- What you COULD expect from a 10 year old Porsche 911 991 (Carrera, Carrera S & 4s models) It is not to say that all 10 year old Porsche 991' are in this condition, but you should use this as a lesson for what to look out for, and what not to accept.
I believe this car has now been sold because it is no longer listed on the usual listing places.

A tip I've come across recently to help find vibrational rattles is to put a signal gen app on your iPhone and play it through the speakers. You can vary the frequency around the 40-90hz area to make all the loose items resonate and it simulates being on the road. Makes locating the rattles easier. Good luck.

Works a treat, exactly what you should do to find a rattle.
My 2012 991.1 Carrera S has 93,500km (58,100 miles) and it has ZERO issues, other than a pitted windshield from driving the car a lot.
Drive more = less problems?
Same deal here... 77K on mine and services like a Toyota. Not a single problem except for pitted windshild Lol!!!
This is surprising to hear. I have a '15 C4s with 45k miles on the clock and the reliability has been bullet proof. No rattles, no squeaks, no unexpected repairs. Routine maintenance as recommended at a Porsche garage and it has been amazingly reliable.
I'm w/ Phil 996. My 996 Gen 1 Cabriolet w/ 57K miles on the clock has no vibrations or rattles or any driving problems. solid as a Rock !! It has been retro fitted w/ LN IMS. I'm good for another 100k.
The 997.2 was the last generation "All Porsche" build before VW came in to the picture and the 991 was forecast to be assembled w/ cheaper parts and not 100% Porsche. This is why the 997.2 is the gen to own, the last of the true 911.
I've a 2005 997.1 C2S with 89k, very minor creaks given age and mileage 👍. Enjoy the content and honesty 👍👌- we all love the brand but can't be blinded that they are not without fault. Just love em 😎😁
If you’re concerned about vibrations coming from a sports car then get something luxurious. Especially a 10 year old car with 50k miles.
Hi Satch, vibrations/buzzing noise from the front with the stereo on is a common defect. It is however a very simple fix, no need to remove the door card. Where the door hinge attaches to the door, you will see a plastic cover, that simply clips off. This cover vibrates/buzzes against the metal door when the stereo is on (both sides). I removed the cover, then used some gaffer tape around the door hole, creating a type of gasket, then refit the cover... simples. I hope that helps! Your air-con issue is likely a condenser failure, a poor design Porsche managed to carry over from the 997! However, I'll can forgive my 991 pretty much anything, as soon as I mash the loud pedal... epic! Keep up the videos!

I just sold my c2s 991.1 on a 63 plate with 49300 miles to evans halshaw we buy your car for £55k paid 52500 2 years ago. Was a great car never a thing wrong in 2 years. Prices are going thru the roof at the moment. My 991.1 4 GTS is coming next week can’t wait.
I have a 991.1 4s 15 plate 20000 miles now , have owned for just over 1 year and it has cost me nothing in repairs and no problems great car and never want to sell it
Same - I have a 991.1 GTS with 24k on a 15 plate which I’ve now owned for a year…the thing feels like it’s been hewn’d from stone. Beautiful engineering. Had a 2008 997.1 C2S with 37k on it beforehand and that was solid too. I don’t drive them like Miss Daisy but I do take a lot of care with them, as did their previous owners. I think that also helps.
I’ve a 2015 C2S Cabrio and it too is solid. No issues so far. No rattles and is a dream to drive.
Wow. I have a 2012 997.2, experiencing absolutely none of these rattling issues. It surprises me, didn’t expect this at all.
Can you please explain to me what I’m finding people and versions of the models overlapping on the 911 cars?? I really would like and answer.. 2012 997.2 AND 2012 991.1 like mine!! I’ve NEVER seen this before

My 997 rear speakers were really rattily when I had the music on. I took the grilles off and they are only held in with one screw each. This is by design and the other end is held in with plastic clips that are not very secure. I added 2 additional little screws to the frames and this completely got rid off all the rear rattle.
My 1999 996 with 70K miles doesn’t have any rattles or vibrations………and the A/C is ice cold.
Also the interior is in great condition and the original fried egg headlights are still working.
But it does look a little dated🤪
Flip side, I had a 1999 996 with (when I bought it) 75,000km, and spent a LOT of money fixing it. Just all the pipes and stuff were fucked.
Was a money sink.
Current 2010 987 Cayman S though is flawless, had no problems with it.
I bought a mint 1998 996 in manual with 120,000km’s on it recently (in Australia) - and it’s amazing. No rattles (although the suspension is all new which helps) and everything works - electric sunroof, electric seats, the AC is ice-cold (better than my new Discovery) - it feels like a 1990’s time capsule! Get a well cared for example and the 996 will go forever.
Coming from long term 996.1 ownership to a 981 Cayman, I concur with Phil996 and this video!
His use of “vibrations” is what we would call “rattles”…..not a good thing.
991.1 c4s 2013 with 62k and no rattles but in last year have had to change two COVs and rads, deffo keeping a warranty on it but it's so worth it

