What an enjoyable time watching these two and hearing Todd’s back stories. Thanks, Jonesy and Todd!
I saw Todd last week in Boston. It was my fifth time I've seen him and he's lost nothing. He still has lots of energy at 70+ . One of the greats for sure.
When an Interview isn't about the interviewer and you talk like friends ....things go so much better....you don't feel like your Dosed.....Great inter-session....
I love Steve & Todd so much. I could listen to both of them talk all day long and to their music all night long. Not enough hours in the day to enjoy them both. Absolute treasures.
Never seen Todd so at ease during an interview before ,well done Jonesy
Two Street Kids, ain't seen Jones whith a tache though !!!!:, 😎👍
Great Musician. Underrated by the masses. I grew up with his music. Lucky me!
Todd is a genius on the mixing/producing board. He was for years the go to guy for people in the know about such things. He never even hit on producing Hall & Oates. Way back in high school in 1972-73 us girls knew he was brilliant & so cool when we found out he played all his instruments on some of his albums. Great performer too! LOVE TODD😘😍😗
When young he swore he’d be the highest paid record producer ever, but achieved that so quickly that he kept moving on to other challenges. His life story is pretty amazing.
I bought my first two of his many albums when I was 17 in 1976, saw him in concert in ‘77. Amazingly talented. God reached down and gave him a thunderbolts of musical and technological abilities. A self-taught musician like this is rare.
“Even when incompetence is the yard stick, some people are still more competent than others.”
Welp, thanks to Todd Rundgren I know what I want on my headstone.
Todd has always been.timeless he makes sense, makes and produces great music
And I am so happy I grew up with these bands in the 70's & 80's so great!!!

A Wizard, a True Star is Genius
Absolutely! That Record is a Masterpiece.
I think Todd from ‘74 is even better and more wholesome, some better songs. I love both though.
Somebody tell that asshole Jann Wenner.
A Wizard, a True Star (no "and a").
something/anything was the album he meant
Always a pleasure to hear Todd talk about music and the industry, he's a smart guy who has been through it all with class.
I met Todd around 1971-72 along with The Hello People and Billy Joel at a showcase at some Hotel in NYC. I got in because I was friends with Billy's guitarist and drummer. Al Hertzberg and Rhys Clark. Anyway, I spoke to Todd. What a nice guy. Not the typical asshole rock star. Such a fond memory.
Glenn Martin I’m not sure you’ve got the right time frame. Hello People were part of the Back to the Bars tour, which I believe was late 70’s.
@@zarchy55 He's got the right time; Todd did dates with the Hello People looong before the BTTB tour...
Meeting Billy and Todd! That is a dream in my sleep.
I've heard of & read many stories of people meeting Todd. Everyone says he's nice to fans. Really remarkable.
@@td3428 Met him once. He shook my hand and said "nice hat, man!"
he gave me a autograph with a smile and nice comment.....genuine great talent and nice person
Excellent interview with my favorite musician.
Fantastic interview. So glad they went longer than Todd's first time on the show,. Bravo!
Super smart creative guy. I'll check out the book. Thx.
I fell madly in love with TR when I was 12. That live continues going into 60!!!!
Me too!

Todd on producing Sparks: "They were just really weird...Sometimes I do things because nobody else will do it. But it has to be done." A lot of now-classic music saw the light of day only because Todd had the foresight to put it out.
XTC sky larking.
Love Todd unique insightful guy and love Jonses juke box,!
I like Todd's opinion of the RRHOF. I like hearing Todd talk. Well spoken. Common sense kind of guy.
Todd is a musical genius.
What a historian Todd is! I could listen to him talk all day.
Great Interview with Todd. I like also the Albums with The Nazz from 1967-1969. What a great Output over the decades Todd has.
He produced most of Badfinger's Straight Up album ( George Harrison produced a couple of songs). One of my favorite all time records - song writing and production.
I just have to say that you are a good dude Jonesy. You show alot of respect.
He produced my favorite Badfinger album.
The ladies loved Todd. He did a nice job producing XTC & The Psychedelic Furs.
