The Wenhaston Doom Painting - A Medieval Depiction of the Last Judgement

Join me as I pay a visit to St Peter''s church at Wenhaston in Suffolk, which has within it a scarce example of a panel painting dating from before the English Reformation. The panels, which were very nearly lost in 1895, are painted with a vivid depiction of a Doom, a representation of the Last Judgement of Christ - with the dead rising from their tombs and going to either heaven or hell. In this video I explore this imagery in some depth.

Rather ironic that nature had to step in and save this lovely painting by raining!

Oh. for joy, You have posted a full length video today. i enjoy them much more that the short “teasers” lately. The church of St Peter in its setting of the churchyard on a sunny day is a beautiful sight. I am amazed to hear it was built in the 15th Century. It looks brand new, and almost “modern. The colors and details on the Doom, are quite clear., even to the detail of the. fringe on St Peter’s robes. it was bad enough that pious works of art on the walls iin churches were covered up by whitewash, however, allowing some like this Doom to survive the reformers, but it always leaves me upset and depressed to be reminded that the Rood, with the Sacred image of the Crucified Lord, was thrown on the fire.🥀✝️

What a glorious deptiction of the "doom", and very fortunately discovered. I've said it previously, but the Reformation was not a friend to ecclesiastical artwork in so many cases. This is a very lucky find. As you've said, Allan, it is indicative of the lively colors in medieval churches. Thanks for another illustrative video!

Thank you so much for this video. I have really enjoyed your article on the painting in your magazine, but seeing it like this gives a real feel for the age of it, the signs of wear and the texture. I must say though, I'm not sure I would have my mind on the church service with this looming at me!

The painting's placement next to what seems to be a church cafe, trivializes its meaning. Let me have my latte while contemplating the Last Judgment, but then again trivialization of Christian belief is one of the hallmarks of the present CoE. Then there is the irony that the Reformation swept clean the English church of all "superstitious' images of Christ, the Virgin, the Saints the Martyrs so the space could be re-occupied by the funerary monuments of the saintly nobility while claiming this dignified God's word.

Only poor people go to hell. The wealthy are blessed by God who rewards them with gold, riches, a very comfortable life, and slaves or servants. At least this is what Americans believe now. The super rich also practice Calvinism f they don't follow Satan.
