I can see the runtime bogging down rewatches but for the first watch I quiet enjoyed it. Plus, Lillards character doing the Ghostface knife wipe warmed my demented little heart.

This first movie should have just been the game saving most of the lore for the sequels. Five Nights at Freddy's is all about jump scares, and this movie barely had any. There is enough lore that they could do at least a trilogy of movies, so they should have just taken their time with the story

I watched the movie without knowing the game's lore, just having seen some RUclipsrs play it. For me, it was super boring and long. After finishing I went to read about the game's lore and I found it interesting, but the execution in the movie was poorly done.

I'll be honest fnaf needed to be a TV show. Like a 6 episode run. Have the first episode be on the missing brother or even a prequel to what the movie was. And you have the last 5 episodes be the 5 nights. Idk if that makes sense. This movie when you know the lore this movie screws it all up and considering Matt Pat spent years and hours on lore videos again, just to have them screw it all up.

I took my 12 year old son, and thought it was a mess, but I really really *really* think this is because Cawthon is really a totally lost person when it comes to what to do with something he created (and maybe as person, yes, that's a dig at his politics)... He's just messed around with everything so much that nothing makes sense. As someone who just hears things from my kid, I can say that B plot is really and truly the A plot. But it's like three times as messy in the lore too. There were so many things I wanted to dig in on to convince my kid that it was actually kinda awful... but I am trying to be a good day and bite my tongue and let him love it lol... I think it balances out since his favorite movie has been Interstellar since he was 5 and totally likes things like Beau is Afraid. So I will like my bad movies and he can like his!

I don't play the games but I am a big fan of the lore of the games. I had to do research into the games for the job I had at the time. The story from the games is pretty directionless with a lot of stuff left intentionally vague because I don't think the creator expected it to become a huge franchise. However, it could be adapted into either a good R rated horror movie or a child friendly intro horror movie. The movie however fails to really reach either. I believe they're already committed to a trilogy so hopefully they can correct course.

I absolutely hated the dialogue. Biggest pet peeve of movies is when a character is asking a straightforward question, and the other character just doesn’t answer or in this case spews dramatic bs instead of doing a big reveal. Like. Jfc this movie just felt like ‘Mike’ was extremely confused and was talking to brick walls.

Five Nights At Freddy's has a fairly complex and mysterious lore that they could've pulled from and made for an interesting movie but they instead wasted it on a lot of weird family drama shit. Willy's Wonderland was a better FNAF movie than the actual FNAF movie.

I hope the huge success in the box office and popularity of the movie gives Blumhouse the confidence to take more risk with the sequel, hopefully making it r rated. Even me, a huge fnaf fan growing up who knew so much of the lore was fairly disappointed. That probably had to do with the fact that I watch more than 10 movies a year unlike most of the audience going out to see it though.

Don't get me wrong, I love kids and I'm happy to see family movies in theatre. But I was loathing seeing this film after hearing the theater etiquette was particularly awful for this film's crowd. So I watched it at an 18+ theater lol. The audience's disdain for the film was palpable man, with a few disappointed "What...?"s and *sighs* were sprinkled in.
Kind of fun, I guess, but too many contrivances and plot holes to care. Not my cup of tea overall. I honestly should've watched it in a theater of screaming kids, would've been more memorable 🤷‍♂️

  • @shutupdave
    @shutupdave Год назад +4

As a fan of the game and a bigger fan of film, I was disappointed by what we got. I knew that the movie was aiming for the PG-13 crowd and that already made me worried, especially since the more recent games have been watered down to appeal to children.
One of the more interesting things about the first game is how little you actually know. The lore is in the background and you have to piece everything together on your own which made the games prime for theory videos and trying to understand the story became a hobby. The horrors of the child murders were always hidden from us so we have to imagine based on the details we’re given which almost makes them scarier than just showing it to us.
There was also the oppressive feeling of how corporate the restaurant was. The player is told right away that if they did die, the company would get rid of the evidence and made you sign a waiver that released them of all responsibility. The restaurant is still functioning but is clearly past it’s prime. Even if the player knows the animatronics are trying to kill them, they keep going back night after night because that’s their job and at the end they’re given a lousy minimum wage check for their troubles.
The movie missed all of that and instead tried to appeal to the younger fans, which makes sense on a marketing level but as an older fan I expected at least some semblance of the atmosphere of the first game. The missing sibling plot is pretty much lifted from the novel but the novel does a much better job tying it to the restaurant (I haven’t read the sequels tho). I can see what they tried to do with the screenplay but it falls flat, none of the storylines were particularly engaging. It was just too cheesy (pun intended) for my liking and I wish we got a more mature version that kept the early games’ atmosphere and tone.
I blame most of this on Blumhouse honestly, their last few projects have been really bad as they’ve tried sticking to a mainstream brand of horror that is becoming less and less entertaining. Sorry for the long read.