Having owned a 987.2S for 8 years and almost zero repair bills. Just basics, brakes, tyres and service.
£12k of repair bills in two years, puts me off ever changing cars…
Although I do have a 911 turbo itch that needs scratching.
Love it but I must add; after 20 years Ford focus ZX3 with 215000 miles still running strong with no rattles and full compression.
I own the same model with 21,500 miles. It's be well=maintained by me. Your car has been driven hard and put away wet, that's why it's rattling so badly.
My roll bar has popped up.in my meecedes sl 350 I went over a hole in road......how can I get it back down
That list of items replaced for a 9 year old car was pretty shocking!
9 years is pretty well used?
known problems since this car came out. For example: clutch line - leaks brake fluid and has to be replaced $1000 (at dealer), A/C lines leak - repaired under warranty, rear lid/front frunk support struts - replaced 2x and hardly used! The list can go on. Porsche refuses to honor past the 4 year warranty on these items, they just fix the part and change the part number (struts for example) and charge incredible $$$.

My '13 991.1 C2 has none of these issues. 37K miles.
Ditto...2013 c2s......one vibration that simply wet away.....and I do several track days a year!#Keeper @54K
My 2013 991.1 with 44,000 miles has zero issues. Few simple rattles that were incredibly easy to handle with felt tape. Personally, I’d rather have the age issues and the last of the NA cars versus giant screens and smaller displacement turbo engines - mostly for the longevity of the car.

I’m just back from a drive in my 991.2T and I have all the rattles too..add the cup holder flap to the list😉 This is my 5th 911 and to be honest I expected better..still love it though!
I also have a 991.2T and I put a lot of time and effort in to addressing the rattles. I was able to get them all and now the car feels very solid. Google the following for a tutorial on how to remove all the noises: "My Quest for a Rattle/Buzz/Creak/Squeak-Free 991.2 Interior"

I have the same car as well. I’ve come to love the little rattles and imperfections.
I have 87 944 turbo and 928 gts w low miles since 1995 and there is not even one rattle or noise.

Excellent detailed presentation. I'll use it as a tool to argue against any OPC that acuses me of being picky! I have been using the Meguiar's Ultimate Compound for years and would recommend it as well: it is effective and safe (difficult to over do it and damage the paint) but the best results can only be obtained by machine. I am mechanically minded (in case it explains anything) and over 100,000 miles plus from new I have had far less issues and far less spent
I’ve owned 11 Porsches over a 30 plus year period. Until now (991 S cab) reliability was not an issue. This car has been awful. Trading in for a Lexus LC 500! Porsche won’t release info on how to repair these cars, forcing you to take it to the dealer. Not happening. It’s been a great journey but I’m done!

@@stanmlekodaj2562 that’s tough but my 2007 Turbo was a beast. 6 SPD manual with a tune and FVD Brambacher exhaust. My fav might be be the 2006 Carrera S 6 spd manual with coil-overs and Tubi Style Exhaust. Tracked that 1 at Road Atlanta. Great car but I did trade it for my R8 Spyder 6 spd gated manual!!!!
@@jmarkr100 Appreciate the input. I'm starting to look for maybe my first 911, or maybe another reliable non-exotic sports car, but mostly for street use only, nothing crazy but manual only. I don't want a collectors piece or something to just look at and I don't want to deal with the frinnicks of the italian or british cars which seem like they constantly need expensive repairs.
Wow! That's a worrying amount of issues considering it's only done 50k. I can only imagine its a previously abused, or on the opposite end of the scale, money no object owner had it. Always thought the 997 was a better built motor 😉
Mine started having a bunch of these issues at 20k miles and 5 years old: vibrations/rattles, wing mirror snapped itself, AC blew cold and never hot (opposite problem), a bunch of the VW valves broke and kept breaking resulting in all sorts, the full coils and harness went. I still loved it and nothing annoyed me more than the radio starting when you turn the car on 😂

Perhaps some of these things are regional/weather issues... my 2013 991 has zero issues, not rattles or creaks. I have several friends same situation. I am in Australia and its mainly used as a weekender.
Just drove a buddies 991.1 GTS cabriolet and absolutely ZERO rattling or other issues and 50k miles-even with the top up. Surprising to learn of all these issues with this car.
That side trim sticker is fire. What happen that the headlights and high pressure pump needed replacement? Did it break down on the road?
I have a 2012.5 and have no rattles or vibrations.
This missed the 928. the 911 is the poor man's 928. the 928 won "Car" of the year - no other sports car has ever won "Car" of the year. the 928 has two production car land speed records(1986 and 2020). the 928 is the biggest bang for the buck in exotic cars as well as the entire Porsche line up.

