I remember when this aired and saw some of the original shows these performances came from. This show was like this feast with all the bands I liked from what was then called College Rock and later became known as Alternative. The day this show aired my family was in the process of moving to a new house. I’m glad there are still young bands who are finding inspiration from this era, which would be late 80s to the mid 90s underground music, which to me I liken to the seminal bands of the 60s.
noLuckyStrike09 bonehead... hahahaha, exactly. I never remembered them having such a heavy sound. Also, watching 120 now I am reminded how much crap music was out there. We tend to conveniently and selectively forget about that.
I forgot the guy from Live looked like John Lennon at one point lol. Their MTV Unplugged performance is phenomenal. Not really talked about but they absolutely crushed it. Highly recommend
The 90’s could have done away with the Rollins Band- No TALENT AT ALL!!! Man those 90’s record companies really thought anyone that can form a band and wear flannels could sell records!!!
davidmreyes77 this is the 90s , the decade of irony. After a while no one really knew when or if somebody was serious or no. You barely knew yourself what you actually liked or meant

Rollins never stopped being Rollins even when he became a media star. His music and band members crushed! "The End of Silence" was a great album. "Low Self Opinion". Chris Hasket on Guitar, Sim Cain on drums Andrew Weiss on bass. Golden! Next album, "Weight" Picked up a jazz bassist like Melvin Gibbs to handle this album , he crushed it "Liar" . Johnette Napolitano, singer from Concrete blonde should of been a huge star! She somehow missed the bus to huge fame. She should of been on it! SHe did good but should of been great! Nirvana? Hit That GOLD STAR! Who knew the drummer Dave Grohl, would make a band off the drums with ,"Foo Fighters" that are huge right now in 2023! Nirvana influenced as many as Led Zeppelin to start bands! They invented a genre. They shifted the current for everyone who played and listened to music. Violent Femmes, made history and are a part of history but they never left the aura of that first album. Alanis Morissette , changed the course of music with her album. Till this day it's covered and she is in demand. Damn, they developed a Broadway show off her album. Back story on that album. Flea and David Navarro from Janes Addiction knew the drummer, Taylor Hawkins and heard them in the studio next store. They went next store and the rest is history. Bass line from"You Ought Know" for one. That album was huge! The bands I passed. "They imploded. Dropped a song and didn't come back. might have made a great song, but sunk like a ship as a band.
Is this back when Noel and Liam Gallgher were getting along? The first Oasis 💿 I purchased was What’s the Story Morning Glory around 1995. I also picked up Be Here Now in ‘97
I went down a rabbit hole of old MTV and Kennedy and awesome videos and I had to stop I started legit getting depressed!!!!! Nothing like growing up in the 90’s and early 2000.anybody has a time machine I’ll pay!!!!!!!!
What a crazy time in music. By 96 the whole grunge and alt thing was winding down and nu-metal was starting to take shape. I was a 20-year-old in a dead-end job with no direction, and all the themes I loved in high school had been used up and turned into theme parks. Teenage angst had given way to early adult malaise and the last great rock revolution was in a similar decline, but we didn't know it at the time.
I know they aren't remembered quite as fondly or respectfully as many of the other 90s rock legends... but if you weren't rocking those Silverchair and Bush debuts summer of 95 you weren't welcome in me & my friends' 12-13 yo basements.
*Nicole 4 Eva* The movie _Fear_ completely ruined that song for me (edit: the Bush song); as well as "Wild Horses" (the cover version or not). I hear these these songs and I bust out laughing. "Chemicals Between Us" doesn't do that. Marky Mark and Reese Whippersnapper ruin everything I swear
2023. First time I listen to Rollins Band. Born in '77. Wow....
I remember taping this as well. In particular his comment on Dookie 😆
henry rolins.....back in the 90s when you seen a dude with no shoes on and a bunch of tattoos you knew he was fkn crazy
Thankyou for upload
I'm a 40 year old man, I can smell the 90s
Me too i just turned 40. These were some good times.
im 48 and i still can smell the 90s as well ... except maybe when i smell burt toast for no reason ... ;)
So i think you remember nothing?!?..... Ok maybe a little taste after fresh puke.... Could i permit, i think.... Skoal girls and boys

