I'm 71 and have suffered from UTIs since I was 14 in the 60's. I saw a urologist monthly, then every 3-6 months for 10 years. I almost lost my daughter in my 5th month (1970) as it went into pyelonephritis with 104 F temp. As I got older, and cranberry juice became more known, I started drinking it. Then I started taking the supplements. I haven't had an UTI in years.
I used to get UTI's at least twice a year. My system doesn't tolerate antibiotics very we... I started taking cranberry gummies once a day that are manufactured by a well known company and haven't had a UTI since. UTI's are no fun so I am very grateful that this seems to be working for me.
Thank you especially for mentioning no sugar in the juice thanks
Cranberry juice IS NOT cranberry cocktail by ocenan spray which is full of sugar. So shop carefully.
You are absolutely correct!
It still contains cranberry juice
@bulldogbrower6732 but too much sugar, and often other juices mixed in. So the ingredient you need is not the primary one. I've found cheaper more pure cranberry juices.
@@joywebster2678 Can you please give a few examples like zero or low sugar types you could suggest? I bought the 100% Cranberry one and can understand people getting a sweet one WITHOUT as much sugar added.
The first UTI that I had, I reported to the doctor and was given antibiotics. However, the other 2-3 times over the years, I did not go to the doctor since I recognized the symptoms. I drank tons of 100 percent cranberry juice and water until the symptoms fully subsided. I recall it took approximately four days.
Thanks for the info. I had a UTI at the time I had my hip replacement. I asked the orthopedist if there was any chance that infection could be introduced into my hip due to this infection and he said no. I had had two doses of Cipro (12 hrs apart) immediately prior to the hip surgery. I'm a year out from surgery and no infection. Thankful for that.
We spend the winter in Florida, where I swim 3 days a week in a pool that only adults use. I never get a UTI in the winter months. But when I return home and swim in a pool where there are children, I invariably get an infection. My doctor says there’s probably no connection, but I have stopped swimming in the summer. Plus I drink the unsweetened cranberry juice now. But I can’t help but think that swimming where little children routinely void their bladders in the water can be dangerous to us senior citizens.
Thanks for reinforcing why I haven't entered public pools for years.
@@gaywells7340 could it be that you need to drink more non flouride water in the summer and get uti from dehydration.
I'm disabled - I have Spina Bifida, so I catherterize. I used to end up in the hospital every year with a bad UTI until I started drinking between 80-100 oz of fluid a day. I tried cranberry juice years ago but it never helped. As long as I drink a lot, I'm good. Haven't had a full-blwn UTI in over 11 years.
@@tamicoil7069 the MIRACLE of non flouride water. Society would be so much healthier, if not totally healed from every sickness and illness possible with drinking more than half their body weight of non flouride water.
Process foods and sugary drinks trick and alter our taste buds, so that we do not really get thirsty and desire other processed things to eat and drink.
I was plagued with utis and did all the things but to no avail. I started taking cranberry capsules and haven't had one for many years. One cap per day worked for me. Thanks docs.
I have a history of UTIs from the age of four (I’m 60 yr old female). Once years ago I thought I had another infection but turns out it was likely an acute case of interstitial cystitis. Too many strawberries for Father’s Day and cranberry juice to help relieve the supposed uti. Once I switched to nothing but water to drink, symptoms cleared up in a matter of a couple of days.
In college, I had back to back UTI and yeast infections. I finally went gunho, washed and boiled my underwear, did a major grapefruit extract for 6 weeks, improved hygiene before after intercourse, change underclothes regularly. I still get UTIs about twice a year when I forget to stay well hydrated but drink unsugared cranberry juice. Helps tremendously
@@MichaelTheophilus906 Yep. No wash, No fun.
A urologist told me as a man it's OK to drink cranberry juice because I like the taste of it. But men that drink it daily to prevent a urinary tract infection, it is common that it leads to an irritated urinary tract in men but not in women.
I can not handle antibiotics. It’s messed with my intestinal flora badly. So when I get UTI’s I take cranberry supplements in capsule form which my family doctor recommended and told me how to take daily until all symptoms are gone. (I DID NOT take the juice form because I’m too affected by sugars and so don’t recommended it being treated that way because of the sugar load BUT if it doesn’t bother you than more powa to you!) And they work with PERFECTION. Even my Step-Dad who is an Orthodontist had a urinary infection that wasn’t responding properly to antibiotics. So I finally told him to try adding in the Cranberry supplement capsules. And FINALLY it cleared. So I believe! He did also. Cranberry all the way all day! Lol! 😉🍒
I love you two! I learn SOOO much from your messages. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 💙
From personal experience, it helps yes, and I was told this by urologist years ago. I had a UTI so bad I fainted and had to go to ER. BUT unsweetened, and don't guzzle a jug of it at a time or it can irritate. It basically rinses out your urethra. You still need an antibiotic to treat the infection. I drink some to stay flushed out.
