Yeah I actually miss circuit city. They had the car audio demo walls where you could select various head unit and speaker combos and listen to them. But it's still good to have actual stores around when you need them
My parents bought an 84 Monte Carlo brand new in November of 83 when I was in kindergarten. We had put 180K miles on it by the time I was in 6th grade, put an old 350 in it, and that is what I ended up driving throughout much of high school. It still sits at my parents' place, awaiting restoration.
You don't live in the Midwest, the DOT salt brine brigade has decimated any vehicle over 25 years old. It USED to be common to see 30+ year old iron on the road. Not anymore.
Man, when I first saw the Pontiac Fiero back in 1984 as a 11 year old kid I drooled for a day! I thought it was the coolest car ever. It was a red one with the sweet original Fiero wheels. Exactly as shown here. It was exiting for me back then. And seriously, GM selling a fully loaded Chevrolet Cavalier as a Cadillac. LOL!
"Limited Edition Grand National" If only anyone knew at the time what a powerhouse that car would be in the coming years. 80's GM styling was hit and miss here and there but the Cutlass, Regal, and Monte Carlo G-Bodies were some handsome cars.
moishere True, there were some hits and misses. I know first hand that the Skyhawk T Type was a blast to drive with the manual. The Citation was horrible, brakes would lock up.
I loved those cars when new and when I was a teen, test drove a newer but used trade in 84 Monte SS, damn it was beautiful especially after driving a Cordoba for years but iirc it was $13000 dollars. That was alotta coin back then.
I drive a 83 chevy Chevette as my every day car, No frills slow. But ole reliable and very versatile as far as being able to fit everything from groceries and furniture to a full size refrigerator. She's almost 40 years old and still gets up in the morning and goes any place I need to go. I love my Chevette. They really aren't bad cars not even close to what those "top 10 worst cars" list's say about them.
I remember when I was 6-8 years of age my aunt had a 1989 grey Caprice classic brougham I remember sitting inthe back seat looking at those plush grey suede seats it was two tone grey and black
GM had 4 or 5 dealers in every town - Olds was frequently paired with either Chevy or Cadillac; GMC with Buick or Pontiac (and if GMC was freestanding it was often in a more industrial era rather than 'auto row').
It was great. The more brands, styles, and options to choose from for consumer, the better. The demise of Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Plymouth brands is bad news for America and American people.
>Tool0GT92: They also had a line of heavy duty diesels along with class 7-8 semi trucks, they made busses and RV's, Cadillac made limos straight from the factory. GM has hit rock bottom in 2018 trying to become a company focused on girly ass crossovers and SUV's. The innovative automotive leader that was once GM is no more.
Great to see so many classic GM rear drive cars(G and B bodies) when they were in their prime! Now a days, most of these cars get a bad rap of being ghetto/gansta cars. I'll never forget driving(in the mid 00's) my Chevrolet Caprice into a city in Georgia and being warned by a complete stranger....."better be careful driving that car into some neighborhoods, they'll think you're acting hard!" LOL Back when these cars were still being made, they were just respectable, honest, reliable family cars, sometimes used by Government Agencies/ Cabbies. I still love them despite their modern day reputation! Long live the GM B & G bodies!
I bought a really nice '88 Pontiac Safari wagon, complete with faux wood siding about 10 years ago. Was a great car, and I could put a sheet of plywood in the bed. Got a lot of looks!
My neighbor still has his 84 Caprice Classic. 100% stock. Kept it serviced very well for many years. Suspension is very plush. But it’s comfortable to ride in.
Thank you, Motorweek! These Full-Model-Lineup videos are pure gold and so enjoyable to watch. Keep these coming! Also, please oh please release your retro review of the 1990 GM U-Body minivans - the "dustbusters" (Chevy Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Sport, Oldsmobile Silhouette).
Thank you so much for post this! It was great to see more GM vehicles. I look forward to more GM retro footage and more from Oldsmobile as well. Thank you again!
Hilarious that GM wouldn't offer one of those 4 cylinder turbo engines in the Fiero. Even better would have been the later Quad 4 engine. Then the Fiero would have been a serious sports car!
It also would have outperformed their pony cars and even the corvette most likely. So they hamstrung the fiero and wasted a potentially great little platform. But lots of folks are still modding them with various newer gm engines making lots of power
Brings back a lot of "mostly" good memories. So many models..sheesh! I wanted a couple of these but was too young. For sure it was a time of GM "if you want it we sell it"! Great video..thanks MW!
At least these cars all looked different unlike the wind tunnel clones on the road today. have to pull up close to see the badge to know what they are. The had personality.
Yea isn’t it crazy how these cars and trucks and s10 blazers, Cadillac’s, etc are still on the road today! while none of the dodges and very few fords are left!
John was rockin’ that red shirt, 80’s to the core. John if you read this ... you’re awesome! I’ve been watching your show since I was like 8 (I’m 42 now) love these flash backs!
@6:33 I am envious of anyone that had the foresight in buying a T-Type or GN between 84-87. If they bought it knowing it was going to be a performer I’d be impressed. For me, my dad helped me buy a ‘84 Monte Carlo in dark blue in ‘87 as my first car while I was working at a gas station.
A blast from the past, man!! I was a total JV baseball guy back then-floppy Reebok hightops slippin' off my tubesocked stockin' feet!! All-American boy. Still am. :)
Those Pontiac fieros were fun cars, except the ones with the I4. The valve cover would leak oil, and drip onto the exhaust, setting the car on fire...oops.. gm bodged together a recall kit when I worked at the dealership, revised valve cover and gasket, and new heat shielding for the exhaust. Didn't help much, though.
Im pretty sure anyone 32 or older has had a cutlass ciera at one time or another. I did, 88 wagon- got it from grandpa in 03 with 40k miles. Great car, sold it to buy my first truck. Im 36
The turbo-diesel Oldsmobile briefly mentioned in the video apparently _was_ just a rumor, as I can't find any record of such a thing actually existing. Oldsmobile did develop a "tuned induction" 4.3L V6 diesel and demonstrated it to the press in 1983, which they claimed provided almost as much extra power as a turbocharger, but that too never entered production.
Golly, I miss those 5.7L Diesel engines! GM had all the bugs & kinks worked out with the GM Goodwrench 350DX Diesel engine. I wish I had a shed full of them!
I bought a cutlass new in 85. I liked it. when I put 80k miles on it, those were high miles in that day, but that’s when she went “south” for me. It started to nickel and dime me to death and sold it. If I would of known then what I do now, I would of and could of left it in the barn for a few decades.