Prior to seeing this movie, I've been aware of the games, but I never cared to play them for some reason, but having seen this movie over the weekend at home, I can agree with your opinion on this one because I feel like it was kinda slow pased for too long and the best part with Matthew Lillard as William Afton felt too short tbh, that should have been longer, it just feels like the boring parts of the movie were longer, but the most exciting parts were shorter, Five Nights At Freddy's 2023 is fine, but not exciting or perfect, but thats from me viewing as a film instead of a gamer

I only watched a short video on the basic lore of the games before checking out the movie (because I was curious) and I had a fun time with it! Was it amazing? No, but it also wasn't bad for me personally. I see where all of the criticism is coming from. Even as a fan of the franchise, I agree the film was very messy, and mismatched the lore to try to make it fit, but that's how films work. As the for the film, I found most of your thoughts to align with, and if a lot more thought put into the plot, it probably could've a great film that no only the fans, but everyone else could've enjoyed. I think the film could've also benefitted from an R-Rating, and the side plots were more setbacks than pleasant acommpaniment.
    *Spoliers*
I agree that if they leaned more into the custody side plot and removed the lost brother one that the film would've been much better, especially given how much screen time the dream sequences took up. The movie doesn't do much in terms of scare, and even though the animatronics intially had an intimidating feel to them, the sister becoming friends with them really seemed to diminish that. Probably had to do withat PG-13 rating.
Overall, I don't hate the film, and there are certain things I like, but due to certain issues with the plot, it fell flat.

I'll stick with Willy's Wonderland even though the shaky cam sucks and I hate it it still delivers on what it is and knows what it's doing. Even though WW is a complete rip-off concept of FNAF, it at least doesn't take itself seriously and has fun with the concept plus there's a lot of gore and delivers on what it's suppose to be. It has problems like shaky cam which turns me off I can't stand movies horror/action doing shaky cam to where I can't see wtf is going on.
Also, not a fan of Hunger Games too much shaky cam. I think Battle Royale is miles superior even though it's just 1 book and 1 movie. It did what THG couldn't for me and made me care for the characters. Plus BR came first. THG's is just a watered down copy.
What would be interesting is to get your take on THG vs BR and FNAF vs WW in comparison vids to see what you thought of each.
Also, the only horror video games and lore I care about are the first 3 Silent Hill games. Not a fan of Resident Evil I like survival horror not action horror.

As a fan of the franchise since the beginning I loved the movie. Yeah it has its problems but I overall liked the movie. I fell off the franchise a couple years back though so I’m not fully up to what everyone else is, but to me coming back to the franchise when the most recent game came out, even though I didn’t get into it, I learned a lot about the fan base and the way it had become more tailored for kids. I feel like if kids weren’t so into the franchise and the movie had come out in its hay day then it would’ve been rated R because this is a franchise filled with child murder, mutilations, and robots wearing the skin of people. This franchise was dark, disturbing, and gross in a very cool way cause there were mini games in the style of old video games that gave the lore and it was cool and dark. l just hope the next movie takes more risks and is better written, cause I did love the movie but I do understand why some people don’t like the movie.

Yeah, this is a fan movie because the creator of fnaf was heavily involved in the making of the movie. So i completely understand why people who are not into or know about fnaf will not like it. The creator put a lot of Easter eggs in the background of the movie for the fans of fnaf, similar to how he does it in his games. I'm pretty the company got a deal to make 2 more, and Scott (the creator) usually like to make his story connect. So I'm pretty sure this movie was the stepping stones for what is to come. With all that been said, good review.

