  • On January 5, 1937, 14-year-old Judy Garland made her first appearance on the popular CBS Radio show “Jack Oakie’s College” hosted by the film star Jack Oakie. Her introduction to the program was “Pennies From Heaven” sung as her “application” for a scholarship to Oakie’s “college.” Judy is presented as a “little country girl from the hills” who, after singing, gives Oakie some help with his books, claiming to have been a champion bookkeeper in “Doake’s County.” The presentation of Judy as a “little country girl from the hills” is in keeping with her recent feature film debut in “Pigskin Parade” in which she plays a similar character named Sairy Dodd. Learn more about "Pigskin Parade" at The Judy Room's Filmography Pages about the film here: www.thejudyroom.com/pigskinpar...
Later in this broadcast, Judy sang an outtake from the film, “Hold That Bulldog,” which you can listen to here: • Judy Garland - Hold Th... .
This is the only known recording of Judy Garland singing “Pennies From Heaven.” She certainly gives it her all!
This previously unreleased recording is presented here thanks to the generosity of collector John Newton. Thank you, John!

Just totally extraordinary!!! I LOVE it when Judy leaps into that second RED HOT JAZZ chorus!! She literally GROWLS out: "I said Pennies!!! I SAID NICKELS!! I SAID QUARTERS!! " and she even says "Yeah man!!" right at the end... An INCREDIBLE find!! Thank you SO MUCH Mr. John Newton -- you are making SOOOOOOOO many Garland Fans amazingly happy :)

Judy you’re the tops! I would have appreciated you for the treasure you were. A living doll was coined for you.
Obviously, studio executives saw your potential, you are perhaps the most iconic cinematic American treasure of all time, I know you are to me.🌹💕

Yeah, man is right! What a personality Judy had. At only 14 years old. As David said below, yes, thank you so much, Mr Newton.

Most singers show remarkable early talent. This is great. Others whose early work is fantastic are Crosby, Sinatra, Presley, Streisand, Aretha Franklin and K.D. Lang.

Yes, but how many of them have ever showed that much earlier at the age of barely 14? She was singing like this at the age of seven and eight! 🤔😳🧐🙄🤗❤️

Is the other boy in the Andy Hardy stills Freddie Bartholomew?

I think that's a still from Thoroughbreds Don't Cry with Ronald Sinclair (aka Ra Hould).

It's not Freddie B., but I don't know who it is exactly. It's from a movie, "Thoroughbreds Don't Cry."

I don’t think so, but Freddie Bartholomew was in Listen, Darling with Judy Garland.