I am going thru my 9th UTI since April of this year. Have exhausted all the antibiotics that are available. Was told I have ecoli in my urine. US showed no blockages in my urine. But they said they see a mass on my left kidney for which I have to now get a CT scan. No kidney issues. Can’t get appointment until September 21st. Now I’m scared, very frightened. Could this cause UTI?
I don’t want to even think about it might be the big “C” word. No one should have to wait two weeks to get this done. Prayers are needed.
I read that farmers give Bactrim to cows which causes ab resistance. Told a urologist but he said I'm not a cow.
I hope the best for you. Try to stay calm and focus your attention on task that keep you busy.
@@denisewilson834 putting you in tonight's rosary
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and prayers. What country are you in ? Can you get a CT scan in a private facility ?
Hi Denise,
Male, 62, and living in Canada. I have had 7 UTIs in the last 14 years. I have just gone through exactly what you are describing.
I had an ultrasound which revealed the presence of cysts in my kidneys. This may be what your physician is referring to. At his recommendation, I went for a CT scan. The results were that although there are indeed cysts present, which DO affect the kidney's ability to drain, which in turn DO lead to UTIs, the cysts I found out were at least benign.
If by chance you are living in Canada and making use of our "much vaunted" Canadian Health Care System, my best advice for you is to spend some money on yourself, and go to the private system. I did, and got more accomplished in a single visit than I did with numerous visits to my over-booked urologist in the public system. I shopped around, made an appointment, and got in there within a few days. He ran a battery of tests, and I got the results of tests by the time I had finished doing up my belt.
As for the CT scan, if in fact you are Canadian, then yes... it can take a long time to get an appointment. For this, as well, I went to a private clinic. Call one up, and ask them how much it will cost you. Here, they range in price from anywhere around $1,300 (available that afternoon) down to $495.00 (available in a few days). I chose the latter. I had it done within a week. I have insurance at work that covered some of the cost. But... for peace of mind, this is some money you can spend on yourself and not feel guilty about.
Presently, my physician has me on Flo-Max (generic name: Tamsulosin). I am able to void with greater ease, and he says that this should stop the infections.
Denise, I had the same anxiety as you until the results came back. I know what you are feeling at this moment. If you wish to write me back, please feel free. I wish you good health, and peaceful sleep.
Best regards.
Cranberry juice, d-mannose, or potassium citrate all seem to accelerate the transit time for me, and then, not holding it , but voiding frequently and fully.
My middle name is UTI. Being diabetic, I can’t do the juice thing as sugar levels almost doubles in juices. Common for diabetics get UTIs. I drink loads of fluids including 2 or 3 coffees in the mornings. My infections are not always e-coli. I’ve had K-pneumonia bacteria twice and had troubles getting rid of bacteria with antibiotics. With being a senior, I also got confusion with one of those two infections. Last UTI I had a few months ago was a bacterial infection from my gut. Some weird name I can’t even pronounce.
Thanks for informative talk. 😊❤️🇨🇦
Glad to hear you are better. Try fermented foods.
I searched and food non sweetened cranberry juice. More expensive, more cranberries.
When you said “ chronic “ , how often is that ? Heard it’s common amongst elderly people.
I used to love tart cran drinks, but now they seemed to have jacked up the sugar level so it tastes like liquid candy. I liked to chuck in a teaspoon of bread yeast and recap it for a couple days and the plastic container would bulge with carbonation. In the past cran-blueberry was widely available and it was heavenly. Now food companies just increase sugar and salt in everything instead of natural goodness.
The day after Thanksgiving, you can get bags of fresh cranberries for 50 cents to a dollar in the produce dept and freeze them. Pull out a half-bag, pop in the blender with a little water, strain through a fine mesh sieve if you want, add honey or other sweetener to your taste. Leave it concentrated to add water or ice as you go, or add more water from the start, and store in the fridge. (I use mason jars or re-use other glass, so you also don’t get stuck with nasty plastic jugs.) You control the sweetness and strength, no preservatives, tastes delicious, and you’re not paying for all that watered down sugar! You can even add other fruit like blueberries, but since most don’t last as long as cranberries, I’d do smaller batches or just add add’l fruits as you go.
That's what I remember from about 10 years ago. Studies showed that cranberry juice prevented bacteria from adhering to the wall of the blader or to other parts of the urfinary tract.
