties aplenty. Love this overview.
Thank you very much!
Did not know you could skip the match.
Yeah. To be fair, it doesn't benefit the user that much regardless if it results in a win or not.
Best game in 3ds with pokemon Y
Not gonna lie. I was more intrigued and interested with Yo-Kai Watch during the 3DS era of Pokemon games.
and every time i make new account in this game i delete the account, because my players are getting worse and worse in like the 8th year
Yeah, the decline in some players can be quite annoying. But it's normally at that point where you start doing re-builds of the teams. Honestly one of the most fun parts of the game for me!
@@TheRivieraFishNPFC So I can just sell some players and buy new ones?
@@Nixxo989 Yes, if a player loses more than a half of his potential, I try to replace him by a new player by selling him mostly at the end of the season.
@@BrickHario thank you!
I picked this game up again after finding my 3ds again and I found out that i used the same players for 11 years (in game) so i now have a team with players that are only there 3 years. And I am stuck in pro league 2 for like 6 years. Is that normal?
Yeah. At that point in Pro League 2, you would need to start to build a team that can be developed. The best way to do that is to buy some players who have already "decent" stats that are quite cheap and have low starting potential. Then after 1 or 2 seasons, they start becoming monsters. Sacco is a really good example of this. I think Schuster is also really good at Pro League 2.
Even then, the game still feels like Football, luck is still an essential part of the game, so I wouldn't worry too much about being in one league for a couple of seasons!