Drove my grandmother's 84 v-6 Caprice in college in the 90s. I always had to coast down the hills to give the hamster a break so he wouldn't have a coronary
In my college days, a friend had a Fiero that ended up unable to make left turns, so to get anywhere, he had to "spiral down" to his destination, like a moebius shell.

I now remember what an 84 Cutlass looks like without 22” wheels.
🤣🤣🤣
Lmao!
True comment.
Not stupid. 😀
They look stupid now, with the huge wheels.
"More electronics than Radio Shack" How ironic that statement is today lol.

Restore that beast man! It deserves a 2nd chance @ life
such an underestimated beast! those monte ss were so badass
its incedible how many GM's from the 60s 70s and 80s are still out there driving.

My 83 Chevette is a daily commuting machine for me. Despite what some people say they are really solid built cars.
@@russelljohnson1303 two years ago I was looking to get a diesel Chevette, hard to find.

The Monte Carlo got dated quickly, but now it's aging rather well
The camaro looked good too
The Celebrity was also a nice car

i'm in the U.K but I find Motorweek fascinating, love the retro stuff. Spent a bit of time in L.A in 1996 and I remember this show fondly.
A friend of my sister still has his! It’s a black 84 hurst 442! Garage kept 100% stock!
The Hurst and 442 were different models.
Yeah. The Hurst/Olds was silver in 1984.
Black over silver is 83
Silver over black is 84
I agree the hurst olds is derived from the cutlass calias and the 442 cutlass is from the cutlass Supreme
My neighbor still has his 84 Caprice Classic. 100% stock. Kept it serviced very well for many years. Suspension is very plush. But it’s comfortable to ride in.

Chris Baumgarten at least new cars pollute half as much as these box on wheels did. U wanna talk about clones? Lol and GM in the same sentence

GM really screwed Pontiac by sticking the Iron Dookey in the Fiero.
That car would have been properly quick with a Turbo v6. Sadly the Toyota Mr2, even at this time put it to shame.
