The Unfortunate & Strange Career Of Yellowcard

- The unfortunate history of Yellowcard, one of the most legendary pop-punk bands of all time, who throughout their 2 decade career toured relentlessly (co-headlining with other big bands such as All Time Low, New Found Glory and Good Charlotte), released over 10 albums, had about a dozen different members including Ben Dobson, Ryan Key, Sean Mackin, Ryan Mendez, Longineau Parsons, Ben Harper... were huge on the warped tour circuit, headlined stages at festivals and more!
However they did face some adversity, so today we are talking about the unfortunate and strange career of Yellowcard, including:
Ryan Key potentially not getting along with Ben Harper and Sean Mackin
The reason behind their break up and their hiatus
Paper Walls and Lights and Sounds not performing nearly as well as Ocean Avenue, which was a legendary album including the hits Way Away, Only One, Believe, Breathing and Empty Apartment.
Signing with Capitol Records and leaving a few years later.
Sean Mackin becoming a car salesman
Ben Harper being kicked out during a promotional cycle and more!
Needles to sy though, Yellowcard had an incredible career and not many punk rock or pop punk bands can say they have had a similar level of success - with that many banging songs (Here I Am Alive, Hang You Up, For You And Your Denial, Always Summer etc) and that many successful tours / sold out concerts.

Yo fam! If anyone is keen for that interview with Ben Harper about his Yellowcard departure that I mentioned, here’s the link podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mike-herrera-podcast/id608614435?i=1000489005782
Yellowcard is one of my all time favorites. I owe some of my best high school memories to Yellowcard (2003-2007)
u hit bro
Pete Mosely, former Yellowcard bassist once said in an interview somewhere in Yellowcard's history, had they released Paper Walls first over Lights & Sounds, that things might have been different for them, and I agree. Paper Walls sounded like a true successor to Ocean Avenue. Paper Walls was more in-tune with Ocean Avenue and I believe the consensus among the band and the fans is that Lights & Sounds while solid now, it did absolutely alienate a lot of people who loved Ocean Avenue.
Can we take a moment to remember what an outstandingly fantastic drummer LPIII has been to the band?
He don't get a lot of credit. But yes ! An amazing drummer !
Paper Walls is such a great album (definitely my favorite YC album), it's crazy to hear that the record companies thought of it as a flop. Light & Sounds is great too... yea it's a departure from the sound of Ocean Avenue but evolution isn't a bad thing.
I think it’s because at the time people were more into emo, screamo, post hardcore etc and weren’t into pop punk or mainstream rock as much. Therefor it underperformed and the label weren’t happy 😿
@@davesmusicchannel3590 I know that Ryan had problems with the vocal chords at the time when Lights and Sounds came out and he couldn't sing at all. Yellowcard could not tour as much as they did with OA, because of the Ryan's voice problems. That might be one of the perhaps many reasons why L&S weren't succesful. But i do really enjoy Lights and sounds myself.
I cried when they posted that the grandpa from Dear Bobbie passed away. I never thought I could cry over the death of a person who I never met.
The reason the label support for paper walls stopped was because shortly after they released it their label got bought and sold multiple times, and this album, along with other bands albums signed to that label at the time, we basically left dead in the water. It didn’t really have to do with the quality of the record.
Thank you paper walls was awesome. I think they pushed themselves in a good direction.
Yellowcard is my favorite band, I’ve loved them since I heard “Way Away” on SSX3. I’ve followed their career ever since and they never disappointed me personally. I loved each record. I was sad to hear when they announced they were breaking up, but I’m glad to see Ryan Key continuing doing his own solo music.
I could go on and on about my favorite songs, but I’ll mention my top two from each, including “The Underdog EP”.
Underdog EP: “Rocket” and “Underdog”
One for the Kids: “Starstruck” and “October Nights”
Ocean Avenue: “Breathing” and “Only One”
Lights and Sounds: “City of Devils” and “Waiting Game”, third would be “How I Go”
Paper Walls: “Shrink the World” and “Dear Bobbie”
WYTTSY: “Soundtrack” and “Hang You Up”
Southern Air: “Here I Am Alive” and “Awakening” (side note: “Ten” is a tear-jerker)
Lift a Sail: “MSK” and “California”
Final Album: “Fields and Fences” and “A Place We Set Afire”
I got fortunate to see them in Atlanta, GA on their final tour. They signed my car tag I had labeled “OCEANAVE” and they loved it. Being around a bunch of people that genuinely loved their music like me was such a unforgettable experience, one of the best nights of my life.
