  • This is my recommendations on how to read skincare ingredient lists!!

    • SILICONES IN BEAUTY PR...
    🍓 Drying Alcohols:
    • Alcohol in Skincare & ...
🍓 Ingredients I try to stay away from:
    1. ALUMINUM
Toxic metal that can have oestrogen-like effects in our systems, disrupting the healthy functioning of the endocrine system.
Usually found in almost every personal care product, especially antiperspirant deodorants.
    2. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)
Clear, colorless, viscous liquids with ammonia-like odors.
Usually found in products that foam like facial cleansers and soaps. They are also found in eye makeup , fragrances, hair products, and sunscreens.
    3. DMDM HYDANTOIN & UREA (Imidazolidinyl)
Preservatives that often release formaldehyde which may cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep.
Usually found in skincare products, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners, and detergents.
    4. MINERAL OIL
A petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging its pores. This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, therefore increasing likelihood of acne and other disorders.
Usually found in creams, lotions, ointments, and cosmetics.
    5. PARABENS (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)
Not always labeled, used as preservatives, and may contribute to hormone imbalance.
Usually found almost everywhere including skincare products such as moisturizers and deodorants.
    6. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)
Ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products.
Usually found in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.
    7. PHTHALATES
Chemicals used to increase flexibility and strength of plastics, and not often listed among the ingredients on products.
Usually found in cosmetics such as fragrance oils and listed under the term “fragrance".
    8. PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) & BUTYLENE GLYCOL
Gaseous hydrocarbons which in a liquid state act as “surfactant”. They penetrate the skin so quickly and can weaken the protein and cellular structure.
Usually used to make extracts from herbs.
    9. SILOXANES
Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone." Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. Suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane). Harmful to fish and other wildlife.
    10. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)
Detergent that makes products foam, lather, and bubble.
Usually found in 90% of personal-care products that foam!
    11. SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES
Anything that is synthetic or artificial should always raise a red flag. These are made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to.
Usually found in cosmetic and skincare products but also many household products such as candles, air fresheners, and scented trash bags.
    12. TRICLOSAN
A synthetic antibacterial agent that may disrupt thyroid function and can degrade into a form of dioxin, a class of chemicals linked to a broad range of toxicities including cancer.
Usually found in soaps, mouthwash, shaving cream, deodorants, toothpastes, etc.
    13. Talc

Can you imagine if companies had to list the percentages of EACH ingredient? Skincare industry exposed! I don’t even look at all the bogus claims anymore. I go right to the ingredient list 🤪 Thanks for this helpful info Elle!

Hey, Elle. This is a Very Important topic, that I'm so glad that you covered! Thanks.
You gave an "aside" to Triclosan, however I kinda wish you delved into the chemical more specifically for your subscribers, as many might just blow it off as not "too bad." I had learned that Triclosan has similar chemical structure of Agent Orange!😲 and thats Really scary & concerning. Not only that, but it has been proven now that chemical anti-bacterials are causing "super bug strains" to proliferate out of control! This is why a law went into effect to mandate manufacture's to have to start phasing them out of their products. Unfortunately, the FDA gave them a huge window to do so, at the expense of the consumers health (shocker!) 🙄 Adding Grapefruit Seed oil to dishwashing liquid, hand soap, & can add to the Make-up brush washing solution that you had told us about, too!
Could you possibly please address the chemical Butylene Glycol. It's in practically Everything! High end & low end alike. I always thought that Anything ending with the wording "Glycol" is Not good, yet many other's say "it's perfectly safe." What's your opinion about that?
Please also could you speak on the subject of Talc in cosmetics? It's in practically Everything too! We know about all the lawsuits where it has been legally found to cause Reproductive Cancers. Someone once commented back to me, when I made the statement about it being Toxic, "that Cosmetic Talc is completely different, than Regular Talc." I'd really love to hear what you have to say about that.

Watching yourself and other skincare "creators" has really helped myself with choosing great products, that has helped with my skin issues. I have also researched a lot myself through reputable websites. I also keep a list on my phone of the different names for certain ingredients. Thank you so much for helping us getting the best out of our products 😊😃👏🏻

Thank you! This was so helpful. I love the Paula's Choise Dictionary! I just had a sec to peek at the incidedecoder. Looks like it will also be very helpful. My dermatologist told me to use the app SkinSafe. On the same order it just doesn't have that many products. I have found using multiple resources is just so important! Stay safe and bubbly!

I have dry skin with some fine wrinkles and of course it's not as firm as I would like it to be. Currently I am using Dr Dennis Gross serum and vitamin C moisturizer as well as eye gel. It's just OK nothing really special. Thank you for your time and for all the great videos. Keep them coming. ❤️

I’ve been watching your videos for a few months, and I think with make up and skin care you give such great advice. I love your honesty! My question for you, is how do you feel about talc? I know there’s thoughts out there that avoiding that in make up is beneficial. What are your thoughts?

How do you determine if a sunscreen is mineral or chemical, what ingredient is what. Which is better for your skin? Thanks

    • @leneskov5184
      @leneskov5184 4 года назад

Most mineral sunscreen contains zinc oxid and/or titanium dioxide. Important that it is not only titanium dioxide because titanium dioxide does not protect against UVA. There are a lot of chemical sunscreens actives - so just check for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. If they are not in the sunscreen it is probably chemical.🙂

I work in the fragrance and flavors industry. I realize you are trying to help others and I appreciate that. However, please note that synthetic fragrances are NOT harmful especially when compared to natural fragrances. Every fragrance and flavor house that creates natural versions literally uses the same chemicals as synthetics. For instance, benzaldehyde which is a compound that smells like cherries and is found in cherries or almonds can be synthetically derived or can be naturally derived from cherries or other sources. Regardless of how it is derived, your body doesn't know the difference because it is the same compound. All your body sees at the end of the process is Benzaldehyde.
Natural or artificial it is the same. It's the dose that makes the poison not the compound. My coworker spilled 500g of Naturally derived benzaldehyde on her, turned red, and went to the hospital. Why? Because the dose made her turn red and have an allergic reaction. I have to taste/smell synthetic and naturally derived benzaldehyde everyday. But I am 100% okay because I consume it in 0.00001%. Which is how much is in your fragrances! Actually it's probably way lower! So at the end of the day, which is better? Artificial is soooo much better. Not only is it consistent but it is 200% better for the environment. Imagine how much cherries we have to crush for you to have "naturally derived" almond or cherry scented products. The resources and the land to manufacture natural ingredients should be illegal. But consumers hear natural and think it's better. No, it's not, companies can just charge more getting you to think so.
The reason we don't share our ingredients isn't because the ingredients are bad. It is because other competitors will copy them and resell the same fragrance or flavor for a lower price. Taking away all of our business in seconds. And you can't patent a formula. Yes, our ingredients can be long but it's not harmful ingredients. It's harder for them to copy since they don't know our ingredients. Our perfumers and flavorist are artists and having someone put it in a gc machine and take your art away is cruel but legal. Let me know if you have any questions.

Are you sure that companies are not required to list ingredients of less than 1%? I have always heard that companies dont have to list ingredients in order of percentage if they are less than 1% but they still have to be listed.
