Felt like you guys were in my living room giving a personal lesson. Guitar players always do the best interviews because they know what questions to ask. Great job Brett! Love Rob's melodic approach to a song.
Rob’s slide on “Like a Rock” while touring with Bob Seger was so on the money live to the studio version by Rick Vito give me and the audience in every video I’ve seen chills to the bone. That song is two masterpiece’s in one, the vocal and great lyrical story and the slide just ramped into the stratosphere.
The best part about this video is Rob just finished recording guitar parts for the artists I play for and he used some of the parts I wrote for the song. That makes me feel good!
@@BrettPapa Nice lesson - thank you! I am currently working on your blues soloing bundle minor & major pentatonic where explain the importance of chord tones / target notes - which I understand, but i find it really hard to memorize all those little chord inversions (CAGED-Shapes) all over the neck because - logically - they are on different spots for each chord. It is such a whole lot of information to keep in mind during soloing over a backing track with for example 4 different chords... and then one should connect the chord shapes with the pentatonic scale at the same time...very complex... So my question is: how should I start to memorize the shapes of each chord? I would think learning the notes on the guitar neck first? For me only this is very hard to learn... Could you give me/us a hint on that? Thx in advance!
This is a gold mine. I loved the slow walk through each part. Made myself a verse/chorus loop like Papa Brett played and worked through some things Rob did. Funnnnnn.
Rob did all the electric guitars on my current E.P called This Heart’s For Dreamers. I was totally blown away how he could come up with these amazingly melodic parts after only hearing it once. Sometimes only reading off the chart! Just amazing!! 🎸🔥
As a Kiwi, I can say Brett has the humility worthy of a New Zealander and would be welcome here anytime. If you have ever played open mic gigs, or jammed live on a song you have never played before, you know how tough it is to learn in front of an audience, let alone switch between guitarist, host, interviewer, and technician. Great job mate!
This is great! Seeing the process of song creation is very interesting, thanks Mr. Stache🤙🏼 Rob McNelley is so talented and down to earth. You guys never fail to inspire.
The channel is growing and growing and growing. I thank GOD ya’ll weren’t around that crazy explosion, when I first learned of it I prayed hard for all of ya’ll to be alright. Rob is so cool and so talented and deep into making great music. I would love to hear him just cut lose and jam for a while. Thank ya’ll for making the video. I am so relieved ya’ll are safe. Happy New Year. Hoping 2021 is going to be a great and exciting year. Play On Jimi !!! 👍🎸🙏✌️😎
Thanks for checking in! All is well I was in Florida when it happened. I plan to have more of Rob soon. He is a man in demand so sometimes it takes a while for his schedule to open up.
Great video .. thanks for this ... at about 9:58 ... Rob says .. 'stick that 6th in there .. at 15:43 .. .Rob says ... 'decided to start on the 3rd of the chord' .. . I think those were the two most important points in the video for me ... Rob obviously knows the fretboard ... and knows his intervals ... and can access them almost without thinking ... I think that is where the task of learning the guitar has the best payback ... meaning practicing with intent focussed on those two areas ... I am working on it .. I guess we all are .. all the best .. Phil
Yeah good idea of thing to focus on. Rob is a master of the fretboard. You should see it when he really cuts loose! Crazy to see, he is typically very restrained in his approach.
Just watched the first minute of this video, and holy fuck I’m blown away lol. That king of stuff makes me really want to pick up my guitar, hopefully I can tap into some inspiration to want to keep playing regularly again.
Brett! Once again this third interview with Rob was just wonderful! Instructive and so entertaining! Rob and your humility is so real and refreshing! I’ve commented to you before but I can’t forget to tell you you are able to capture the beauty and nuances of each piece played through your method of recording to RUclips! Thanks so much!✌️❤️
This is a great video. It's fascinating to see someone with Rob's insight and talents give such valuable insight into how to think about guitar parts and soloing. Well done guys! Thanks!!
I love your rhythm playing Brett -you're strum through it always reminds me strum through all my strings get a full rhythm sound!! Rob's Gibson 355 is cool, but i love the Varitone circuit, when it gets used. I'm sure he doesn't really want that sound though. Gibson 345 with Varitone is my all time favorite guitar for some reason, but an older Epiphone Les Paul with 50s wiring, etc is what i play. I've got a newer Chinese Squier Telecaster that i dig too.
Hey Brett great video so far. I am still going through it. I wanted to say that there is an extremely important aspect to what Rod plays at 22:00 that I do not know is mentioned. BUT if you listen, he does not start on the downbeat. There is a small pause and it is great. Pat Pattison from Berklee talks about something similar in lyrics writing. He refers to this as unstable. Interesting stuff.