I am so moved by Todd. He is a true master of emotion. “Hello Its Me” still runs through my head. Big fan. I want to see him at the Concord Pavilion. I saw him in 1985 with The Tubes.
The snare sound alone on "Summer's Cauldron" is quite the achievement. Don't believe me? Listen closely.
Oh, let me tell ya, it ain't confined to the ladies... my missis says I'm definitely gay for Todd. Great ass, and an even greater mind. ;)
not to mention the first album of the faux rock group:The New York Dolls!!
@@DrMackSplackem Yeah! It's sounds a little Beatley, kinda psychedelic. Love the snare fills towards the end. Love the piano in that as well.
Todd is in my Hall Of Fame.
Richard Albert Henderson He belongs!!
@@sundancer6694 yeah, in a different Hall of Fame, one that respects the talent and influence of the artist and the fans, not the established committee that decides it for us.
Todd is such a talent
Todd is a great man
Todd is a ground breaking guitarist as well and before Vai, Satriani and all the rest.
Fwiw, Vai and Satriani are both huge fans of Todd.
Im so glad Todd!!!! I was given a utopia 8 track when I was 15. That music was a curse to my obsession with qiadraphon8c sound. I got to talk to kevin on messenger last year. Hes a fantastic drummer on that album.
Back To The Bars was an album I really liked back in the early 80's!
Todd's explanation of micro dosing hallucagens is so spot on.
Then every now and again ,have a blow out & clear out the cobwebs of the mind. At least that's how I feel
You Joker ... good... how YOU feel... but, Todds' music is very special. It is a feel that no one else has, or, can do. And he needs a propper on tour sound tech that does not over modulate his thing.. if you know what I mean...
... and micro dosing is BULLSHIT. That dose nothing for consciousness, except increase ones tolerance for mediocrity...
And the music played forever and it captured every ear
I enjoy these nice lengthy types of interviews from Jonesy ! 🤘
Always been a fan of Todd he produced so many unique bands Sparks Tubes and on and on!As well as was unique artist himself!
Vote Todd into the 2021 R&R Hall of Fame! Go to "rock hall fan vote" and vote with several emails!
one of my triad of music production gods: Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, and Trevor Horn. Without them, my music collection would not exist.
Excellent curation of talents- can't fault those selections.
Terrific interview!! A pleasure !!
Todd great guest as always
Couldn't agree more about Sparks. Saw 'em around first album time at The Rainbow with GT Moore and the Reggae Guitars supporting and they were indeed a rocking band. Great show
He’s always down on the Dolls I don’t know why they where great I listen to them almost everyday. Rip JT.
He's not a very rock n roll sort of guy.
The Dolls never cared much for him either and despite is lame production the album was great... they revolutionized rock music and are so underrated its criminal
What's so lame about the production on the Dolls' debut aside from - aside from the complaints of mainstream critics?
@@mick5137 Its not really lame because it's one of the coolest albums ever just read the Dolls weren't to happy with him or the production and a few critics back in the day
@@greglamb4079 , Thats not true, he produced and respected many rock artists. He likes musicians, talent and real vocalists, the Dolls and most of those bands had NONE!
Badfinger - Straight Up 1972. Produced by Todd Rundgren. The only exception is the song Day After Day which was produced by George Harrison. Todd came in to take over when George left to organize the Concert for Bangladesh.
But George gave him no credits on the album...bad George, BAD
It’s always a pleasure to listening to Todd i always have to laugh for his nose picking great humor
Rhea Donker : 🇺🇸 I Noticed The Nose Picking Every time I See him.! I have never seen Todd play or sing.!
But Followed Him From “1973” I was 4 when I learned the Radio doesn’t Sing People Do when Todd sang on a Talk show
“1973” Hello it’s me.! 😊👍🏼
This chic I know was almost crying listening to “two out of three” and she must not have noticed how it’s the most hilarious song that’s ever been done.
Steve is still one of the most handsome men in rock. And Todd Rundgren is an underrated genius. Lovely interview on every level :)
you know Steve would love the read this.
Patti Smith is from Woodbury Gardens Deptford NJ the next neighbor hood from me in Woodbury by the Armory... I love saying that!! She is way older than me and was gone from there before I even knew anything but still!! And Todd from Upper Darby philly.. how cool is that
Glad to see Rundgren in a good mood.
