    Tea Tree oil has been used in eyecare for many years. Tea tree oil benefits include working as an antimicrobial and anti inflammatory. Tea tree oil uses for the eyes include helping with blepharitis, eyelid styes, cleaning eyelash extensions, meibomian gland dysfunction, dry eyes and demodex mites.
    A 2020 publication concluded that the active ingredient in tea tree oil was toxic to meibomian gland cells in vitro. Since then, some eye doctors have been concerned about tea tree oil causing dry eyes to get worse, however, as we discuss in this video, that specific study may have some flaws.

I use the Australian Body care 100% concentrate mixed 1 drop in 10 ml jojoba oil or 3 drops in my squalene cleanser. I forgot to say that I also use it to freshen up my eye area and it feels relaxing and refreshing.

    I found a lost kitten that didn't know where it was and crying and crying. I picked it up and it's eyes were sealed completely shut with goopy eyes crusted with I guess the matter that eyes produce but was never cleaned. He was hungry too. I took a very wet wash cloth rinsed in warm water and wiped as much as I could off. I put an extreme tiny amount of Tea Tree oil using a q-tip and put it on a warm wet washcloth and then wipe his eyes. I did use hardly any because I have used it on myself before and IT DOES BURN. Then I fed him canned cat food. I kept him for a while before I gave him to someone that takes animals in that takes care of them. Anyway, for 24 hours his eyes teared and I kept wiping with warm washcloth and kept him fed. After 24 hours, his eyes were no longer crusted and mated and didn't have that goopy greenish yellow stuff coming from his eyes. The natural antibiotic in it worked in cleaning his what looked like an infection.

      @@aminaben5828 I also had rosacea and constantly got styes. I used tea tree oil in a liquid soap daily for about a year, until the bottle ran out, and since that time, 2015, I’ve had one stye and the rosacea hasn’t returned. I never left straight tea tree oil on my skin and I only used the soap-tea tree combo to wash like how you would use any soap. I washed with it and got on with my day. I drink only decaf, no alcohol or other known rosacea triggers, no eye makeup.

I’ve been suffering with dry eyes for about 2 years now (and tried sooo many drops and wipes!) and my ophthalmologist does not offer some of the more advanced treatments you’ve discussed in your videos. I’m going to order the heated eye mask you can wear with your eyes open that you featured in one of your previous videos. Question…can the doctor see the eye mites during the exam? I’m hoping I don’t also have those but my eyes aren’t particularly itchy. Some of the eye drops you’ve recommended have helped more than the ones suggested by my doctor. Thanks for all your hard work! Wish I lived closer to your clinic!!❤

I feel as though Im being fear-mongered to not use skincare with this preservative but I have ironically been finding that products with Phenoxyethanol are much less irritating than tjose without it: causing really bad contact dermatitis. Im starting to suspect that the study on rabbits is a bit misguiding and causing more harm than good to what we understand about eyelid & eye health.

Various medical professionals over the years just look at it, tell me to stay away from anything with steroids in them and come back in 4 to 6 months. One even gave me needles in my eye to see if it would stop the leaking vessel. I noticed no worsening or improvement. Any additional advice or recommendations that the doctors have not mentioned or done to help my vision?

We need smth stable (that could remain on the mucous eyelid skin), right? It could be a gel, ointment, more viscous..

    Dr. How about oralFlagyl? I know that in Europe they give 10 days of Flagyl to clear up Rosacea outbreaks because it kills single celled organisms such as Demodex, among others. Also Metrocream is topical Flagyl . I have had rosacea and dry eyes many years. Most prescribers won’t prescribe this but one time years ago a doctor prescribed this for a rosacea flair up and it worked well for the skin and eyes. I’m having what I believe to be a flair-up of blephitis and wish I could just get someone to prescribe some po flagyl. It seems to me that if the Demodex Brevis, which I understand lives in the meibomian glands, would be pretty difficult to treat byscrubbing the eyelid with ocular tea tree preparations since these glands appear to be so much closer to the eye than lash follicles, for those with mgd,blephitis, or the propensity to develop chalazions.
    Do you have any thoughts about this?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth

      It's very wise of you to think about the location of the gland to the eye. There is more recent research looking at melatonin being a driving factor for getting demodex out of the glands - so some treatments may have melatonin added to it in the future.
      I know of Flagyl by its generic name but it is an antibiotic and has been shown to be effective for rosacea.

