This dog behaves EXACTLY like mine. She’s an utter angel around people, but the second another dog appears, it’s almost like she turns into a shark and I’ve got seconds to react before she tries to maul/kill. This is honest to god the most relieving thing I’ve ever seen since adopting her. I can’t tell you how much I needed both the information in this video and the situation. Thank you so much for posting this.

I respect the owners for doing all they can to correct the behaviors. I personally could not deal with a dog that would turn its teeth on me. Zero tolerance for that. Too dangerous to me!!!

In one of your other videos you had mentioned that people say you talk too much, and I feel like that's a horrible thing to say. You don't just jump into dog training and say look here's your dog do this. You analyze and explain in detail what the dog is doing and what the owner needs to do and how they need to work together to change the behavior. I've learned so much from watching your videos just in working with my own dogs and it's been incredibly helpful. So please keep up the good work!

I guess it depends on how the clients learn. For example, I fall asleep in lectures, but make it a lab class and I'm fully engaged.

    • @dolledupyoongi
      @dolledupyoongi 4 года назад +3

@@aaronjohnmaughan The problem is that in the dog training world, you don't always have the chance to learn purely by watching or doing. If I handed someone who had never seen a prong collar before a Herm Sprenger, I can't trust that they have any idea what to do with it. If they see someone else pop the leash on one, do they know why the handler does that or when?
I understand the complaint that "he talks too much" as sometimes it drags on, but the way he explains things leaves little room for misunderstanding what he is saying. I'd rather know more than less. I learn more by reading and experiencing things but he said it well enough for me to understand 🙂

I am fostering a German Shepard mix. She was found in the desert. She didn't know any commands and I taught her sit, paw, and down with the clicker very easily. I have 3 other dogs. Have never been aggressive with them. Not even my Yorkie who is deeply annoyed with her. However, when we're on a leash outside she turns into Cujo at the sight of other dogs. No dogs? She's great, jogs with me. Is terrified of cars. Any who, I'm determined to correct it or she'll never stand a chance at getting adopted. She has deep anxiety issues that I've been able to work with. I'm sure its the breed and being alone for over 4 months. She looks very intimidating and it's embarrassing in public when she goes buzerk. I just ordered an e collar. This video was great! Ive been watching a lot of your videos on e collar usage. This one in particular hit home. Thx!!

Wow Tom I've been working with dogs for a long time and you're very no-nonsense, logical and rational when you explain this to people. I have a dog who is reactive and its a puppy-behavior that I am trying to break before he's too old. I recognize this video is a bit older but its very helpful. I work at a daycare and I deeply understand dog behavior but I have never had to use an e-collar. My dog is the third to my pack and he is certainly reactive. It's something I have not dealt with, with my breed specifically. I have been using the e collar more and more and your videos help me know that what I'm doing is the right path for him.

This E collar has auto retractable and will not cause irritation to my dog's neck. Also I can record my voice to the system, I can use my voice recording to train my dog, say goodbye to the traditional beep sound for good. So far it seems really effective. All I do is pressing the voice recording button to correct my dogs behavior. We hardly have to use the shock setting.

Great video. We are at that point with our dog, whose about 3 times bigger than this dog in the vid (Anatolian Shepard mix). He’s aggressive towards most dogs and hard to walk because of it. I’ve even had to do P.T. on my shoulder from his puppy pulling on the leash phase. Trainers have said he seems generally anxious (doesn’t like most other dogs and men). He’s been in a prong collar but it’s barely helping now. Like he can’t stop himself from lunging.
We will try an e-collar as our last attempt. He’s super calm with us at home. Not aggressive to us.

My dog is very much like Doodle. A previous trainer said that when Rumple wants to go over to an animal/person/car/bike/whatever object it is, and then when I try to correct him, he turns around and jumps/tries to bite me. Their response was to teach my dog that I am the "alpha" through practices at home, and to just body block while he is muzzled on walks. Needless to say, two years later, it didn't work. In fact, I think it is worse than when I had first started: he does it more frequently and has grown quite a bit since we first met the trainer.