During the early years of menopause, I had what I would call overactive bladder where I felt I needed to go too often, or had similar symptoms to a mild(ish) UTI. I started drinking an ounce of unsweeetened cranberry juice in 8 ounces of water daily, and that whole problem went away. I did this for about 4 years. I don’t need to do this daily now, but occasionally I feel those early sensations of bladder pain and get right on the cranberry juice. No UTI’s treated with antibiotics now for over 20 years.
Wow that is awesome
I've used it many times for a "kidney" infection. (Kidney starts hurting) It usually helps within a few hours.
D-Mannose supplements have both cured and prevented UTIs for me... and they were NEVER suggested or mentioned by physicians treating the chronic UTIs I struggled with for 6 months in 2023. We need our docs to be better educated and to also care about treatments that don't work to increase their profit margin!!!
Thanks for sharing
Exactly . I did the antibiotics until a holistic group recommended the D mannose.
I have a female yellow lab hearing dog. The first year i had her she was constantly getting UTI’s. She had, as you two mentioned, an anatomical reason for the UTI’s. Surgery helped but didn’t fully cure the problem. The college vet school at Oregon State University suggested trying her on Crananidin. A cranberry extract for dogs. Whole Cranberries can kill a dog folks. It is not cheap but it is less than a vet visit. Giving her the minimum amount she still got a UTI. Increasing it to the maximum dosage, and it seems to have prevented further instances. So as a precaution, i find it better to keep her on it. Now i have had several years with her having no UTI’s. When she is sick, it’s a sick day for me too.
Thank you for sharing. We love our pooches
The on-screen graphics recommend "voting after sexual intercourse." OK! I'm all for voting! Glad you didn't recommend any particular party or issue, though. Let's keep this about medicine 😂
And in case you're wondering, it should be "VOIDING after sexual intercourse." OK! I'm all for peeing, too!
Ha ha. Hey guys, your caption stated to consider "voting" after sexual intercourse. Great idea!
That’s why I had to play it back several times! 😹
@@catherinemori4496 I wonder what we're supposed to vote for!
I have experience with UTIs due to having a catherter all the time. I think unsweetened cranberry juice helps a bit, but something that helps better is a supplement called Plantvital D-Mannose that comes in capsule form. There were studies with it that helped peopled taking 2 grams a day. I have used it for over a year now and have not had any UTIs since starting to use it. Beats taking anti biotics for sure.
I eat dried cranberries with my 2-3 times per week granola. Haven’t had a UTI in a very long time….knocking wood now😅
I had hematospermia from ecoli. Guzzled a qt of unsweetened cranberry juice a day. It helped but only as long as I kept guzzling the juice. Doxy for 6weeks helped. No cipro for me ever.
I use cranberry snd palmgranites mix juice monthly one for kidneys other for blood pressure how ever a lot of times the uti sneaks up on me if I don’t keep a regularly I’m a kindney stone factory too msny oxalates in diet thry tell me but I love my greens
Was told to start taking Utica cranberry pacs and D-Mannose supplements. A week now not seeing the improvements I was hoping for. Now What???
It's for prevention not treatment for an active UTI. Only antibiotics can cure UTI's
There's grocery store cranberry juice, and there's juice extractor cranberry juice. The 1st is a refreshing beverage, the later will clean you out! I'm curious to know if a small amount of extracted juice (not a cheap adventure) would be more effective than larger amounts of processed store bought juice.
Important distinction
I drink cranberry juice and I take d-mannose. So far I haven't got another UTI.
D-mannose is more helpful than cranberry juice. My doctor advised me to take 2 grams daily.
D mannose is what I’m taking now.
I use a concentrated cranberry supplement recommended by my urologist and methenamine hippurate 1 g tablet. I think this has slows the number of UTIs but it hasn't eliminated them. Good news about the cranberry effect. Thank you.
Cranberry juice definitely helped me to lessen the number of UTI's that I experienced when I was younger. On a different note, a very wise gynecologist told me to urinate after having sex, which also help lessen occurrences.
Yes we mentioned this !
From Mexico thank you for the great information! Gracias
Cranberry Juice works for me…make sure it is 100 percent….not mixed with other juices to make it taste better. I drink a juice glass full every few hours when I suspect I have a UTI coming on, not sure why but it works. Nursing homes hand it out regularly to residents.