    One of my eyes suddenly started watering heavily and it seemed like there was something in it. I tried irrigating the eye , but it just felt as though my lashes were catching on something when I blinked. My ophthalmologist recommended tea tree wash for mites on my lashes. He said most people have mites, but I seem to have more than my share. I have a bottle of 100% tea tree oil and I put a bit on my finger and diluted with water and rubbed on my lashes trying not to get any in my eye. How does one apply the oil? I’ve also ordered treated wipes. What does the tea tree oil do to eliminate the mites? I didn’t ask the right questions of my ophthalmologist

      Thanks for asking, Sally! My glasses power would be around a -5.00-1.00 x 090...or close to that for both eyes. Which is pretty strong. I have been mostly wearing contact lenses since I was 13 and still prefer them.
      I am working on some videos about myopia management but the most cost efficient option is to have updated glasses powers and to change lifestyle habits. This means spending more time getting outside throughout the day and limiting excessive time spent on near tasks (which is hard). Otherwise, I think Atropine eye drops may be another cheaper option. Where contact lenses such as the Misight lens or Orthokeratology may cost more.

    There is an eyelid wipe product called I-Lid 'N Lash Plus. It includes 5% tea tree oil, and their instructions state that any remaining I-Lid 'N Lash Plus need not be washed off after wiping the eyelids. Obviously the product won't stay wet - but does the fact that it remains on the eyelids, even though dry, mean that the oil is being absorbed as per the study you discuss? In view of the study, would it be prudent to wash it off after a few minutes? Thanks for your opinion, and for all the informative videos!

To kill Demodex mites, would it make sense to create a diluted TTO solution using coconut oil, for example, and apply this to the eyelid and leave it for several hours or overnight, effectively soaking the eyelid in diluted TTO? Would not be a way to expose the mites to T40 over a sufficient period of time rather than a brief wipe?

    Dr. Allen, shouldn’t the same rationale be used for TTO’s use for killing Demodex? The time it takes an effective concentration of TTO to kill Demodex is between 40 and 90 minutes of continuous contact. As you point out in this video patients will only have continuous contact with TTO for a couple on minutes at most which is not going to kill any Demodex. So in real world use TTO will not kill Demodex in eyelash follicles or in Meibomian glands. If the belief is that it will kill Demodex over time with daily use then that same rationale would apply to TTO being cytotoxic. Wouldn’t Hypochlorous acid be a better choice as it is also an antimicrobial that will penetrate biofilm along with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic benefits. Hypochlorous acid is also a substance naturally produced by neutrophils making it very well tolerated compared to TTO products.

    • @rachnamurthy2817
      @rachnamurthy2817 Год назад +1

      Great comment. Hypochlorous is safer and non toxic. The drive to eradicate demodex is not necessarily the solution to treating rosacea or blepharitis as it is likely to be the bacterial colony that they carry that is the route cause. We may be inadvertently causing harm to meibomian glands and systemic issues like antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption with a toxin that attempts to destroy something that doesn't need to be destroyed

  • @papagayoco
    @papagayoco Год назад +7

    As a co-author of the study at Harvard Medical School, I believe you forgot to mention our conclusion - "Our study discovered that T4O (terpinen-4-ol) was
    toxic to HMGECs (human meibomian gland epithelial cells), but it was limited to cellular exposure
    in vitro. More clinical studies are necessary to determine the
    benefits and harms of daily use of T4O on the eyelid margins,
    as well as the indications and contraindications of T4O
    application. In addition, as previously suggested, the
    medical community should be aware of the possibility of
    endocrine disruption and should caution patients about
    repeated exposure to TTO (tea tree oil) or T4O." I believe you also forgot to mention the anti-androgen and estrogen activity of TTO, which may promote meibomian gland dysfunction, and how this compound may contribute to antibiotic resistance - all at very low concentrations. Given that TTO/T4O is now being sold in multiple cosmetics for use around the eyes, and that eye makeup is used every day of the year, year after year, we do believe that clinicians "should caution patients about
    repeated exposure to TTO or T4O." We await a randomized clinical trial to assess the impact of such chronic exposure - no such trial has yet been performed.
