The skid plate kit deletes the chin spoiler, so the Colorado approach angle should increase with that option and you can get 1" larger off-road tires for $495 as an option on the Colorado which is also going to help all the off-road numbers. Toyota is trying to be the new Jeep with outrageous pricing. The best bang for your buck mid size off-roader is the ZR2 with leather and Bose for under $51K

The GM 2.7 produces more torque at 170 0 than the peak output of the Toyota at the same RPM. The GM engine is much more powerful overall.
Agreed, and for off-roading, I'd like that max TQ at a lower RPM as well.

I just bought a 2024 colorado trail boss. $40,999. The best truck on the market for the money. The power in that 2.7 liter turbo charged engine is awesome!
These are all great comments and i think i learn more from them because there are so many opinions and comparison shopping ideas it actually helps with the confusion as to what is more important to an individual

I pull a 20ft Bullet bass boat with a 225hp outboard with my Colorado Trail Boss total weight around 3k, I got mine calibrated to 430# torque, it pulls my boat better than my 02 Silverado with 5.3 does!
These new turbo engines are legit.
They’re so damn close in terms of form and function that it’s going to be a matter of aesthetics. Colorado will lean aggression.
The Taco has a more urban modern deal to it.
Win/win imo. They’re both fantastic builds.
I see Toyota learned their lesson on torque. The 3.5 torque peaked at a sportscar like 4700 RPMs, which is ridiculous for a truck.
The way GM and Toyota have put together their trims and option packages has made it harder to compare these two. The Trailboss is a more basic interior, even fully optioned, than the mid grade TRD OR. A more apt comparison would be the GMC Canyon AT4 vs the TRD OR mid grade. The AT4 gets the offroad upgrades of the trailboss, interior of the Z71, and the HO tune. In this case the canyon comes in within $2k of the TRD but has a more upscale looking interior. The real value option from GM is the Colorado ZR2 with the tech package and convenience package for right around $51k. At that price, you get an interior comparable to the TRD premium and offroad equipment more comparable to a TRD pro.
As for the power comparison, the Tacoma hits 317ftlbs peak torque at 1700 rpm and holds that steady all the way to 3500rpm before dying off. The Colorado is at 350ftlbs by 1700rpm building to 430ft lbs at 3000rpm and staying above 300ft lbs until 5200rpm. Based on the torque curve of the Tacoma, it looks like Toyota detuned the iForce to give more separation between it and the iForce max.
Better comparison would be the Canyon AT4 ImO. Much more similar trim/money than one of the cheapest models in the Trail boss. Canyon has the lift as well as more premium interior and lED lights. Much closer trims
Good comparison video. I wish toyota had more options on the SR5 such as rear locker and rubber floors with vinyl seats.
So here’s the Break down this is every option package available for 2023 GM twins minus any accessories. (Added Bed lighting to the GMs) Tacoma includes max premium packages. Toyota slotted themselves in between the two. Obviously pricing will increase some once 2024 GM pricing is released. I’d suspect a few hundred only.

Fingers crossed - I would hope that the Colorado has lower dealer fees added on.
I had to go to a couple dealers but was able to buy a Colorado at sticker (who’d have thought paying full price for a midsize truck would feel like a win). All the convenience packages, safety, tech, towing and a remote start. With taxes, tags, and the bs dealer processing fee I was out the door right at $45k. A lot of money but for what you get it was the best deal going.
My local Toyota dealer sounds like they’re trying to get around $2,500 over sticker (plus the other bullshit dealer fees) on even basic ‘24 tacos.
I don't think your comparison between a TRD off road and a Trail boss is equal. Should have compared Z71 to TRD off road would have been more equal.

I am going to get a Colorado Trail Boss in a few years but the Tacoma Off road has a better off road suspension, is it worth the $7K more for the suspension? Probably not
I think it's better overall in addition to just suspension, (interior quality, options, etc.). The Trail Boss is a very stripped down off-roader. Which is great. But you can get the Off-road the same way if you don't throw a bunch of options at it. The Tacoma Off-Road optioned out is more like the Z71 with better suspension.
I like your approach to comparing these vehicles, using datapoints that actually matter for off roading and such, so many get hung up on engine only, I’d say the TRD is closer to a ZR2 though with lockers front and back, I know personally that would be my apples to apples comparison when buying one next year, I am patiently waiting though for a review of that hybrid engine, which could in theory blow away the other 4 cylinders in the segment

@@robertchapman4488 actually hes not. The torque numbers are best in class for the Tacoma, and the only thing close is the Ranger Raptor (higher numbers because its a v6). Also its a Toyota so im sure the reliability and durability is also best in class.
What percentage of newly purchased trucks really go off road more than a farm lane or a driveway to a cabin? Probably a very low percentage, but they sell very well. Nice video, thanks.
I am really interested to see the hybrid MPG. Will the efficiency be significant or a big nothing burger like the Tundra? How many miles until you recoup the cost?
Probably a nothing burger for mpg. But it's supposed to be for more torque and HP. Might reduce strain on the engine as well
Let’s face it, the main reason people buy Tacoma was because of cost, cheap to buy and cheap to own. With this new one it’d be interesting to see how the sale goes after the initial craving is gone. Probably make it depreciate much more than historical numbers

@@2011buddylee But you cannot get it. Only 4 allocation per dealership for the entire year---on top of ADM.
When you put the skid package on the Trail boss it removes the air dam. The stats for approach angle doest reflect that being removed.
I still think if you wanted to compare like equipped trucks, you should have compared the Trailboss to the Sport 4wd and the Off road to the Z71. Then the pricing is much closer, like less than $1500. I understand they are opposites for suspension reasons but that is much closer when you look at the big picture of interior "quality" and options available. And honestly, how different is the suspension on a Z71? Overall height is .3" less and ground clearance less than an 1" shorter.
Question. Which one has more actual buttons, or flip switches to control lights, 4x4, etc vs having to go to the screen to turn things on?

