These ships probably aren't up to code, considering how fast they had to build them and how little time they had. A lot of the safety measures that should be in place, aren't due to time restrictions. The literal apocalypse was breathing down their neck, so they probably just settled for 'whatever gets this thing working as fast as possible'.
