It looks like every major company was in trouble in the 90’s
It was the rise of Korean products in the 1990’s that disrupted the dominance of Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, etc. The Koreans are still kicking ass on many fronts.
Philips dominated my childhood and youth. Now they are virtually invisible. I was wondering why.
R👄O💋S💕I💓E
Self destructive products.
They stole my mother, my brother in Kinshasa, Zaire,... A German national named Klaus Dieter weitz that was working in Lagos, Nigeria for a dutch company named Philips was not even known by the German government in lagos, Nigeria,... Untill today they still try to dominate us in Eindhoven.
Invisible? Huh
Basically lighting > consumer electronics > healthcare systems.
16:30 Korean wave.
22:15 Company split.
25:44 "it looks like a mess because it's actually used", sounds like my a/v setup in my apt.!
"... even to Indonesia." Well, it was a Dutch colony, at the time. How people forget, with the passage of time.
Hhhmmm
The Radio Helps Indonesian hear independence ideas from all over the archipelago, prompting the fire to gain independence from the Dutch
@@falkenvir One thing that the colonists gave a lot of former colonies was a common enemy to unite against and a common language to do so with.
Not forget...just simple ignorance
Forget?
Philips started the digital Revolution - RESPECT
You keep showing the tv business in the beginning but failed to mention what became of it after the company's major split into lighting and healthcare.
According to wikipedia the electronics division got spun off into a separate joint venture company called tp vision during the naughties and still makes TVs under the Philip's name under license
The Major Philips TV Plant has been close down... The plant was in France, an hour away West from Paris. I grew up there and did an internship during their mid's 2000's crisis. Production went to Hungary, testing remained in France for some times but I guess it's now in Singapour or Eindhoven. I remember the Philips employee stating that Philips was killing the CRT technology for fancy, bad quality, flat panel... at this time it was actually true. Flat panel were weak, bad color specs etc... Until the end of the 2000's.
In 2020, I bought 2 Philips LED 'smart' TV sizes 65 and 50 inches. They are priced lower than those made by Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, and LG. As soon I bought them, I found out Philips TVs that I bought are anything but smart. They are very slow, barely able to use apps (like Netflix), resolutions are lower than advertised. I later need to buy an LG TV to satisfy display my PS5 resolution. Buying Philips products was one of my biggest regret ever !! Definitely the first and last Philips I will ever buy
Philips tv's suck, their HUE and headphones are good tho
3:04 Edison didn't invent light bulb. He improved previous designs and made first practical light bulb for mass production.
zpetar #teslarules
Yes, he made it practical and " home consumer-friendly" , you could say, Thank you.
So the wright brothers didn't invent the airplane since it wans't consumer friendly?
Dima, you got it all wrong.
You mean the telegraph office thief?
The quality of Philips appliances went downhill once they started manufacturing in China. The plastic is very thin. They do not last. I had a Philips hairdryer made in the Netherlands in the 1960s. It only stopped working properly a month ago.
pffffft. If you had something, or was being simply alive back in the 1960s...
Ugh, you stink of prejudice.
Good old days were always that good and full of nostalgia eh?
@@nehcooahnait7827 Keep learning english ignoramus!
I wish Philip's electronics would've gone to South Africa and have regional offices and manufacturing plants down there and possibly.....open up a professional soccer or AKA a football team and call it PSV Johnansberg..just like the PSV Eindhoven
Philips Radio did not have daily programs. The programs from 1928 to 1934 were only a couple a times a week in Dutch, English, Spanish and French.
from this video, i not convinced they will make it in future
@@Nussbaum981 they can earn much much more in medical stuff.
Philips is there ever since I was a Child (born in the late 70s).. come to think of it.. I never owned a single Philips product.. other than a light bulb or florescent light.
I think my Dad had a Philips Digital Blood Pressure Meter.
I remember when Phillips was partnered with Magnavox in the late ‘90s. Almost everyone had a Phillips Magnavox portable CD 💿 player. Now I rarely ever even see Phillips electronics for sale. Maybe they’ve put America as a lower priority in the past 10 years.
gedaman They didn’t partnered with Magnavox - They bought the company
Magnavox?? Never heart of that. Philips took over more then 100 companies.