However, I say all this and I have to mention my favorite song by Yellowcard, I think their best, has to be “Gifts and Curses” from the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack. Such a masterpiece and I was so glad they played it live.
i agree Gifts and Curses is a masterpiece, gives me chills everytime i listen
Weird seeing someone stand up for a band that wanted to keep suing a DEAD MAN. Kind of trash 🗑
@@MortusSweet Chris brown beat the hell out of Rihanna and people still praise him, Cardi B used to drug men and steal money from them but she’s still popular, Billie Eillish is all about body positivity except for when it comes to men but people still play her music. No artist/band is perfect
That's how I first heard them too ayyyy
@@MortusSweet Good music but they're complete scumbags. Long live Juice WRLD 🐐
I so can't wait to see them live again this July in Jacksonville Celebrating 20 Years of Ocean Avenue!!! Been a fan since 2003 and I love every album. I'll say this Lights and Sounds is 2nd fave album of theirs.
Yeah they crashed it at slamdunk festival a week or two ago
The hiatus from 2008-2010 was due to one thing only. The band and label had a plan for the album paperwalls. Things were going according to plan, then the record label had a total restructure. Specifically the president of Capital records was removed. Then they were told all funding and tour support was over. They then were immediately dropped. I know members of this group personally, and they chased their dream only to have it ripped from them without anything.
Paper Walls and Lights and Sounds in hindsight are probably their two best albums beginning to end
great video bro i miss yellowcard i saw them live at slam dunk festival in hatfield park hertfordshire in 2016 for the first & only time they put on one hell of a show playing all their hits from their albums & they slayed their performance it's a shame that their success as a band was short lived rip yellowcard (1997-2017.)
keep the content coming bro well done.😀🤘
Thanks brother!! I also saw them a few years back and had their DVD back in the day. Fun band! Cool live performances
Just found your channel and I’m already hooked! I LOVED Yellowcard. Still do. Saw them 12 times live including their last and final 5 shows. Fell in love with them in 2001 and now 2021 still love them.
oh god you are so lucky, 12 times... maybe i'll never see them live :(
@@juscelino2253 THEY ARE GETTING BACK TOGETHER!!!!
@@kandikidzora IKR I didnt believe when my friend sent me about the riot fest. i'm happy for it, but sad because I dont have an US VISA, and the waiting time here to get one is about 200 days. but the next time i will be prepared lol
Just went to one of their concerts recently. They were opening for Third Eye Blind.
First time ever seeing them and I seriously thought they were headlining lol.
Anyways, they sounded great and put on a spectacular show however they didn’t play “Breathing” or “Way Away”
2 of their most popular songs.
Why would they not play either of those songs? I found that extremely strange.
Their best album in my opinion was "One for the kids" when Ben was still part of the band.
I really liked Ben, he was genuine during live performances and I am sure he was a big inspiration in my favorite Yellowcard album (not a commercial album at all).
Sad to hear they tried to kick him out and I hope he did well elsewhere.
I never liked the ego of the singer/guitarist.
Also their drummer was a beast!
I think Ben is doing well. Last I heard I think he had a CBD business and also has a soundstage/studio where bands can rehearse, film live streams etc
how cool you don't like the commercial album.. makes you legit.
@@davesmusicchannel3590 he owns a cannabis dispensary and is doing better than ever.
so glad this band has returned again
And in 2022 they returned and in 2023 they have a banger new single
During that 06-08 period, cd sales were down everywhere due to online downloading. Lots of bands like The Starting Line and New Found Glory had labels buy out each other and you didnt have the same support as you did before with your previous record label. It was definitely a messy time and some great albums never got any success. Then on top of that the 2008 recession.
The question is... Why did Ben Dobson leave Yellowcard, and why from the 1997 to 1999 era have they never played songs from Where We Stand and Missing Tossing?
ruclips.net/video/eTxkgge2RuA/видео.html This is the closest we have to any footage of that era
Singer and genre switch tend to mess with the band and their deal nowadays is completely different, so I guess they consider everything they released pre-1999 with Dobson and Todd a different band. Especially now that no one from the original lineup is left
And possibly unpopular opinion, at least for me, lights and sounds and lift a sail are my favorite albums
I think if you ask most yellowcard fans a lot say paper walls is their best album ( I think so as well) the album for whatever reason didn’t get that same push from the label..I think if they recorded PW in succession to OA things may have gone a lot differently
For the kids will always be my fav 🙌 Met my hubby back in 2002 and we would blast that album in the car on our first dates. We still do today ❤
They just got back together...
for a while, i hope it lasts at least to an album or some videos, or the next riot fest lol
I AM SO EXCITED!! I hope it’s not a one time only thing
@@kandikidzora ME TOO
@@juscelino2253 I'm from the future. It did.
