He teaches my Intro to Music Industry class at Millikin University, this is the best thing I've ever seen. He didn't want to be interviewed in the first place, and only agreed to the interview because they let him wear the chicken suit. Best teacher ever!
Reed Ripple I realize you posted this years ago, but if you’re still in contact or in a position to talk with him at some point, I’m curious if he still has that chicken suit and if he plans to wear it when they are able to perform live again?
1-can you please share the name of class and name and location of college please 2- any guess why they were wearing costumes was it for a halloween broadcast
I am beyond jealous! That would be the one class I would show up early, be the last to leave, do ALL the homework, never miss a class, and not fall asleep during. He may not be some mega rich, ultra famous rock star like Mick Jagger, but to me these guys are right up there with the icons and legends as far as my admiration for them. SO excited about the new album and REALLY hoping they play a show somewhere close enough that I can go see them once this virus crap eases off.
I hope the members from Hum realize the profound effect that their music has had on the lives of so many. It's amazing. Even after all these years, I will always carry it with me.
8 yrs later and I agree - I reallly hope they understand that their impact on the genre, gen z/millenial american music/poetry, and the lives of so many, was so profound --- far greater than the commercial success of their profile would ever suggest.
“Tell me you’re an alternative rock band from Illinois without telling me you’re an alternative rock band from Illinois.” Lol Hum has been one of my favorite bands for decades, but I’ve never seen them in an interview. They did not disappoint. 😂
120 Minutes was my musical teacher and older brother growing up. It was the best show on tv for me for many years. Matt Pinfield was the best host of all.
I love that there's no context to the costumes. Is it Halloween? Well, who knows? They don't mention it at all. I like to think they gave all their interviews in costume.
Do you know the name of the band from Chicago who they toured with briefly with something released on Sub Pop? Replayed it a number of times but can't decipher what he said. Thanks.
thats what i always wondered.. But then again, i like the fact that hum will never be/never has been a super commercial/popular band. this small community is one of the best communities in the entire music realm in my opinion.
Because the best art has never been popular among the masses. Partly due to most people not having much refined taste but also because the industry keeps great artists suffering and in the dark.
*Shawn White* is awesome for uploading this piece. I still have the VHS tape which contains this very interview somewhere in one of my boxes in my garage. Thanks man
If possible, can you ask him if he still has the costume and if he plans to wear it during shows once they are able to play shows again? If he does have it, but not wear it, if he is ok with it, I volunteer to wear it at whatever show I’m able to attend. I’ll even do the chicken dance during the encore! Hell, if he needs a FOH or monitor engineer (or even just another stage hand), I’ll gladly wear it while I work the entire show!
In fact, if it sounds appealing, one of the companies I work for that provides sound, video, lighting, staging etc. is planning on doing a BIG concert the moment they lift restrictions here in California. He’s planning on setting up a HUGE stage (possibly stages if enough bands want to play) with elaborate lights, multiple video walls, HUGE line arrays, and pretty much everything he’s got to try to replicate a full arena rock show, just without pyro. At this point, he’s thinking he’s only going to be able to get local cover bands since he doesn’t think he can attract any “real” band to come out to Modesto California to play 2-3 nights. But, trust me, the amount of stage dressing is going to be likely the most elaborate stage that the cover bands that agree to do the show will likely ever play on in their careers. Since he’s providing it all, it’d be a way to kick off Hum’s first show after the new album released without breaking the bank to make Hum’s comeback nothing short of EPIC! The shows after might feel a little sparse in comparison, but it’ll be worth it... Hope you see this and reply back...
Damn, the videos are all cut out. I wanted to watch them. Miss this show, I think it was cancelled in 2001? e: just looked it up, summer of 2000. I may have watched the final episode, but I don't recall

The most underrated band ever.
Yeah weren't they a big influence on the Deftones?

Man I still jam these guys all the time. One of the best bands to come out of the 90's in my opinion.
my favorite band of all time, I've been lucky that they've started playing shows again
I love how professional Matt is while interviewing a dog and chicken! Kudos to you, Sir!

HUM hatched in Champaign
Shawn, you forgot to mention Matt Pinfield is wearing the Black Francis costume.

Stars is a legendary song in my opinion
I remember this episode!! I saw Hum with Swervedriver here in Houston in 1998...fucking amazing show! I still think about that show...
Fitzgeralds? Great show! Saw them at Abyss in 96 also
i still think about it because my ears are still ringing
That’s a great double bill. Wow.
5:16 *crosses chicken legs*
Laughing so hard at this
The 90s, people! Alternative bands in funny suits being all tongue-in-cheek :)
Swervedriver, The Promise Ring, Shiner, and Castor. They name dropped all excellent bands.
Do you know the name of the band from Chicago who they toured with briefly with something released on Sub Pop? Replayed it a number of times but can't decipher what he said. Thanks.

He's probably like, "I've seen worse."
These guys produce a wall of sound.

@CornerBoy If Shiner, Hum and Failure played a show together...I would simply die.
Shinder, Castor, Hum, Swervedriver and Failure? I'd stab a fool to see that one. Was lucky enough to see Castor and Hum in St. Louis. GREAT SHOW.
