I've had this watch for almost 2 years, it's a solid watch. The only drawback is the negative display is hard to read at times, but its not really a big deal to me, all you have to do is twist your wrist a little more, or less to make it more readable. lol
I've gotten many compliments on the look of the watch by males AND females. After nearly 2 years of use, nothing is damaged, broken, or cracked. The watch still functions as new, the quality is excellent.

This is a great watch. I have this watch and I'm extremely happy with it. The cons aren't as bad. I can read my display in any lighting condition. If you are in a dark place than use your backlight. I've see the black version with positive display and is not as interesting as this watch is.
Can't even remember when my rangeman was that clean. Love the rangeman.
I did get mine. I like everything about this G-Shock. I like the LCD. It makes the watch look stealth. This is a very cool G-Shock. It fit's great on the wrist. I made this my everyday watch. I can't wait to start mountain bike riding and rock climbing. BAD ASS G-Shock!!!!!

I have this watch. I like to think of it as my Stealth watch. No one else can easily see what is on the dial. I get more compliments on this watch than any other G I own. I think I have 12 at last count. Great watch!

The negative display looks so great on a youtube video. In real life it's so hard to see if you need glasses. In bright light it's ok, and need to turn it at different angles to see it. Also, that small window at the top, it's hard to read in that window especially with the lines going across it.
Yeah , negative displays are cool, but they are hard to read.
When I go out doors I put tape over the keeper so it doesn't get scratched or nicked. So far it stays on pretty well.
I have this model and yes it's hard to read. Thinking of getting the positive display also.
I already have the black Japan version of this one with the positive display but I don't really wear it out when I do outdoor activities. I was thinking of picking this green one up as it's on sale on a local shop for 220 and it's regular 349 in Canada. I love negative displays and it would be my everyday watch when fishing, biking & other activities I'm doing.

I wear the 6900 "military spec" (red on a negative display). I have to hold my wrist at an angle to read the numbers clearly, but, it's not an inconvenience. I've just ordered the Mudman military spec, as well. I've owned two Luminox watches and a Suunto. Neither watch could outlast the abuse I put my G-shocks through. G-shocks are as tough as a coffin nail.
Mike, great review, (excellent video quality BTW) I have the same model but your negative display is waaay more legible than mine, I can barely see the numbers and I am very frustrated about it, I wish Casio add more contrast to them! Thanks for sharing.

I have worn G Shock watches since the 80s, they are great watches, but what I don't like is none of the G Shock watches I have owned were designed to easily replace the batteries, like a Sunnto. And the positive displays are much easier to read, especially in low light conditions.
Hey Mike. I own the black one and this one in my collection. My soon to e wife wants one for her. I got her hook on G-Shocks. She wears my G-Shock 9300-1 and she wears our daughters G-Shock. Great video's and keep them 👍 coming. My collection is getting big and hers too.
I think the 9400 -B has the better negative display and the light really works well. If i am really concerned about watch band colors i have several i can change over. The rangeman 9400 is mud resistance. If you hate the neg display just buy the regular positive display and buy the olive green band.
I just bought this watch, and to be honest I think I should have gone positive display. The watch is really hard to read, I have to use the light all the time to see the small details. For those that asked, it's slightly darker in the flesh than in this video, it's closer to the colour shown at the end on the wrist, but just another shade or two darker again.

In certain angles you can read the display, but its terrible to read indoor.......In the light is beautiful to see the orange digits...

Pros: very rich functionality, like, probably, nowhere else. Cons: 1) bulky, 2) no 1 sec increments or autorepeat for countdown timer.

Carlos, I think you would be more happy with the positive display, the best negative display I have personally seen on a g-shock is that one of the GD-350.

Blackblast72, The negative display is pretty decent, not bad at all, but for me the the positive display is great, easy to read at the first glance. I think a tool watch is best with a easy to read positive display.

Great review , I bought the black one first , then had to have the green one , so I bought it too. I got a great deal on both at Macy's just before Christmas. They were 25% off $300.00 ($225.00 each). I love negative display watches , I have many. I think the reason for the negative display on the green watch not being easy to read in low light is that it is slightly orange in color. The white negative display watches are easier to read in low light. I have a orange color negative display analog/digital aviation watch that is also difficult to see in low light. There great outside in the sun.

The LCD is hard to read, but you can use the light to look at the time. I think the LCD is very cool and easy to read, if I can't see it I use the very cool back light.
Great video as usual - nice clear visuals and explanations to 'demo' a G shock by. Certainly positive displays are inherently easier to read given how LCDs work. I do find though that all of Casio's new X-Large models have very good negative displays - the larger digits provide more space to allow light in. I have a G8900 and have minimal problems reading it at all even in lower light conditions compared to positives.
I have one, and I love it. However, I have a problem to replace a battery CTL1616, which is expensive. I now realize nonrechargeable G-shock is better in a long term. CR1616 is easy to find and much cheaper.