If you like Ocean Avenue you owe it to yourself to check out When You're Through Thinking Say Yes
Now they are back baby!
"Way Away" was such a banger track on SSX 3!
Where will be Ben Dobson?
It's been years since they broke up. And I'm still bitter that they didn't tour in latinamerica. I wanted to rock Ocean Avenue one last time :C
(And Holly Wood Died is my favourite YC song of all things...dang)
Don't get mad at bands, be mad at your country men. They don't tour there because the venues don't pay them and everyone is shady. It's dangerous in some of those countries and they don't get paid half the time from sketchy promotors. It's not the bands fault, it's south America's fault.
Lights and Sounds, and Paper Walls were freaking amazing. I feel the albums after were lacking (i still love them, but the previous stuff was great)
Whatever happened to Ben Dobson ?
Paper Walls should've definitely came after Ocean Avenue.
Having trouble keeping my attention without some background music. Think it would really help your content.
I saw where Ryan said the reason they kept the lawsuit was due to recommendations from multiple professionals with PhD’s in music. He commented it on Facebook not long ago. kinda get it. Still a sucky situation
I see, that’s interesting as when I was at college/university I studied under people with PhD’s in composition and I can imagine that
Yes, video games and songs. Atv off-road fury 2 got me into that deadsy song “key to gramercy park”. Only song I’ll listen to by them..don’t care to dive. But I’d be whippin it in that game to that.
Also the reason they broke up is similar to what happened to them back in 2008
Why did the guitar player get kicked out?
I think personality / creative differences according to members of the band but listen to the podcast I pinned at the top of the comments. Ben goes into detail
There. He was doing takeover records during the recording of lights and sounds and I think the other members got pissed that he couldn’t 100% be present
@@davesmusicchannel3590 I believe drug abuse
I definitely remember dui’s either before or after being removed from the band
You gotta do another one now that they reunited for riot fest !
Lights and sounds and paper walls were amazing. I dont care who you are. I fell away around the next two albums, they were just not like the OG YC i loved so much
Loved yellowcards music till lights and sounds. I think when Ben left the music became too tame I could be wrong I wasn’t there all I can say is after Ben left I didn’t care for their music. It seems like many band members end up not getting along with Ryan. When musicians make a ton of money they should invest it into a business or something because the money doesn’t come in forever but when ur as young as these dudes were when they were making bank you don’t think like that. It’s gotta be hard to deal with being in such a popular band then over some years ur band is not at the top anymore not in the spotlight, not super relevant anymore that’s gotta be tough to deal with.
Alyssa Healy sent me here 🏏 🇦🇺
How? 😆
I'm so happy this video is outdated.
LP was forced out too. I don't know the details but I do know it for a fact.
Whaaat, really? Guy was insanely good! It is really hard to find online the reason why he left (or was kicked out). The fact that he went to play with former bandmate Ben and it apparently generated attrition with his former Yellowcard members is just weird.
@@pfaprado It certainly had nothing to do with his playing ability.
@@pfaprado That's not how that went down. He only formed "This Legend" with Ben Harper after being booted from YC.
i only like ocean ave, not a fan of anything they did after it, the underdog EP i like as well. but that's pretty much it
The whole Juice WRLD lawsuit is so absurd
You need a mic...
Hollywood died was not on the worst album 😡😡😡😡😡 one of the best songs on the best albums. Actually probably my favorite.
Lift a sail, i couldnt get into that album. It just isnt Yellowcard.
Paper Walls is Ocean Avenue 2.0. Southern Air is Ocean Avenue 3.0. Great albums. Both better than Ocean Avenue, in my opinion.
As a whole, I think Southern Air and WYYTSY are better than Ocean Avenue
@@ericleduc1771 WYTTSY has no filler. It's really consistent.
Talking about plagiarism, "Three Flights Up" was clearly a rip-off of Emilia's "Big big world".
Ryan Key denied the evidence, saying that no one could prove that, at that time, any member of YC was listening to Emilia. How dumb is that for an answer?! Peter Michael, on the other hand (the one who actually wrote the intro) said he never thought about that but that it was indeed true that the songs sounded alike.