I still consider RUNT to be one of the best records ever made. His tribute trilogy to Laura Nyro is one of my favorite things.
When he was on Darryl Hall's show he seemed like the biggest jerk on earth. Must have had a bad day.
Whether you like him or not he is force be it as a composer, performer, producer and innovator. RIP the music biz.
I've loved Todd forever
I saw the light and hello it's me are just two of my favorites
Id love to meet him
Todd is like ... THE Rocket Scientist of Rock Music. I still can't figure out how Anyone recorded the INITIATION album; especially back at the time it was done. And the folks on that album were, (among a few others, I believe), Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Dan Hartman - so basically, The Edgar Winter Group. You would never know it.
Legends meet !
Nazz ...beautiful.
‘ Diserations , what’s that ? Your a fucking gem jonesy . Your good at this , interviewing people I mean. Todd seems so relaxed and at ease with you. Cool. Hey all the best.
Loved the stuff Todd did with the Tubes.
GREAT GREAT EPISODE!
Love Todd, I do.
Great interview and Todd is very intelligent ... He certainly laid it out on the BS rock&roll hall.
Awesome
Todd also produced APPLE RECORDS band "BADFINGER"
Really enjoyed this! :0)
Bat Out Of Hell....pure genius!
Especially that motorbike to lead guitar trick.
Jim Steinmann anyone?
@@youjoker9647 IIRC both have referred to each other as a genius at some point though I think Steinman was far more in awe of Rundgren
I wished he asked Rundgren for a New York Dolls story
Did you know mate? you played the previous portion of the vid twice? epic! I played in a band and the crowd wanted an encore. We came out and did an encore with the song we opened up the show with because we didn't have any more material left to play and no one even noticed ;)
i saw the light
Great interview, I didn't know Todd was so interesting and that he had produced XTC. SKINNY!
Really? Producing XTC skylarking was one of Todd's best efforts among the other 40 or 50 albums he produced. I have to say whoever this guy is interviewing him was absolutely horrible. I've been a Todd Rundgren fan since 1976 and this guy obviously knows nothing about him or his music and it was embarrassing the way he has talked about drug use, like Todd was some kind of drugged out idiot. I'm surprised Todd was such a good sport because he has been known to walk out on other interviewers in the past.
Mitchell Smith that’s Steve Jones, guitarist for the Sex Pistols. A legend in his own right. That is kind of his interview style. He interviews people like he is just some guy off the street. It’s a nice change from most interviewers.
@@skinnywebb thanks for letting me know that. I know who Steve Jones is. I'm hardcore punk rock ever since 1978. I had no idea. My God he's aged. And I'm glad he cleaned himself up and lost some weight too. But Steve Jones apparently doesn't know anything about Todd Rundgren and should have prepped himself a little better. Shame on him
I do believe Todd received $12 mil payment in lieu of future royalties on Bat Out Of Hell. He used that to build his Hawaii house and studio.
Todd is one of the best musicians ever, the RRHOF is indeed a joke!!
Excellent comparison of a sports hof vs. rock hof. Todd says 'wait til I'm dead to enter because I'm not retired.' He mentions players are retired before they go in hof.
KRAFTWERK!!!
Todd Rundgren says at 24:47 "It gets taken over by other entities who don't actually care about the quality of it but how much money can be made from it, then it all breaks down into something that is bottom up." This describes exactly what is going on now in the music industry. I would argue that grunge was the last music movement to shake things up about 30 years ago (EDM didn't exactly have a defiant, rebellious, fuck the mainstream stance) So having said that, there has been no backlash against the corporate machine in 3 decades, and this really worries me.
It was in Britain, it was 'Acid house' free party, ecstasy/acid culture. 88/89 into the 90's.
What corporate machine? There isn’t any corporate music industry anymore buddy. It’s Wild West.
90's was New Wave then it went a bit a different way so many great genres of music
Thank God
Jimmy Ienner did "Some Kind of Wonderful." Zappa did "Good Singing, Good Playing several years later.
He did a great job with The Pursuit of Happiness album Love Junk
Hello its me !