Really great song even nowadays....
I still remember the first time I heard Liar. Wow, that was a lifetime ago, & I played the hell out of that tape.
Bring it back
watching henry's slow descent into madness is the best part abt this video
Sure, if you find people with personality disorders funny. I mean, if you're a sociopath, that makes perfect sense.
@@le_th_ huh
Having to listen to green day, oasis and bush will do that to a man…
@@FirstnameLastname-mb2ek 3 great bands
@@alfiegaishauser5326 I agree for the most part, but they're also three bands that seem hand-picked to enrage Henry Rollins
I love the '90s!! The great time!!
Henry's sarcasm is wonderful.
😂😂😂 He knows he kinda sold out by being there lamoo he says how humiliating it is before the last commercial.
@@Positive_Tea Yeah it's certainly funny to watch.
Most important show in TV history
This was when MTV was called Music Television
Early 90's was a wonderful time.
As a kid I just thought of "Liar" as another metal song but it's a really deep representation of a part of reality.
So great
who knew you could fit the best 120 minutes into just 44 minutes
The secret is that they compressed the 120 minutes.
If you didn't live before 2000 you really lost

What a golden age the 90s were
Honestly it was!
So glad to have grew up in that era
You can almost hear him melting introducing the clips, and the second commercial break conversation where the directors told him to "liven up".
Wow......nostalgia.......I waa in high school or College during this....going to the underground hardcore Punk and metal shows!
Oh Alanis ,she was lovely
Johnette Napolitano is a fking goddess in this performance.
Been a big fan since "God is a Bullet", never saw/heard this performance of "Everybody Knows", holy effing crap that was AMAZING!!
MTV was amazing, I can't stand it now and never watch it now...
Concrete Blond's rendition of "Everybody Knows" is awsome, such a powerful voice and just required a great acoustic guitarist.
Three of the bands (Green Day, Live & Violent Femmes) all making appearances at Woodstock 94
Henry Rollins proving you can be next level charismatic and next level sarcastic at the same time.
Thank you 🙏🏼
This was my decade! Best times.

Never was a fan of Oasis back in the 90s but, holy cow, they freaking nailed it there.
They sure did, when their guitarist bonehead comes in at 1:15 .. his guitar sound was always so heavy

Agree agree agree!!! Oasis
The "next" Beatles
Their first album is a great, great rock'n'roll record..!
In todays world that does not care about TV or movie theaters…could the impact of something like MTV happen again?
Thanks for this video, so classic. A piece of art.
Oh ! Thx for the share

Can anyone really blame Gwen for falling for him?
Omg Ed Kowalski with hair!!
I wish I had a chance to live through the 90s again.
Every time I hear "Liar" I can't help hearing the Beavis and Butt-head commentary 😆😆
Concrete Blonde's cover of "Everybody Knows"...doesn't get much better.
R.I.P 1996... #foreveryoung
Awesome to see Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins both playing drums
so sick
The sarcasm is off the scale.

Johnette Napolitano. Incredible. I saw it coming.

henry rollins man...wow
Hearing Rollins say the word "dookie" was life changing

The best show MTV ever had.
Seems like yesterday 😮
At the time, I really didn't like Alanis.. but watching her now makes me so nostalgic of that era. Wish I could go back.
She was magnetic live. Unbelievably charismatic person. No wonder Kevin Smith picked her to play God.
40:09 RIP Taylor Hawkings! F’n Legend! 🙌🏻
Violent Femmes - "Blister In the Sun" was ahead of its time because that song was already 10 years old when they performed it at 36:19
