- The will to power is one of the most fundamental concepts in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. It is also one of his most complex concepts as it was never systematically defined in his works, leaving its interpretation open to debate.
The central point revolves around gaining power over oneself, not others. It is the expression of self-overcoming, becoming who you truly are.
This video intends to shed light on this concept, tracing all the way back from his psychological insights of the "desire for power'" to the conception of "will to power", as well as its relationship with the "will to existence", "will to live" and "will to truth".
We will be focusing on what Nietzsche actually wrote and published himself during his active years, as well as making some references to his posthumously published notes (The Will to Power) where it is appropriate.

This is one of clearest and also fairest accounts of Nietzsche’s Will to Power. This concept is often demonized and misunderstood as some form of psychological or social Darwinism that exalts the strong and powerful over the weak. But as you explained the term “power” is actually very general and ambiguous and has a view to psychological power to overcome one’s own self. To Become one’s true self. Comparable even to self-realization or Jung’s individuation or Maslow’s self-actualization. It’s a very ingenious and comprehensive concept actually that shows the genius of Nietzsche. The Will to Power is the drive to continue to grow and better oneself which in turn will create growth in society.

Nietzsche makes some very good points. The dilemma these days is power is regarded as being one others, not empowerment of self. Everything in a disempowering world is bastardised. Hence why I call what he is talking about the Will to Empowerment. Maybe we should call it Will to Being. What do I create/decide to empower the most people in the most sustainable way possible. Simple.

The dream was interpreted as this that for 7 years you Will have prosperity and dwindle in resources but for the other you Will Only have nothing but famine

The truth can be scary.
The truth is the Will to Power is real. If you're observant and objective (and yes, I understand 100% objectivity is rare if not impossible), I don't know how you can possibly think otherwise.
The evidence is everywhere... it explains everything from behavior in the workplace to global wars.
I am glad I got into Nietzsche is my early 20s (I'm almost 40 now). Prior to reading his works, I had been a Christian but had lost faith in Christianity after reading about some of the atrocities and contradictions in the Bible.
I followed Enlightenment morality for a while (still believe in it to an extent) and we can thank it for a lot. But we need a new morality for this modern world.
The modern world makes no sense in a lot of ways. People follow Christianity and other Abrahamic faiths, yet we live in an age of materialism and consumerism. It seems to be an age of Nihilism. What are we trying to accomplish? What are our true goals and ambitions?
Christianity tells you not to enjoy life's pleasure and to prepare for the next world. It is good in that it promotes the growth of character to an extent, but characteristics like discipline and integrity are only part of a strong person's personality. It does not promote making the most of one's talents or abilities. Doing so is essential to truly living life to the fullest. Instead, it preaches modesty and humbling oneself before God. If God does not exist, why should you humble yourself before Him? Make yourself the God of your world.
Belief in reason and science makes people inclined to suppress their urges in certain instances and to behave in a socially-acceptable manner (treat women with respect, don't be a brute, use your brain instead of your muscles to solve problems), but what is the goal of life for a person who believes in no gods, no afterlife and nothing transcendent?
Then there are the materialistic masses who are content with watching television and listening to music and playing on their phones all day. Sure, they have desires. They want money. They want nice cars and fancy things. But they are very shallow, and because such a way of living is very unnatural (what animals care about accumulating material possessions?), they are destined to remain unfulfilled even if they acquire vast wealth and a great collection of material items.
We need power and an understanding of power. Power is good. Power is natural. Power gives you purpose and makes you feel fulfilled. But the word scares people. They think of things like forcing others into slavery, sexual abuse, physical might etc. But true power is simply self-realization. It is developing and maximizing one's capabilities to the fullest. It's the capacity to make yourself the master of your world and destiny, which requires creating and adhering to strong morals. Certain Christian and Enlightenment morals are a good starting place, but a true Superman can bend morality in accordance with his needs and desires. In particular instances, it may be necessary to use force whereas in others kindness may be preferable.
Hopefully philosophy is not dead and a relic of the past. I believe the next great breakthrough in philosophy will be based on a synthesis of Nietzsche's theory of the Will to Power and his outlook on life in general with a proper understanding of Evolution and a revised theory of Evolution. Evolution is a thing, but it doesn't quite work the way Darwin thought. It's not driven entirely by random mutations and natural selection. There is something either intrinsic to the process or something transcendent guiding and driving it. I do not believe this force to be God or something else divine. It is more like the Will to Power itself (maybe a manifestation or form of it), but it seems to be more of an organizing sort of force.
Perhaps life is the duality of the Will to Power (the desire to grow, expand, dominate, flourish etc) and the Striving for Mastery (the impulse to impose structure, to adapt to one's surroundings successfully and to set required restrictions and limits - perhaps manifesting itself in human reason) and the Superman is the one who can achieve the ideal balance between both forces, creating a world for himself in which he grows, flourishes and lives life to the fullest while operating within a moral framework that adheres to the principles of the utmost discipline and self-mastery of his drives, desires and impulses.
Hearing about Nietzche his work more in depth, it make sense why I always felt drawn to his philosophy