Yes pure. Yes no added sugar
Due to my Spinal Cord Injury I have a neurogenic bladder so I have a Suprapubic Catheter inserted into a hole just below my belly into my bladder. I would get frequent UTI's despite keeping the area clean and changing the catheter regularly in a sterile environment at a nursing station. I started taking a Cranberry Complex from a well known supplements company called Jaimesons and since then I have had no UTI's. I stopped after 1 year to see if I still needed it and within a month I had another UTI. That made me a believer. I'm not sure if the juice alone would do the same thing, but I like these capsules because they are easy to take and don't affect my blood sugar like the juice does.
Lots of studies and menopause specialists suggest using HRT, specifically vagifem, to prevent UTI’s.
I used to drink cranberry when I felt a UTI coming on. I had frequent infections and was then later treated for that underlying issue. But cranberry really preserved my quality of life for ages.
Give D-Mannose powder a try as well. It worked very well for me.
Yup
I got a UTI right before surgery and it had to be rescheduled
I am post menopausal and had frequent UTIs. Was referred to a urogynaecologist who put me on vaginal estrogen and D-mannose 2gm daily. The D-mannose is OTC and costs about $40 per month but no UTIs in the year since I started this regimen.
Is it true that uti causing bacteria are often present in the bladder but cause no problems? Drinking adequate water prevents overpopulation of uti causing bacteria..
D-mannos (my understanding is that this is the active/effective ingredient in cranberries) supplementation has changed my life! UTI's every 3 mos down to 1 every year-and-a-half to 2 years. Game changing.
Ive had lots of UTIs over the years, Lots of water, D Mannose and cranberry pills have helped a lot.
I use to get uti’s a lot in my 30’s and 40’s and my doctor recommended pure cranberry juice. First sign of a UTR I would drink a lot of pure cranberry juice. It worked for me most times, other wise I went on medication. I’m 63 now and haven’t had a UTI for years, but I do know the symptoms and hopefully catch it at its early stage if it happens again.
Two years out from radical prostatectomy and no UTI. Had knee replace 3 years ago with no probs. Regular/sporadic cranberry juice drinker not for any particular reason, I just LIKE IT! Serendipitous that I get a prophylactic effect for UTIs too! (BTW PSA is 0.0!)
D-Mannose has been a life saver for the UTI. I refused to take any more antibiotics as it was only making it return more often. Whenever I sense an UTI coming in, I take half a teaspoon of pure D-Mannose powder. Works very well and flushes the bacteria out. It causes the urinary tract smooth so the bacteria cant grip the walls of the tract.
If you have recurring UTI, please give pure D-Mannose powder a try. Doctors seldom mention this.
I self treated and infection with cranberry pills. The symptoms went away and a day or two later, I had kidney pain. My doctor, told me never to do that again, or I could wind up septic.
I laugh every time I hear , "wipe front to back". Name one woman who can do this successfully. My last doctor knows, she's like, " I'm not even going to tell you to do it, because it's next to impossible"
I take 1 or 2 gelcaps (4200 units each, I think), every day, as I had read that it was good for urinary health;
I'm happy to hear that there's some scientific proof!
How much daily cranberry juice was used in these studies, and does it need to be drunk at "full strength," or can you dilute it in water and drink it throughout the day?
It cured me from UTI really great stuff ❤
I had a lot of UTI’s after my bladder suspension surgery. Dr. prescribed a supplement called D Mannos which helps tremendously, and a cranberry supplement I take twice a week. So far, so good.
Thank you, gentlemen. This was helpful.
Thanks a lot. I have cranberry capsules in stock to ‘ treat ‘ should I get an infection.
After my father had bladder cancer and he had an ostomy bag the Doctor had him drink cranberry juice I think it helped this was back in the 1980s
I have had chronic UTI issues and neither urologist I saw could offer any solutions. If there isn’t anything to diagnose, you are on your own. Please, someone help us find answers. We need more research for female urinary issues.
I use the supplement and it's very constructed and works very well to keep them away because once women get one they come back more easily
With or without vodka bc I love my CapeCods!
After my last UTI, I started taking cranberry concentrate capsules. No UTI since.
Drs FYI: long term isc user. 18/6 fasting to promote autophagy = 'unbelievable' impact upon infection resistance.
In the last year I've had 6 UTIs. Had a CT scan at a Urologist. Came back clear. Nothing in my bladder when they did an internal check. My Urologist prescribed a low dose Bactrim, 1 a day. I don't take them because I, too, believe I shouldn't take antibiotics willy-nilly.
I wish i had you two as doctors, maybe I wouldn't mind going. You both make me laugh. Can you do one on DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) what happens with it, how it heals and things you can do for it. #IamAWeightlifter Thank you guys!!
You should have stressed more on NO SUGAR juice should be the only way to consume because sugar is what causes UTI's. I add Stevia because like most people I can not stand drinking straight unsweetened cranberry juice.