One point regarding some of the vibrations, the door cards, rear panels and 'C' post covers and maybe even the door mirror; there could be a possibility of a poor quality re assemble after a bare re spray?
If your dent guy tells you that the rear interior panel HAS to come off, change your dentguy - all of DentWizards Techs' are properly trained. (and their co owns, amongst lots more, Meguires, great products)

Regarding the rattling - have you tried going into sound settings and selecting the surround sound option at the bottom? Really distributes the sounds better

Honestly def do consider one. I'd def reccomend a test drive atleast. For me its the best car for uk roads.
My 981, has been pretty much fault free during my 3.5 yrs of ownership. So reliabily wise its been pretty much perfect. Drive wise, its an occasion everytime i get in it to drive. And the feeling never wears off.
Def consider one. Prices, as you prob know have been going up of used cars but i still think their worth their money.
Spec wise, unless your thinking of resale ease/values etc then a few extras such as sports exhaust, sports chrono, maybe bose is desirable otherwise a base is def good enough for uk roads.
I sold it a few months ago mate. Considering a 981 cayman though.
I think I saw in another video that your car is lowered on springs right? Do you think this played any role in increasing the vibrations?
Good deal on the re-gas. I had mine done 4 or 5 years ago by an independent Porsche mechanic and was charged $300.
The compound really works. Not cheap but 100% worth it.
Satch. Another informative vid. You need a course in used car selling 😂. That’s a lot of brutal honesty, it has a lot of annoying rattles, body imperfections and £12k of work. A/C was pooched, cosmetic issue with the wheels … but other than that, perfect. Targa looks good tho. Keep up the great work. I’ve been searching for a 987.2 or 991 with the right combination of fit out, mileage and price. Prices have really spiked during COVID period, so this has been a challenge. The search continues 🙏
I had to wait until the car was sold until I published the video, it wasn’t fair on the dealer that I gave it to. But I’d already made the intro etc 👌 cheers.
He did say he was going to fix all that annoying squeeking and rattling and charge up the air con before selling it on. Hopefully he is a man of his word.

Issues must be specific to this actual car. I have a 911.1 C2S with 45k miles. A little rattle from the front but that's it.
Satch, good video and very useful to show the work and prices paid as some people will be surprised at this.I paused it to have a closer look and i am not 100% sure the bill invoices are in order and I saw 2 entries for 2 sets of headlights. I am guessing these were the last owners as it looks like Porsche Reading and Guildford. Do you know why the headlights which I guess are PDLS as they have washer jets were replaced as you might expect a 50,000 mile car to have originals still fitted, if they were discoloured there are refurbishers that polish this out I believe for way way less than £1,800 plus labour to fit and code them to the car?

No such issues with the left hand drive cars.
It sounds as though you have one of the very earliest 991 cars off the production line (which were known to have more teething issues) or your car was manufactured on a Friday afternoon. Never had any of those issues on my 60k mile, mid 2012 991 S. My car has been pretty solid, only suffering from the typical issues most 911s suffer from (disintegrated rear exhaust bolts etc) although my Carrera S cup wheels are starting to corrode slightly. 🙁
Hey thanks for the video, it would be helpful if you if you put the mileage spread in the video. It helps form a better conclusion for purchase to know if you put 10 k or 50 k miles on it, as far as what is contributing to these miles. I never heard of bore score issues on 991 Mk1 engines,so I'm asking for anyone to substantiate or point out some remarks about it.
Turbo engines are immune as far as I know
both on 997 and on 991 Mk2 however I'm
focused on the natural aspirated variants.
It really is surprising how at Porsche they seemingly could live for years with such a flaw on 997 Mk1,being the issue still there on Mk2 series albeit at lower extent.Hopefully 991 Mk1 doesn't suffer from such a pretty embarrassing weakness in engineering,but I'd like to get some infos though. Thanks in advance.

My advice, stay away from the C8 for a few years. A lot of them are being returned for all sorts of issues. Beautiful cars just not fully sorted yet. I’ve an 05 that has been bullet proof over the years. The new ones have too much going on.

I have 911 turbo and after 20 years I think one of the speakers maybe doesn’t sound as good as it’s first day. But everything else is like the first day. I am going to return it. How dare for Porshe to do that me.
That's a big bill for a car that's advertised as bulletproof legend...
Actually, this seems to be a very solid car. $12,000 over 10 years, and most of that seems to have been cosmetically elective, not mechanically necessary maintenance.
yea looking through that list, didnt really see anything from the really expensive components like the engine or pdk.. although i was a bit confused why there was 7k worth of work done on one of those invoices, dont think the paperwork shown told the entire story.
A 9 year old car. You'd think it would have better build quality for such an expensive car (when first bought). I know of 20 year old American cars that have no vibrations. :) Costing 1/7 the original asking price of a Cartera S.....even if this owner "abused" the Carrera S.....the fit/finish should be as expected.....though this is ONE copy....possibly this one car slipped past Porsche's QC not checked as closely as it should have been....
On the other hand....this video does hint that just because someone spends $150,000 it doesn't mean they are getting that much more car.....most of what we buy into is the marketing.....so what if a car can do 0 to 50 in 3.4 seconds....most 911's are driven like Corolla's on city streets in city/hwy traffic....in rush hours....by drivers with medicre "everyday driving skills" (few are competiive racing champions).....
Would have been great if you could have grabbed a 2023 Carrera S to compare...or a 2010, 2021.....

