    You actually can remap the buttons or change the overall sensitivity of the d-pad without using a PC. There is a button on the face of the controller for this purpose. This is discussed in the physical manual that comes in the box but not in the online information as far as I could see.

Using stick I find dashing one direction is more awkward than the other, for example. This kind of d-pad is suposed to be used with that rocking motion, like you would do with a stick. Some old Sega Genesis pads actually had a threaded hole in the middle so you could screw a small arcade stick into it. I'd say stick to the dpad (no pun intended xd) on 2d games and use the analog octa stick for the 3d ones.

I do like the micro-switches buttons, but not so much of the other things on this controller as you mentioned in the video. D-pad is a bit too small for my liking. Make the d-pad a bit bigger, and whatever micro-switches in the buttons, put that in the d-pad. Put the micro-switches in the shoulder buttons as well. I don't use the joystick as much, but those who do would appreciates Hall-Effect sensors as that's the new wave on the market. I don't mind paying extra in exchange for a better overall controller that is durable and a joy to play with. Gamers are tired of going through controllers that feels cheap and don't last.

    One reason that some people switch to stick over pad is because of how often and easy it is to accidentally jump/jump forward/jump backward when attempting a quarter circle/half circle. Jumping when you don't intend to in a fighting game can be a dire mistake that will almost always be punished when facing a skilled player. I have an Xbox controller I used on PC that I modified to add ticks at the left and right, so I could feel that I was going too far during a half circle.

  • @Laughing_Man2
    @Laughing_Man2 Год назад +3

    I bought it two years ago or so when it came out and I returned it. It was disappointing because the previous version of the Hori Fighting Commander (the 2016) was perfect in terms of design and how the D-pad felt. It took the popular Mad Catz SFIV fight pad design (basically a sega genesis controller) and slimmed it down a bit and added two extra shoulder buttons, which was great since the Mad Catz stopped making theirs and you couldn't find them. The new version, the OCTA, changed this design completely, the d-pad feels completely different as well as the buttons. It's very similar to Razer and Victrix "Fight controllers", which just feels like an aftermarket controller with microswitches and not one that is designed specifically for fighting games.

It's a modular controller that have a separate 6 button layout specifically for fighting games. I know you've tried the last Victrix controller and I'm wondering how did you feel about the dpad, particularly the diamond layout attachment? In SF6 you can now map L3/R3 (and possibly touchpad) to an attack button)
    As far as CPT (Capcom pro tour) goes you can't have double buttons. You'd have to set it to something that isn't an action button but then you lose one action or physically disable the button.
    ----
    Attacking Action
    The maximum number of input systems that can be used as attacking actions is eleven(11). However, the same offensive action cannot be assigned to multiple input systems. For example, it is not allowed to have more than one light punch button. When using a controller with more than eleven(11) input systems for attacking actions, measures must be taken in advance to disable the use of unnecessary input systems as attacking actions. Note that the above does not apply to input systems that cannot be used as inputs for attacking actions in the "Controller Settings" in the game (DualSense PS button, mute button, etc.).

    Honestly if they just combine the raion construction with this design it would be a best fight pad. I prefer the weight of the raion, as well clickiness and size of the raion dpad much better, and the version with the pivot works well. I actually like this pad having the gate on analog too, because I actually do a lot of my special moves with the analog and switch back to dpad for movement (not ideal I know, but my special inputs are way faster and easier to do accurately in panic/scramble situations). I ride the gate like you mentioned so I don't drop inputs so it works for me in that sense, but the reason I use the dpad for movement is because I have trouble locking down back instead of down or back for blocking and fuzzy guarding. I would like larger divits for that reason rather than the one you mentioned. It's almost the perfect pad for me.

    Having owned the Hori Fighting Commander and now the Octa version... I can say the older fighting commander is way better. The dpad on the older pad is much smoother and doesn't hurt your thumb. Even resting your thumb in the middle as you described, you will occasionally rub the edges and it irritates my thumb.. I am also dropping certain inputs on the newer dpad that I never drop on the older one, after trying for days to adjust... It's a shame they don't sell the Fighting Commander 3 anymore, so I bought the Switch version and may seek out a converter for tournaments, but I'm not sure they make one for that controller... bummer.

I wish there was a deadzone adjustment in the software so adjust for the diagonals because the amount of times I'm holding a diagonal to crouch block but my character just walks backward and I get hit by a low is ridiculous.

    I just dropped a rant on your Discord regarding my personal issues with "fight pad" design. For the past few years, I've ditched the arcade stick for the fight pad because 1) I don't really have the space to keep a stick, 2) I don't have the money to get a stick worth maintaining, and 3) sticks are too noisy for my household. I currently have a Razer Raion (apparently, a newer version where Razer added a fulcrum to the D-Pad to resolve the previous "bad 360 motion" issue), but like all other fighting-game-oriented controllers, I have an issue with its ergonomics because I've been one of those "hand-over grip" players since the SNES era. If I had the time, money, and resources, I'd design my own controller, but I guess I can hold my own with what I have, but can't reach my full potential.

That game changing for me cause it feels like my rest postion is more around the circle than the cross ! i will train this the week. Depending on your platform you can do some interesting stuff.
      On PC you could do pretty much anything that a stick or hitbox can do on a keyboard.
      It might be a bit odd to start with, but if you already play keyboard and mouse games then you can just map the keys to WASD (and maybe space bar for the jump button, so that both hands can press it) for movement and your choice of keys for attacks with the other hand.
      I did have an idea for a game called "keyboard warriors" that was a fighter designed for keyboard. Essentially the idea was to allow the player to map any move to any button on the keyboard, so you could essentially play it like a regular game, or set up macros to make certain things easier to accomplish. I don't think it would be balanced, but I think that there's an interesting metagame of how many things you set up as a one button move, how you lay them out, and whether the player has the ability to accurately locate and press the button in order to react to the opponent.

      @@NihongoGamer i have the Raion with the pivot but the skipping down input during half circle is still present when you do motion fast... (i have open my controller to see the pivot). My thought about this issue is that direction have "latency". When you press 41236 really fast, the switching still trigger previous input even if you think have release the position so at some point when you are at 2, the controller still see you have pressed 4 (because 1 = 4+2) so when you go to 3 the game see 4+2+6 and register that like a 3. The result is you skip 2 because it never know about 2 alone . The way to fix this is maybe SOCD implemantation in the firmware (4+6 = neutral) like stickless or switchs which are more faster to release the input.

    • @chunli2672
      @chunli2672 2 года назад +1

      skipping down is really a big problem for advanced motion like super in kof xv or guilty gear strive. The game is ok for normal half circle if you miss the down input. But when you need two half circle in a row, it's require the down input because otherwise no super and instead you only get the special attack :(

On both, my execution seems fine for half circles, but I do seem to miss my down blocks and attacks alot more often. I'm coming from an 8bitdo m30, so I thought maybe it was bc the dpad is tighter.