@@kjaersdalen I didn’t know that. I just remember that ubiquitous Philips Magnavox portable CD 💿 player everywhere a little over 20 years ago.
Magavox was everywhere in the 90’s.
I love how the thumbnail is the Philips air fryer 😂
Light bulbs. They still make the best light bulbs, certainly for automotive applications.
Osram is better.
@@leonwoolf8984 You have to back that up Leon otherwise that comment is invalid. Philips have won multiple awards, particularly for their street legal applications. Osram are quite inconsistent in performance, product line by product line, though both are of high quality.
I always trust Philips.
White Vision and particularly Extreme Vision are notable lines.
The advertisement is from Bangladesh.... In bangladesh a big market of Philips bulb.. We value quality....
Still have old Phillips TV in my room and they held up till today.
Philips was on the forefront of consumer digital audio technology and innovation (eg. CD, S/PDIF, etc), competing with major Japanese companies like Sony, Mitsubishi and Toshiba in that arena.
In fact Phillips collaborated with Sony in making/marketing of CDs and S/P DIF.
@@lesliejackson5225 It's called the Sony/Philips Digital Interface for a reason. :)
At 13:45, is that aircraft flying towards what looks like the World Trade Center?
Bingo! I was looking for someone to notice... Also fun fact: Phillips family is related to Marx family... Go check it out...
If you think about it, it's perhaps not so out of character to be in healthcare. Light bulbs became essential as well. Consumer electronics are perhaps the deviation.
Still, I don't like that you can still buy a hifi system or a TV with the name "Philips" on it, while it's not really a Philips. But hey, I'm Dutch, and in the nineties I was a Philips geek if there ever was one. It does make me sad to think that, not only is all of that gone, but also, things like DCC did not make it when they had a chance. So much brainpower but it just didn't appeal to people. Still, listen to an MP3 and you are listening to a codec that was built upon the DCC technology (PASC). There is some heritage.
If you think about it, a ton of huge brands these days have been licensed by the OG corporation to other, sometimes much smaller corporations. Westinghouse is basically just a “license brand” these days, yet, e.g., their ceiling fans are still everywhere in countries like the Philippines. GE as a company still exists but their bulbs are now sold by a company called Savant who just has a license to the GE name. It’s inevitable for many very old corporations.
@16:55 its Samsung and LG, not Samsung and Sony.......
I could remember one of their slogans.......Phillips...we invented the CD
In 2006 I got a Phillips radio and it still works. (PS.: I am studying not at home and don’t know the model.)
Have they done one on Nokia yet?
Their consumer products are horrible! Everything is a rebranded version of the cheapest possible OEM. HELL TO THE NO.
Health monitoring/care....how about disease prevention??
They used to make 2 way radios, only one problem with the commercial ones, they were physically to big. Unlike the their CB radios, which sere the right size.
back to 480p in 2018...
Not only Philips but just about all electronics companies in the world except Korean and Chinese companies(government protected) are failing these days( there maybe an end of Sony in our lifetime).
Daniel Pickering
Still that's a hollow shell of the technological powerhouse that are the origins of the company. On a personal level I am so sorry to see Sony struggling they way they are.
Apple is doing really well actually
Philips are still the worlds biggest manufacturer of the product that the company was founded on - light. They have so many parents that they will survive. The company are now a global leader when it comes to health technology
Downfall because of MBAs. its so simple.
25:43 Truer words could not be spoken. There's usually always a rush to clean up the lab before a visit from another company etc
these docs, the themes seem to be companies either spread themselves too thin or corrupt...
Philips would be the first brand i woul buy back in Brazil, today in the US it would be the last...
Why? They still yhe number 1. In quality

The pity with this series is, that about 20 minutes into each episode it puts focus on the usual marketing buzz and droning about "values", "visions" and "team empowerment". So it's less documentary and more of a (paid?) corporate advertisement.
First was Philips, GE etc then Sony, Panasonic etc came & now LG, Samsung, Apple took over. It tells you history repeat itself, if you stop innovation & not Change with time.
