I was born and raised in Tokyo. Your research is amazing. A couple of things I do want to add as tips are …. 1. No refills on soft drinks at a restaurant unless you go to family restaurant and add a “drink bar” option. I remember taking my American husband to Ginza and went to this fancy café in summer time. He was so thirsty he took this very fancy skinny glass of iced tea and downed before I could finish my sentence, “there is no refills!”😂 so he had to ask for more water into this teeny tiny water glass. This poor waitress kept on coming back for more water so we ended up, asking her to leave a picture on the table which was about the size of a large glass in the U.S. so we ended up asking to refill the pitcher😂 2. Typically there is no assigned waitress for your table so you can grab any waiter and waitress to ask whatever you need. 3. In many public bathrooms, there is no device to dry your hands after you wash your hands, Japanese are trained to carry a bag of tissue papers and a hand towel ever since we are in a kindergarten. I remember that the teacher will give you warning for not having those items at school. You might want to go to ¥100 stores like Daiso or Cando to buy a hand towel or two. I promise it will come handy. I hope everyone who will visit my hometown, will enjoy his /her stay. ❤❤❤
I’m retired Air Force. Booked 4 nights at New Sanno Hotel for about $90 per night. Can’t wait. Thanks for all the advice. Getting 5 day East Rail pass.
Hands down the best video I’ve found on traveling to Tokyo. Thank you so much for this, I have been planning a 2 week trip to Japan for a little while now and I learned so much from this! I especially like that you film on site, super engaging and helpful to see what you’re referring to ❤
These videos are amazing man. Honestly, the best and most informative I've come across. I'm planning a month long Japan trip in April. Love that you gave the facts without any extra unnecessary stuff.
Hey Korie, I am also planning a 3-4 week Trip to Japan. I wanted to ask you if you are planning to do some sort of roundtrip and if yes how you were going to travel around Japan? The 21 day JR-Pass is a bit pricey and not sufficient for 4 weeks, so i just wanted to know how you were going to handle transportation? Thank you in advance!
So happy to have come across this video series! I'm heading to Tokyo late January 2023 and wanted to brush up on some tips for navigating the city better. Very well-thought-out video and helpful to say the least. I'll now be spending the next few days thumbing through the rest of your Tokyo catalog!
This is one of the most informative, user friendly, and accessible travel videos I've seen. Enormously helpful for someone that feels like information about Tokyo is like drinking water from a fire hydrant. Thank you.
Much of Japan now charges for plastic shopping bags, so it might be a good idea to tuck a couple of reusable cloth bags into a pocket or handbag if you are shopping. Also, the restaurant situation has greatly improved smoking-wise as most places are non-smoking now. Izakayas still have smoking as you mentioned. Since the Olympics, there is a lot more English signage in places, even in rural places like where I live.
Thank you for your concise videos and tips on Japan. I will be adding this to a Japan Travel playlist to go over when I go to Japan in May of 2023. Very helpful!
I just got back from the city last weekend, loved every minute, only 7 nights 8 days, hoping to come back next year or the following year. I quickly learned about the trains quickly, learn from the rookie mistakes, I did have fun going off plan, Ill hopefully visit , watch videos like this. I stayed in a budget hotel Hotel Listel Shinjuku 15mins walk from the station, brilliant base
Hi Chris. Great info for the first timer and well season traveler to Japan. People here are very excited about Japan opening up to regular tourist. Take care and gave a wonderful weekend.
Thank you so very much for all of your content. You've prepared me for places I've visited and this one is so informative and rather entertaining. Thank so very much!
The video might have a few years old but the advices are spot on any time , specially now that Japan is reopening, the suica, pasmo or any of the metro cards are so useful if you don’t want to carry 1 pound of coins inside your bag, coins are really easy and fast to stack , if you keep forgetting them and keep paying notes 😂
I just did the Starbucks thing today…and I couldn’t find a trash can so I put it in a plastic bag in my backpack but there was some left over Sakura latte in it and it spilled all over my bag. It’s only day 2 of being here! That being said, it’s amazing!!
Thank You so much for this amazing video for a 1st ever international traveler. I will be flying into Japan in Summer 2024 so yes im excited to be visiting the country as a first time traveler to this country. This video really gave me a heads up....THANK YOU!!!!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all your wonderful tips and help videos for Tokyo. It help me out so much and do appreciate it all. I mainly stayed in Tokyo but took a couple of day trips out to Mount Fuji and Kamakura. Had a wonderful time, enjoyed every minute of it and don't know if and when I will ever be back but just wanted to thank you. Tips I learned for you I passed them on to my family and friends in my IG stories. I really appreciate it. And I will let people know if they go to Japan to watch your videos and what to expect. Thank you once again.
Every time I see Tokyo it reminds me of one of my favorite movies: Lost in Translation and it’s famous line “For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.” Nice whiskey, btw, and it pares beautifully with an A5 wagyu steak. Tokyo is a truly dizzying metropolis. Great video, Chris.
I was born and raised in Osaka/Kagoshima, met my hubby at college n US, now live in California. I have avoided Tokyo all my life, except transit purposes. Now my daughter wants to go Tokyo so I learned a lot from you. Lol thx! True, generally speaking, most Japanese people know English well, but often when they hear English their brain goes to sort of “cannot hear” mode. So, bring a note pad and spell them out, or speak English not just slow but choppy like a word at time so they can spell them out in their heads. That was very helpful when I started hearing/speaking English. My two cents for you!
Heading over for the first time next week - glad you mentioned CityMapper as I love that app (all Londoners use it) and it has Toyko in beta but looks like it will do the job!
Hi Chris...I really appreciate the energy that you expend in producing the live street shots of Japan. I'm sure many people don't notice the subtle harassment and ridicule that I see you endure in filming these segments (just to give us a more entertaining backdrop). Haha...if those rude individuals in the background only knew the extent of your monetary gratification for doing what you love. Anyway, keep up the excellent work...I learn a lot from your RUclips videos.
Thanks kkawto! Yeah.. I think the background is always fun to watch -- the best are when I shoot videos with a 360 camera... to see how people look behind me when they think they are out of the shot
Thanks again Chris for all your VERY helpful videos on Japan. We met briefly a week or two ago at SHIBUYA Crossing. I am from Canada. Too bad the Robot Restaurant is still closed! Again, excellent work, thanks.
Chris, one video "idea" I have for you relates to live MUSIC. Small clubs with working musicians. Local musicians! Any genre. I hit the excellent network of JAZZ clubs throughout Tokyo, Sapporo, Hiroshima, etc. Very vibrant jazz scene in Japan. Better than the USA!! Really. Or various types of music rock, pop etc. Club Alfie in Tokyo is a good start for experimental music.
Shinjuku Station is a nightmare to navigate. It's bigger than any shopping mall. There are 12 different lines from 5 different companies running through it comprising of 36 separate platforms. And there are 200 different etrances and exits. Add to that the chaos of over 3.5 million people using it every single day. Even with Google maps telling me what line and platform I needed to be on, I got hopelessly lost in there.
@YellowProductions That being said, the subway system itself runs amazingly. Clean, fast, and efficient. But yeah, Shinjuku station is a completely different animal.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah. The no refills thing is rough! And I'm definitely one of those massive water drinkers too
and carry a bag to carry your own rubbish