6:04 very judicious, judicial is re: legal proceedings..unless a Judge ordered you to do it, in which case it is judicial & then you would be correct
Thanks Cliff.
Male, dob 1948. Never had a UTI that I know of. Eat a lot of cranberries around Thanksgiving (USA). Mostly cranberries in a can. I think my immune sys works pretty good. Haven't had a cold in 30 years. I also think my lifestyle helps. I make Emily Dickinson look like a flirtatious vamp. In other words, I'm allergic to uninteresting people. And most humans are uninteresting. Solitude has been the most effective vaccine since Isaac Newton left Trinity College (1665) to avoid the plague.
I'm taking turmeric for my symptoms, 😊
I had chronic uti’s for years. It was treated again and again with antibiotics which we know is not a great solution. I tried cranberry juice and the pill form and it did nothing for me. It did not cure nor prevent uti’s in me. What has worked now for over a decade is boric acid suppositories. Not for eating, lol, but for putting up the vagina. This creates an acidic environment (where maybe there wasn’t one before) which also affects the urethra. I suspect it helps prevent the bad bacteria from traveling up there. Hope this isn’t tmi, but I thought people should know.
Thank you!
Boric acid is a poison mostly used to kill insects

Hello Dr Weening and Dr. zal zal. I have used cranberry juice for a UTI. Cranberry juice can be sour. Be careful sour not so nice.
Apple cider vinegar 3 times a day by one week you are good
Oh, you NAMED THEM.
Cool Beans!
What about blueberry or cherry juice? These are anecdotally useful to prevent UTIs.
Cranberry Juice is high in sugar. I take Cranberry capsules, 4,200 mg. 2 in a.m. and 2 in p.m.. this stopped my UTI issues. I'm 77 yr old female. These caps are made by Finist brand. This product causes the lining to be slick and prevents bacteria from adhere. The Cranberry caps do not raise blood sugar.
Is there something that diabetics could use in place of cranberry juice?
Would eating dried cranberries daily help?
I find that it is very difficult to find pure cranberry juice without any sugar added🤔
Guyabano, try it🇵🇭
Is there anything we can drink or take that works better than cranberry juice as prevention? Also, are cranberry supplements as effective as the juice?
Methenamine hippurate. Prescription only.
@@johnnyb1497 Thank you!
My mother's doctor used to tell her that. I doubted that worked and I considered the high intake of sugar by drinking juice in general is unhealthy and outweighs any benefits. I should have simply made my mother drink more water. Maybe simply more water would have been good enough.
Sugar is loved by jock itch, athletes foot, uti, yeast infection. Cancer too. Take heed.
How could an infection go from the bladder into the knee? I never had any discomfort down there, maybe because I don't swim.
I can't take the strong antibiotics that are prescribed for UTI's like Cipro and Nitrofurantoin-MCR. I have to take Plavix for heart problem and these drugs are dangerous for me. I have a lingering UTI and need to do something to fix it. I will try drinking cranberry juice and taking some AZO cranberry softgels. 🙋❤🙏
Azo sucks. Get 36mg PAC cranberry supplements and 2g d-mannose per day. It's the best for prevention but can't treat an active infection. You need antibiotics to cure that infection.
Northern cranberry juice works my grandma said to drink she says it works I believer I drink a jug in a week
Wow!
It works
Crazy question do you think that cranberry juice would stop yeast infections and jock itch problems
I drink around a gallon of water a day, plus unsweetened iced tea and even a can or two of coke, haven’t had but one UTI and that was in the 1970s when dehydrated at summer band camp! In fact, I drink (and pee) so much that new doctors always want to test my sugar, but it’s always normal. So evidently good bacteria and such in that area, but my digestion sucks, so there’s that… 😂

I've never voted after intercourse. But I have voided.
Has anyone voted for more intercourse? I know I have!
It helps me
I’ve had UTI’s since my 20’s (now 68), stopped getting them for a long time, but have had a couple in the last two years.
Urologist recommended Trunature cranberry capsules containing Pacran whole cranberry, fruit powder, and fruit extract; 1/day.
Pure cberry juice is vile. Not sure if I should reorder these capsules, bc I don’t know if they’re helping. Did the study you referenced include supplements, or just juice?
(I’ve always had a huge issue with doctors treating UTI’s. Do they really expect you to drive to a lab for a urinalysis and then wait 3 days for the culture? Only docs who have never had a UTI would even suggest such a thing!)
I have spinabifida and have to cath myself because I have no spleen I’ve been told that when I get a uti it’s not a matter of if I go septic but when