Magnets Travel Just because companies like Philips and GE No longer are as big as they were in the consumer electronics market doesn’t mean that they aren’t big anymore. Good example is IBM you don’t see IBM computers in their consumer market anymore but I assure you that the company is still alive and kicking. The same goes for Philips and have a global leader when it comes to health technology. And they are still and by far the biggest manufacturer of light and light related products in the world.
That was a close Philishave.
I like their shavers.
I love my Philips air fryer.
Skip the comments. To sum them up: Let's try to sound smart by rewriting history to question the validity of what we already know to be true regarding those who conceived an idea in whatever primitive or otherwise state and those who actually conceived of it better and brought it to market by making it practical, accessible and affordable.
In Bangladesh Samsung and LG got the market by paying the sales man some tip and sales commission.... I thing in India also.... European Company don't like these activity.....
Expand too fast and didn't solidify their base
Thumbs down to Philips light bulbs...
Joseph Swan, an Englishman invented the light bulb actually!
No
This emtire series of programs is a great idea executed badlyu. lurching from significant figure to significant occurence and missing out on a cohesive and cogent explanation. They become glib and broad and rely too much on music and editing the light and magic without really drilling down to why, how, when and who, turning points etc, etc. Redemption and recovery is one of the most important stories to tell of the human condition and they stuff up nearly every episode.
Edison did NOT invent the incandescent lightbulb.

i went to einhoven last year to visit my cousin and saw big arse phillips factory now closed down and give way to the trend around the world, high rise apartments for chinese investment. only a portion of it was kept for museum. i dont know, if you guy had it, but i remembered my dad used to have philips phone, and it is way way tougher than 3310. and Phillips appliances, man, worth the money, still today, but doesnt have that feeling anymore.
Poor documentary. Apart from examples given below: all of sudden Cor Boonstra is introduced as the big reorganiser in 1996. Not a word about the great - in more sense than one - Jan Timmer, a career company-man, who made Philips and the world very much aware of Philips' problems and ACTUALLY began the ruthless process of seriously and painfully reorganising the company, (in)famously announcing the firing of nearly 20% of its workforce of 250,000 worldwide during a press conference. The preparation for this so-called Operation Centurion is an interesting case-study of managementpractice in itself.
CD-i was the cause for the biggest losses of Philips.
Or as it is known in Japan Fi-ripps
Philips a razor company!
Philips and a lot of brands had to change also Japan brands , in United States brands force to go the market i dont agree with all the information in this video .PHILIPS is and will be on top of other brands.
i always thought that philips was japanese. i was wrong.
Bernard Magdoza Philips are the technological pride of Europe. The company started the digital revolution and that deserves respect.
omg, they are doomed by digital bs.
So how much did Philips pay the S'porean govt for this 45 minute-long ad?
But I would say that Phillips is still largely a shadow of its former self. They do not have anywhere near the presence they once had in electronics and appliances. The only Phillips stuff I see these days are light bulbs 💡
Because they changed stratagy. They still number one in world medical stuff. And there us the big money
@@waso778 well.....I didn't mean to imply they were not making money. And yes they have indeed done very well with their refocus on medical equipment. BBC, RT, TeleSur, ABC(Australian). CBC(Canadian), Mediacorp, Al Jazeera, NHK(not state owned but by subscription protected by the government)
What's making the corporate media worse than the state owned?
At its core, it's entertainment(rating based).
Accuracy of the report doen't matter as long as the rating stays high.
False report sells when it comforts the viewers and the readers.
The reality isn't often the most popular things in the world.

CRT much better display than any lcd
That's bullshit. CRT = blurry, no straight angles, bad colours, eye hurting flickering. If you think CRT is better you have never sat infront of an LCD produced after 2010.
When I swtiched from a high end CRT to a mid range LCD at about 2009, the picture was slightly worse but the energy savings and smaller size was valuable. Modern IPS displays are much above CRTs in everything except response time.
FutureChaosTV, sounds like you only use low and midrange CRTs. High end Hitachi CRTs did not have any of those problems.
BS
High end led TV good with hd videos but I personally feel that good CRT gives that element of clarity and sharpness
