Boyzone were a successful 90s Irish boyband. I think hes trying to say that this song is about the real dark points people can experience in relationships whereas the 'lighter patches' would be the bubblegum pop 'i love you so much blah blah blah' stuff you'd hear in songs by Boyzone and bands like that.
He's literally, straightforwardedly saying that. Why would you ever feel the need to explain what he's "trying to say".

Sounds like the uncontrollable nature of the cycle of relationships with a narcissist. They can't stop themselves even when they know it's happening again.