I would love to see a follow up with this dog a little while later presented with new dogs and people to see how much hes generalising and proofing stuff. This was very interesting and normally I would never advocate for using aversives with with a dog who's growling so I feel very torn. On the one hand I've always tried to avoid punishing out the warning system because a growl is the dog making an effort to communicate he wants space without using aggression. On the other hand, the dog's issue is so severe and it sounds like the owners are about to give up trying to train him so if you can flood and just teach him complete avoidance of stuff hes to be reactive to I can understand how That could save the dog's life even though it's not ideal and then overtime could bounce back from that flooding/ punishment to choose to avoid reactivity but not in a super aversive way. Anyways, this was really interesting.

Awesome video Thomas! Do you happen to have any footage of when you first started working with him before you had made a break through? If so, I’d love to see it. This dog reminds me of my Cloud with the reactivity. Very helpful and informative. Cloud often chooses to walk away or remove herself and avoid the situation.... other times, she is full throttle mode

the growl is a warning though, so by correcting the growl are you not getting rid of the warning? Isn't this dangerous because he learns to skip the warning and go straight to the attack?

The thing is , he gets rid of the warning and makes the dog into a avoiding behavior, so the warning gets replaced with avoiding

@@williamrodriguez4350 Pair stim with something good like a treat. Start as low as possible and do short quick sessions. Do that for about a week and then transition to a ball, stim on and then stim off when you throw the ball. You both are most likely starting too high on the stim but if not, this is a good place to start.

Would you classify this aggression as control conflict aggression?? Basically when a dog needs to control the situation and does not like being handled , depending on his mood at the time, and hates being restrained at all times?
I have a puppy who is definitely showing this control conflict aggrssion but I can't find any videos to help me. My research has shown this is one of most misunderstood types of aggression and a lot of people do relate it to dominance

Doodle reminds me of a poodle my dad adopted and we know what caused the dogs nasty behavior. It was the woman that raised him. She was mean, arbitrarily and would hit and kick him for no reason and at the same time she never disciplined his nasty behavior. You couldn't touch him without the risk of getting bit. Those poor owners, I can understand their frustration. I wish we could have known this. Great video!

Hi Tom This post was supposed to take on the video of the e collar and the aggressive dog. I have almost exactly the same type dog who growls or tries to bite me when he doesn’t like me to correct him. I have tried the prong but he is too reactive. My biggest problem is that he eats anything and everything! If I try to take whatever it is out of his mouth he will growl and then bite me. Do you think the vibrate on the e collar will help me to get him to leave or release whatever he has that is bad for him. This is a real safety concern for him so he doesn’t need an operation due to ingesting something. Thanks

My dog exactly, a 2nd-hand rescue. She goes into total prey drive toward anything that moves. Barking, lunging, snarling. Cars, dogs, bikes, sliding glass doors. It's like she can't check herself, she enters a different state of mind. The prong collar makes her yelp but she keeps on driving forward with hostility. Same with the top level on the e-collar. She either totally ignores the stim, or redirects her aggression towards ME. Even without such distractions, she has no respect for my leadership. If I have treats, she can perform about 20 different commands, no hesitation (she's very smart, and learns quickly). But no treats, and I'm invisible to her. Not sure anything is going to work at this point, and it's not safe to keep a dog in this condition. Best alternative may be to put her down.

Yes dogs have their own working level and will heel, sit etc on low levels in non exciting environments with distractions you might have to go higher. I have a leash reactive dog and he will ignore at lower levels if hes close to another dog so he has to go higher.

"if a dog was afraid of me I would never do this" I have a 5 yo male neutered Doberman I rescued a year ago and have been working with daily (e collar training, private lessons, etc) he is still reactive to other dogs on leash on walks but can go to group class w 15 other dogs and zero issues. In a doggy daycare situation at the training facility he stays on the outside wall, too scared to socialize. He isn't like this dog in your video w/ people but will give a low growl or a lip raise to people when he's scared. I am wondering how to correct it w/ the e collar. I have been telling him no and giving him a pop w prong collar or correction w/ e collar. I am wondering about what you said he about not doing this to a scared dog.