Its a beautiful clock, I think is one of the cheapest g shock that comes with triple sensor and multiband 6. It was a nice review, thanks.
I have this model. It looks great but the readout is tiny and is overwhelmed by the giant case which blocks out the light. The whole effect is like trying to read fine print in a shadow. My display is positive. Which helps the problem a little bit, but not much.
Hey Mike. What's going on. I have to say about the keeper's. I talked to my jeweler and he said he can buff out the scuffs. That help's. I do use this as my everyday time piece. Great G-Shock. I do plan on getting the GW-9400-1. For now I'm in the NBZ. Which means No Buying Zone.
yeah the buckles tend to scratch very easy... just realized that when i saw this video and quickly looked at mine... boohoo.. its OK! i use it for long range shooting anyway. very good watch. reliable in case you don't feel like carrying around kestrels or other weather stations all day.
I agree with you about this watch, I have the same color, but I was frustrated with the back light, it's very hard to read and the metal piece on the back gets easily scratched. So I stopped wearing it.
Thanks for this review. I was really digging that green look of this watch and found an amazing price on it as well, but my main concern was that negative display and how readable it would be.
LOL I was welding in this watch. Just a few spots on glass from sparks. But they got polished after a few weeks.
And no, you don't have to be careful at all. THAT IS A TOUGH WATCH - if it doesn't have scratches - means you don't use it's fully potential.

Mike835 was saying something about the metal keeper. Most people aren't going to like what I'm going to say. I own the same watch and this is one of the best G-Shock's out there. Like any watch with wear an tear the keepers are going to get scuffed do to outdoor activities. This watch is built to handle everyday wear. The keepers will get beat up. The only thing that I can say is only wear the watch as a dress watch only. I do agree with Mike835. This is a BAD ASS G-Shock. Great job on the video.
Yeah, these have fancy metal keepers, they scratch easy, if you wear the watch like an outdoor watch, its inevitable.

Wish G-Shock made a black on black version of this (black band with negative display) without it being the expensive carbon fiber model. The OD green is nice but I'm sure this same model only in all black would sell.
Nah... positive display would have taken away the aesthetics of the beautiful olive green with negative display :-)... looks good as it is... only thing is the metal keepers though, would have liked a scratch free option... very nice review!

I bought the rangeman with the positive display...I had a gshock with a negative display and I HATED IT!!!!!! It annoyed my so bad and I ended up giving it away...

The metal keeper is so easy to polish. It's a G Shock! It's tough. Stop worrying about a scratch! All watches will get marks. Most can be removed with little effort.
Could you do a review of the rangeman with a zulu/NATO band, mixing the black and olive colored bands and watches respectively please? I'd like to get the watch, but I don't want to make a 300$ regret.
Kenton jaysandkays made a video about that and I found it helpful and I feel the same way about that kind of stuff
I like my GW-9400 (Olive green) It is a bit bulky but the negative display SUCKS!!!!, you can not see anything unless you are in a well lit area or you turn the ambient light on and you will have to click on every 3 seconds.

Hello, i just want to say something about the metal keeper and the Mudman. This is one of the reason why i changed my strap on the GW-A1000 with the Combi-bracelet strap on the same model(black, not the dark blue one). I was doing the same u`r talking about "sliding all day"...it`s kind of annoying! It`s a very expensive watch, and this is a failure for the watch! I`m thinking that even the GW-A1100 model don`t have the same stopper...The other reason that i change the strap, is the scratches all over the metal, made from, touching the bottom of a pool...i was pissed off, the watch was new (about a month)...
About the G-9300, the Mudman, yes it`s hard to press the buttons, but is one of the best and comfortable watch`s that i used to have, more comfortable even from the GW-A1000 with the combi bracelet, and the color is very nice and not tamped for the eye like the GW-9400 (my opinion).

My one gripe with this watch is the gap between the case back and the bottom edge of the sensor function pusher.

Thank you for the very nice review and the very nice shots of the watch. You cover lots of things that people may have questions about. One thing that I'd like to suggest is that you try to practice not say "ummm" "uhhhh" and other "word whiskers" because it makes it difficult to listen to what you're saying. You can look up exercises online to curb this behaviour. It would be a nice investment in yourself in you enjoy making videos.

Black or green? I really can't decide! If the green one had a silver light button I'd def go for that, but the black looks more metallic and cool. I've a red and black Mudman 9300 so it maybe makes sense to add a different colour to my collection. I'm also concerned that the green one will look bigger on the wrist.

The green is very cool, but honestly the black is very easy to read, makes a more useful tool watch, after all the Rangeman a function based watch.

Awesome video Mike like always very informative. I have been looking at this particular G-Shock for quite some time. I am an avid collector of CASIO's Pathfinder and Protrek line of ABC watches. This of course being Casio's first triple sensor G-Shock is really cool. I have been leaning more to the model you just reviewed but the only question I have is how clear is that negative display? I have the GX56-1ADR and if I wear the watch on a cloudy day, I always have to use the illumination feature on the watch to see the readout on its display.
I don't want to pay $300+ dollars on a watch which I can see the numbers. So if you can help me with that information I would highly appreciated. If the display is hard to read then I will purchase the positive display version of it. After all it will have the same module in it.

They do not sale a ladies version of this exact model but they sale the same colorway in ladies sizes.

You don't buy a G Shock to be careful with it. If you're a watch collector, just let it sit in your collection.

what to do?!? i just unboxed my brand new gw9400 and its greaaat. but ther is problem with sensor. brand new watch ;( altimeter show me -10m and im on +90m ... and preasure show 1015hPa and its actualy 1026hPa based on relayable measurment. is it normal or i hawe no luck?!

I could not help you on that, I do not own a Suunto core, sorry.
I don't own a Suunto Core, but I did touch it and feel it from a retailer. Personally, I don't like the Suunto Core Plastic feel. Its feel like cheap quality of plastic. Not as solid as Casio G-shock range. I do own a mudman and Protrek.
My advice for you. Go to a retailer. Touch and feel the suunto core before u decide which to go with.
Both suunto core and Casio Rangeman is a function based watch.