I have 8 year old 4S one 35k miles - v few rattles - main niggle is washer jets - terrible & heated ones no longer available. Also had 2 cooling faults and a misfire all fixed under warranty fortunately . One weird one was brake pedal bushes binding in v hot weather due to expansion - also fixed under warranty.

Those rattles you pointed at are from the speakers. You blew your speakers. That's not a Porsche fault. Also, how can you have to replace a muffler PSE? Makes no sense. Seems like you didn't do a quality pre purchase inspection, probably got a deal, but are playing a bit extra to fix things now. The good news is that new speakers will sound way better and eliminate the rattles.
AC should not lose gas, it must have a leak...no?

I have a 997.2 C4S Cab and havew no issues of any sort. Bought it with 35K miles, its at 41K miles now. Agree the interior is a bit dated but frankly the 991.1 you have has the newer electrical steering that is pretty bad. Also, the 991 PCM is dated as well. So for a really different modern car you need the 992, which does have the improved electrical steering.
How many previous owners has it had? Could it have just had a hard life?

That´s a good ownership review, it helped me a lot. By the way, how is the PDK after these years? I´m after a 991 but a bit afraid of automatic transmisions...
Why would you be afraid of an automatic transmission? PDK has proven to be virtually bulletproof, even with relentless launches from the Turbo models.
I know your post is old, but anyways, PDK is not an automatic transmission.
And this is one of the reasonsI sold mine. The quality control is really lacking at Porsche.

I have a 991.1 (2014, nearly 8 yrs old), I have NONE of the issues mentionned here. Also took it on Silverstone, flat out all day, amazingly stable, absolutely no issue or even tiny vibration anywhere. Feels like it just rolled off the production line. I am not sure what the history of the car in the video is, but I would not touch that.

Agree - cant see point of video. Each car is going to have its own set of issues, this just feels like you are venting your frustration at buying the car in the first place.

Ten year old car. It's allowed to have some issues. First world problems always seems heavier than they should be...until we read about people starving or being suppressed in other countries. Just drive the thing FFS. Ferry Porsche would expect nothing less. To hell with these silly little issues.
I'll be buying a 991 in a few months so just doing as much research as possible really. I'm torn between the 991.1 (NA) and 991.2 (Turbo) - I feel not only is the .1 better for driving because of the awesome sound, but it might hold value more as the last NA 911? My question is around engine reliability, if I own this car for a long period of time - will the NA or turbo engine be more reliable, suffer less breakdowns, be easier/cheaper to maintain/fix etc? Thanks in advance
common sense that NA is more reliable than a turbo charged car due to the turbos
you guys in the uk get cars at extremely cheap prices. Im trying to fucking buy one of these, and for a good condition, decent spec, fair mileage, you not finding anything below 85000 fucking euro.

I all ways wanted a 944 but couldn't wait to get rid of it bucket of crap and only had 2 owners same family and 72k on clock in black horrible to drive lol don't do it lol
"german engineering", "built like a tank". ive had 2 911's and same thing, vibrate, leak, break down, super expensive to maintain. Just like every other car ! except toyota. such a cult following though. great to drive . classic. but be prepared to spend.
What is "super expensive"? If you get the Porsche extended warranty, it will probably be ca 60-70 Pounds a month. I am paying ca 50+ Pounds for a Boxster with Euro wide AA breakdown coverage, so estimate the 911 price from there, as it will be slightly more expensive. That is not "super expensive" for a 100K Pounds car. If you don't want the breakdown cover, it is obviously cheaper, but Porsche has a deal with the AA where they send out help who are specifically equipped to get Porsches going again and I think it is even cheaper than signing up with the AA independently.
I once had a PDLS+ headlight replaced on warranty after hitting a deep flooding on a highway, that would have been 1300+ Pounds otherwise - basically what I pay for 2 years of warranty. The other warranty fix was some string that is part of the internal roof folding mechanism was dangling outside the side window, though seemingly the roof was still working. Nothing else broke in 6 years, no rattling, no rust, no wear and tear on the interior. A few very minor stone chips to the paint which I could fix myself, but not worried as most panels are non-rusting materials.
Buy a new one mate……