Probably the most intelligent entertainer or performer ever
25:48. He and Donald Fagen (a.k.a. Lester the Nightfly) are all about the 7 second delay.
at the foot of Mount Belzoni.
@@Engelbird sweet music. Ha! Sing about it. Tell the world about it. The music's sweet.
The Rock and roll Hall of Fame there's never been a bigger joke Janet Jackson is the furthest thing from rock and roll that you can get
Hypnogogia is the state from awake into sleep, but the transition from sleep to waking is hypnopompia
Bat out of hell is a masterpiece album and super guitar playing by Todd aswell.
If you like that kind of thing. I appreciate it from a composition and production POV ilbut at the same time it's an album I truly hate. Having to listen to that constantly in the 80s was painful, although I did go & see Meatloaf as I had free tickets. The audience was just what I imagined...
TODD!!!
Forever Now, Psychedelic Furs
TODD IS GODD.
1:14:49 - I believe the Depeche Mode song Todd is talking about is 'Blasphemous Rumours', however that one had been released already in '84, as opposed to XTC's 'Dear God' being released in '86!?
another good show steve
Todd produced "No Way Out" by The Tubes... nuff said.
New Ronnie Lane (Small Faces,
Faces, Slim Chance) box set out this month.
Wow! I'll have to get it. I love Ronnie Lane!
Todd “Phil Silvers” Rungren
Outta Thyme567 ... no no no... fill silvers was a clown...
a few more years it'll be Tod Franklin
shout out to BB and declan
I love u steve
Something/Anything - the greatest double album ever made :D)
Agreed. It's astoundingly brilliant.
it is a great album but The White Album, Sign 'O' the Times?
@@PrinceZappa I love both of those - Blonde On Blonde and Physical Graffiti also - but my comment still stands ;D)
Imo there are a few excess-to-requirements type songs on The White Album...
@@geofftayloruk I agree on the White Album, but Prince and Todd also have filler on their double albums as well!
@@PrinceZappa Hmm...most double albums have some kind of filler on them I'd say...some have a lot....but I'm struggling to think of any tracks I feel the need to skip on Something/Anything....
Tod Lung-phlegm is impressive . I would love to know how much publishing he has outside of stuff he personally performed or released . He has had some hits as a performer and makes $ touring but I reckon his writing and production skills helping others have hits probably made him more money especially that sweet sweet mailbox money .
He is lucky that he gets to experience all aspects of the music industry including getting into the 1% of wealth and isn’t so terribly famous that life gets so weird that your a prisoner to your fame. Or your fame is constantly humping your ego to where it’s hard to tell them apart and they start reproducing filling your head with their progeny . He seems pretty down to earth without the pretense that artists get when they mistake their ability at their craft for omnipotence of all things that involve intellect .
He speaks to the difficulty of bands which explains his strategy of being in the music biz and perhaps partially why he isn’t a freak after a lifetime of exposure to the industry .
Being a musician is smarter then being a rock star for longevity. Rock star comes with a contract in blood it is hard to be a rock star and musician simultaneously without some price .
You need therapy
Tell your shrink
@@brooke8567 You do. Neener Neener Neener! But seriously what did you disagree with . Dont like Todd ?Im too impressed by him ?
And I’m sure they both listened to mmr 93.3 ! Well maybe
Great
Todd Rundgren is the American Bowie.
Jonesy isn't actually a spellbinding interviewer, thank god for Todd.
@Dave Wray And a hair transplant wouldn't hurt Mark Farner's look...
When people from the UK say insulting things [with conviction, or in jest] it's just so cutting and funny.
58:55 to get back on track after the repeated part at like 43 minutes in.
44:45 I don't know why Todd always insists that "Bang the drum" was never released as a single. It was the second single from TEPTAE. It has "Chant" as the flip side. It was released in April of 1983. Does he mean the song took off before Bearsville released it as a single?
I have heard him say that too. Forgot "chant" was the flipside (great song). But it seems like Todd woulda known that.
my first time seeing a Todd interview. He's very knowledgeable and slightly narcissistic, but who cares; he's one of my FaVE artists, since 1968! This is a slow-moving interview though.