Its interesting to note in regards to schaupenhauer (srry for spelling) for the will to live it was necessary to exist in essence by avoiding suffering, and the contrast to the will to power where suffering is completely necessary and even calculated but yet nietzche died in a state of complete madness. Im not sure how the former passed or if he even lived by his own ideals, but my point is i can see where the pursuit of righteous suffering can have some profound consequences on the mind

WILL to power is a never ending pursuit of "will to power". In this journey of taking power it's inevitable for us to face sadness, sorrow, depression and even nihilism. If we overcome all that and again embrace the WILL to power it's a never ending cycle of embracing sorrow along with it. I'm a Buddhist from Sri Lanka. According to my religion will to power will always put yourself in the middle of this never ending cycle of happiness-sorrow-happiness-greed-sorrow-resentment etc etc. If you are totally OK with this method of living you can embrace martial stoicism and continue to gain power by learning lessons in the way and minimizing sadness and sorrows along with that. BUT if you really want to shut everything down and enter into the ultimate bliss you have to do a whole lot more than that. You need to shut down all your sensory faculties and meditate, essentially focus your mind on one single little tiny minute minuscule thing, then shut down your mind also pertaining to this physical world. After that you continue to live but your mind doesn't wonder beyond that one single tiny point. Therefore after you die there will be no rebirth because your mind/soul cease to exist.
Buddhism is contradictory to the will to power. Buddhists believe in minimizing suffering and sadness while the will to power is about maximizing power to live the most rich life possible. If you're going to disagree in your philosophy at least be succinct about it
Just as ascetics/buddhists are suspicious of all instinctual feelings and thoughts, it is weird to me that they still see pain and suffering as something that should be avoided. This is based on an instinctual feeling and no real reason

Uh, maybe? It's a major deal in regards to basically reading Nietzsche as a character, but I personally recommend Beyond Good and Evil, or as said in the video Will to Power. But if you have what I must call drive, then Beyond Good and Evil is one of the best.

You have to have a basic understanding of Schopenhauer’s ‘will’ to get the contextual framework for Nietzsche ‘will to power’. I see this as Nietzsche’s epistemological starting point in which his philosophy is a continuation of.
Taken in isolation to modern ears Nietzsche sounds a lot different to what he intended.

Keep in mind that if and when you achieve power you also win the booby prize of being forced by necessity to fight off with all means necessary all those below you who think they deserve the power more than you and who are willing to kill you to get it. It can be argued that power comes with a lifetime commitment to evil.

Majority of the people don't want to claim power over themselves since power over themselves means to be aware of one's mistakes, wrongdoings and to correct themselves, our ego doesn't usually allow that. Also when you make your internal fortitude strong (like knowledge, personality, mindset) which ofcourse others can't access or even do anything about it, there's no competition for power inside you.

Power is given. If one gains power, it is because they have been given the right set of circumstances either inwardly or outwardly, and seeing that the self by itself is ephemeral and destined to die, power which can be taken away is merely an illusion of power. Therefore, only one true power exists... that which has the power to create existence itself. That which has the power to create power itself, and thus to bestow it. All other powers are subservient and conditional to the first power. Do not seek power. Seek true wisdom... even at risk of your own humiliation, defeat, and even unto death. Although I know of no one including myself who has the ability to do it willingly. It is abhorrent to us and we hate it. Seek first to be sought, not to know but to be known. Ask and ye shall receive. Just remember... you asked for the Truth. You can't handle it. But you failed to present Nietzsche's own phililogical exegesis of the 'will to power' as a text. The 'will to power' owes its name to the political order. Only through the pathos of distance afforded to indivudals by castes and classes was the sense of a pathos of distance possible within the exhalted subject.
If you haven't read Sarah Kofman's Nietzsche and Metaphor, it is absolutely fundamental in understanding the 'will to power'.
Could you link another video that explains Nietzsche’s ‘will to power’ better? I’d like to dive deeper, obviously I should read his work but I don’t think I’m clever to understand it through text.

I don't really buy will to power being more fundamental than self-preservation and reproduction. It may very well be just a function of those two, evolved to ensure their realization. Animals that strive to control territory and increase their might survive longer and reproduce better than those that don't. But they rarely if ever "discharge their power" to the detriment of these two goals, there very clearly is a mechanism preventing that. Which means to me that "the struggle for existance" does indeed take priority over "the struggle for power".
An objection may be, that if we were placed inside a giant bio-factory that kept us always alive and made us birth as much children as possible, we wouldn't be automatically happy, since other desires, including desire for power, wouldn't go away. But these instincts have evolved to be always on, because in the wild there rarely was a situation when a need for, say, shelter could be left unsatisfied without it threating the organism's survival. Even if this hypothetical biofactory made these situations commoplace, the redundant drives wouldn't switch off - but that doesn't make them more fundamental than the drive to reproduce.

I'm not sure I get your interpretation. Do you mean that will to power is a fundamental force that makes matter exert its influence on other matter? The matter sort of "wants" to act a certain way? And because life is a result of matter interaction, all the drives it exhibits can be described in terms of that will? Because if that's what you meant, I disagree with you (somewhat on the existance of that will itself, but mostly on the point that this makes reproduction and self-preservation merely means to an end for organisms *themselves*). But I need to ensure I'm not putting words in you mouth first.
