    I’ve watched a number of videos on the subject, but this one stands out -- laconic, to the point, with visual support and examples clearly explained. The last with the text is particularly helpful! Hope my students will like it as much.
    Happy to hit on your channel and wish all the best with this hard but useful work!

      I'm glad it was helpful. Moving from general English to academic English is always a challenge, even if you have a good foundation. It is a very different kind of English. Anyway best of luck with your studies. Keep at it!

    The lack of personal pronouns in writing depends highly on the discipline. There are ways to be academic and formal and use 'I'. I personally think that avoiding first person is pretentious and is not a professional practice when you need to state your opinion apart from a strict analysis, and both things are present in academic writing.

    • @Eapfoundation
      @Eapfoundation  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for this comment. Yes I quite agree. Personal pronoun use tends to be more accepted and common in humanities, less favoured in the sciences. On the related page on the website I mentioned that "Although rules are never a good idea for any form of study (because there are always exceptions), they are usually a good place to begin." So yes, there are exceptions. However, the rules are a useful guide when students are just starting on their journey of academic writing, before they have learned the nuances of different styles in different disciplines. The link to the original page on the website is here:

      @@Eapfoundation Wow, thank you for your reply! And for the video itself! Despite my comment, I find it incredibly helpful and well comprised... I will present this video to a class tomorrow! (I hope they don't see this comment OMG). Also, I thought about the rules and the exceptions as well, because, I think, one is better at identifying where to be more flexible only by knowing the "strict" style before...

      I haven't made a video about those. There's a lot of information on the web about them. Get in touch if you still need help (contact details on the website). I'm more knowledgeable about APA that MLA though, since I haven't had to use MLA that much.

      Hi Lynne
      Yes, all the RUclips videos on the channel are available on Youku, specifically for the Chinese audience. The channel on Youku is here:
      i.youku.com/eapfoundation
      This specific video is available on Youku via this URL:
      v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDUxOTk4MDQyNA==.html
      You can also see a full list of videos, and their RUclips and Youku links, here:
      www.eapfoundation.com/news/social/#yt
      I guess I should update the RUclips descriptions to include the Youku link.

      Academic writing is more formally written as compared to prose and have a more 'rigid' (at least I think so )that has to be followed .Follow Sheldon's videos and I am sure you will understand better.😊

    Please when you explain something do it more slowly

    • @Eapfoundation
      @Eapfoundation  3 года назад +2

      Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll consider this in future. I do try to speak more slowly than normal, but at the same time, naturally. It's important for learners to hear natural speech. In the classroom I might speak a little slower, and would definitely repeat and paraphrase a lot more. But the classroom, being a live setting where learners can only listen once, is very different from a RUclips video, since learners who are struggling can use the captions or rewatch or pause or scroll back a bit to check and so on.