This might be the best collaboration video yet. Keep it coming! From a request perspective, it would be interesting to better understand what a typical day(s) in the life of a session player is from gear setup up through heading home. How long does a record take to complete for a guy like Rob when he’s brought on to play guitar? How long is Rob’s time commitment in the grand scheme of a full record? What is Rob’s mindset on gear selection for a country record verses a blues driven album verses a pop album, etc. How much extra gear does he bring as backup? Time Pierce I know used to bring every piece of gear humanly possible like when he did Iris by Goo Goo Dolls (maybe he still does!). From a guitar playing perspective I would love to see more of that slide playing!
Hey Cole, Thanks for checking this out...so, a typical day for a session player....That's a lot to cover! I'll hit some bullet points here...Sessions are done in 3 hour blocks. (10-1, 2-5, & 6-9 PM.) so, you could be working for 3 hours or on up to 9 hours in a single day. And they could be 3 different sessions at 3 different studios for 3 different artists in a single day. Typically you would work 2 sessions from 10 am to 5 pm, for one artist. That's the most typical day....but scheduling never fails to get interesting. So, as far as time commitment is concerned, it's all over the place. As far as gear goes, I take pretty much the same thing to just about every session. (marshall head, Fender Bassman head, Matchless head, Silvertone head, pedal board, about 12 different guitars) That way, I have a way to get any sound that they or i might think of. Everything goes thru a 2x12 cab, unless I'm using a combo amp, which i will bring a couple of old Fender amps if it's at a studio where I know it would be great to have. Sometimes, space and ease of setup is a factor at certain studios...Anyway, from there it's just hearing the song and listening to whatever direction the producer or artist might have creatively about the project, and then factoring that in to coming up with your sound or part..... Once you start playing, then it's just a matter of discussing the sound with the engineer and making whatever changes you each need to make to get it right for the track, and then perform! at the end of a long day, I scrub it all by listening to something on the drive home that is completely different than what I worked on all day. I end up usually listening to some old blues or jazz or stones or dylan...usually something that existed before the knowledge of anything modern....That's what helps me scrub all of these songs out of my head and get me ready for home life and fresh start for the next day...
@@rmcnelley Thank you for your time in responding and your breakdown was very helpful. Due to social media, I’ve been able to learn so much more of the session world and learn more about the world class talent within. From a playing perspective, I mentioned seeing some slide guitar and that’s essentially all because that is a world I haven’t dove into yet and while that would be great to see, this video is really what I’m interested in. Your playing is top notch (crazy how precise you play...shows you play A LOT) and even without specific technique lessons, I learned a lot even from this video, but it is your thought process that is most intriguing. After watching this video, if you only take away one thing, let it be "get your head out of your ass, and listen to the Beatles". Everything you need to know about songwriting, and creating memorable lines is in their music. Best of all time, ever, end of story, case closed.
Pretty much lol!
@@BrettPapa AND....you are correct Brett, his tones are ridiculously good! I would have loved to be right along side you listening to those tones in person. It's like magic!
Hahahaha ..those subtitles in the beginning
6:11 Where is the chart, or have I missed it somewhere?
No unfortunately that chart was no where to be found once it was time to edit the video haha! Sorry.
Do you think you’ll do a lesson on Jimi Hendrix, Like A Rolling Stone.
No one teaches Jimi like you do.
Thanks in advance !!!
Thank ya sir! Lots of Hendrix stuff coming soon!
@@BrettPapa You’re the best.
Thank you.
BTW, I have your Hendrix master class set and your pentatonic set, great lessons. Though we’ve never physically met, I’m a student of yours.
Anybody know what strings and picks Rob uses?
He uses 10's and 11's depending on the guitars. I think he also uses different picks depending on want he is doing.
After years of being the steadiest guitar guy on RUclips, with just his HSS Nash s-style and and t-style, Papa’s playing all kinds of new guitars.
Haha that guitar is Rob's although I wish it was mine!!! Incredible guitar!!
@@BrettPapa A man has to do what a man has to do. The more the merrier, at least until you get up to around 200 or more, then the wife might say you have a problem. LOL 😂 Happy New Year.
Can someone tell me the chords used into the intro
No “Welcome welcome welcome”
No deal!😤
And where’s the trusty “Welcome Cup”? ☕️😢
Here I am trying to remedy my musical indiscretions & you go & take away the cup...
Okay just watched it, Turns out it’s all about what I’m actually watching not just the cup!😉🤣

Im a 335 guy, that is the biggest 335 i ever saw...
Haha we just aren't that tall lol
@@BrettPapa Is that what it is Brett? ya cant tell from a video, but that thing looked huge! haha! Hes a beast though! You too, i think your just a little humble, i never see you really play too much when you have a guest on, its good, you always allow them to rock on your show...great channel! But as a player myself, it must be tough to even pull the trigger, these guys you have on are the best in the world lol Do you ever catch yourself, almost going for it, then say NAHHHHH BAD IDEA? HAHA BC THATS WHAT ID BE DOING...Even though i know you can, still must be, hard to take the lead with these guys.....These guys are Mad Hatters hahahahhahaha