Hey Kylie, huge fan! I comment a lot and have enjoyed your content for years. The comments dehumanizing “gamers” and generalizing them as if they were beneath you wasn’t necessary and really disheartening. The gaming community is wonderful because it’s a mix of all different kinds of people from all over the world, coming together to enjoy common interest. I hope next time you can use different and more kind rhetoric because I can’t be the only person you rubbed the wrong way.

Saw five nights of Freddy in the theaters people who are fans of the games seem to really dug this one. myself I fall in line like yourself never play the games knew nothing about the plot except from watching the behind the scenes clips on how the movie was gonna be made. Walking into it blind feeling a bit optimistic. The film was all over the place. The overall look of the animatronics was fantastic. Mathew Lillard performance as always he kills it good to see him here gave a breath of fresh air. The subplots, storyline, character portrayals; as well as the main protagonist was so subpar. Didn't live up to the hype.

I can see non-fans of the games not enjoying the movie and that is okay. As a fan I enjoyed it and had fun looking for Easter eggs which kept it from feeling like a 2 hour movie. Yeah, the dream stuff dragged on a bit though the interactions with the ghost children was cool. The movie wasn't perfect by any means, but it was a love letter to the fans.
The movie is like the books, it takes place in a similar universe as the games. The 8/16-bit intro summed up the important part of the game lore that related to the movie. Stu tried to live an honest life starting anew life as the owner of a Chuck E Cheese style resteruant. Children being the worst and driving him back to a life of murder.

I forgot to comment this but this movies fatal flaw is advertising it as a killer animatronic movie because its not really that although i will say this for the second movie that should change because we refer to them as the toy animatronics they are glossy and clean looking. And they are not POSSESSED by children and they are actual Killers so hopefully if you do decide to see fnaf 2 you will enjoy it they stated this movie was never meant for the general audience and they weren't trying to expand the audience until the sequels and this was only a movie for the fans considering it took 9 years for this to come out.*biting them in the ass now* So i would hope you give fnaf 2 a chance.

I've not played any of the games, but I was always under the impression that the audience for them was way younger, like 12-13. And so when I look at this movie through that lens as sort of a 'my first horror movie' type thing, I thought the level of violence was appropriately low and honestly if I was still a kid I bet I would have really dug this movie. I agree with you as an adult that it wasn't particularly good, but I can definitely see the value in looking at this movie as essentially a kids movie.

You gotta also understand that the fnaf movie was in development hell originally it was gonna come out i believe 2015 or something like that but it had so many scripts that were scrapped in being made, idk if u know this youtuber but markiplier or just mark was gonna be in this movie but his role was gonna be at the start with the security guard running away from something but it was cut because he has a movie being made called iron lung, but yes it is proven that the main 4 characters of the franchise freddy foxy bonnie and chica are all practical no cgi was needed except for the cupcake i think. And my only complaint was it should've been rated R because the lore of this movie is really fucked up and disturbing but they did it for the lil kids, i liked it but it should've had more gore and mathew lillard should've had more scenes, hopefully he'll have more scenes in the next 2 movies

Always love these unscripted videos. And while I do play video games, I definitely don't relate to that really toxic side of "gamers." While I haven't seen it, from what I heard this movie is more so for the fans than anything. I actually haven't played the games but I have read up on the lore and I do think it's interesting but it's also kind of confusing. So it's understandable for general audiences to be confused coming in without knowing really anything. Which is sort of similar to the MCU and DC movies. Even though I haven't read much of the comics, I do love the stories and characters. But movies from both sides and really live action movies and shows in general don't seem to excite me anymore. The only one I can think that amazed me in recent years is The Batman. It's why I usually stick to animation since most animated stuff has always been far more enjoyable to me. Even though you didn't really like this, I do appreciate the review. I hope the comments don't get bombarded by fans saying and calling you the most horrible and disgusting things for this. Honestly the extremely toxic behavior of obsessed fans in really any fandom is why I just have a hard time being a part of any community. Hopefully things are tame but I won't be surprised if it gets heated. But thanks as always Kylie! Also I really love the purple lighting in this