You can get a Colorado Zr2 for $50,000 or the Tacoma off-road loaded for more than that. I’m in the market for one of these two. I’d prefer the Trailhunter but it’s probably going to be out of my price range and still no front locker.

Where it's built means so little anymore. Latest index of "most American made" has the four Tesla models on top and the closest a US brand got was 16th with the Lincoln Corsair. The Colorado was 33rd. The Tundra was 12th. Gladiator and Ram were 27/28. This counts where it was assembled as well as the percentage of US/CAN parts used. Pretty sad when the F150 is 66 and Silverado was 96.
I was thinking z71 was a better comparison to the trd off-road myself. Trail boss might be more in line with the sport.
It appears one must to spend minimum 8k upgrade to get fake leather on Tacoma. That is brutal.
Oh I were to get one of these, I would choose the Tacoma TRD off-road with the hybrid motor. I personally wouldn't get the pro as I would just end up upgrading it anyways
Interesting because in Europe hunters and park rangers drive small 4x4s. The lighter the better.
I really went back and forth on the two trucks. Both are excellent options in midsize in my opinion. I bought the 2024 Colorado Trail Boss because i felt like i had more clearance when sitting inside it at 6’2. I felt a little cramped in the Tacoma. Also, i love the Colorado’s look! It looks so aggressive and i like my vehicles to look like me. I feel the Colorado fit me more than the Taco. It’s really about personal preference with the specs in my opinion and i think both will be able to take on the same things. What i can say is that the Taco has a lot more products to add on at this point because the Colorado is fairly new in concept. So, if that’s something you need now, go with the Tacoma. I’m willing to wait for the add on third party accessories because i will have this truck for the long haul. It’s not my daily driver and i will only put about 5k a year or so on this truck so it works for me.

Here in Canada, the Colorado zr2 starts at 57k, the trd off road is supposed to start at 56k so it's a no brainer at least for off road capability ZR2 all day.
It is weird how the pricing is so much different here and not even proportionate to what it is for you guys.
I don't think the Trail Boss was ever meant to compare directly to the trd off road, the trail boss is an entry level off road trim (thus the much cheaper price). Also the Trail Boss comes with the silly airdam...thus the much worse approach angle, this can be fixed easily.
For what it's worth I'm sure the TRD off road is more capable than the Trail Boss simply because of the MTS/Crawl Control and selectable (as opposed to auto) locker
The Trail Boss reminds me of the last/current gen Tacoma "trail" edition, basic interior, halogen lights, no MTS/Crawl Control but still had a locker and a small lift .
I'm guessing the pricing (at least up here) of the ZR2 Bison will compare directly to the trd pro....but we will see , nothing announced yet.
What happens if there is problem with the display. No headlights?

One glaring difference is coil springs in the back of the Taco. You've driven both. Is it a big difference?
Good point on the coil springs. I think if you drove them back to back you’d notice a difference going over pot holes, but I don’t think it is a deal breaker either way.
I don't think it's a deal breaker but it is probably more expensive. They've been using leaf springs forever in pickups and coils are just working their way in.@@Pickuptrucktalk

A ZR2 packaged out is 54k or 53 withoutsunroof. This should compete against the TRD Pro but a speced taco off road is 55-57 because we know distributors add toyo gaurd and paint protection. Then if ford will ever produce the ranger raptor you are looking at a twin turbo 6 and lockers for 58k
What sells more below the Tacoma? Ranger or GM twins?
Chevy Colorado. The 2023 Q3 sales results were Tacoma, Colorado, Gladiator, Ridgeline, Frontier, Canyon and Ranger.
Just looking at the ZR2 starting price and the limited starting price it is going to be obvious the TRD Pro is going to cost more than the ZR2. Probably a lot more. It will probably compete in price to the AEV edition of the ZR2 price wise.
Everything you didn't like on the Chevy at the 20 min mark should be solved with the Canyon. I'm curious on the comparison between the Taco and the Canyon. I think the Canyon will still be a much better deal as far as $$$...
Can’t wait until the new Ford Ranger comes out into production. Especially with the 2.7L TT that ford gonna be sending it through the trails

Chevy should have dropped the base tune and simplified production.
Post pandemic it does seem Toyota is pricing their vehicles a bit more than some of the competition. I wonder if that’s intentional knowing it’s a bit above market value to either increase or maintain profits despite lower production or if it’s to try and curb or reduce dealer markups (less likely but still might have that effect due to the already higher pricing).

@@2011buddylee I've had a Tacoma....for 6 months. Most uncomfortable thing I've ever driven. Lasts forever, but I couldn't drive it for 3 hours.
@2011buddylee Seating position is what kills me in the Tacoma. Feels like you're sitting on the floor. Haven't driven the Colorado, but sat in one and the position (for me) was way better. Similar to the 4 Silverados I've had. Toyota claims they've corrected that for 24, but my '20 TRD OR was unbearable. Even my wife bitched about it. To each his own.
That Tacoma is closer to 10k more where I live!

The Toyota tax is alive and well....my price comparisons seem to show more truck for the money with the Chevy. I've driven a Tacoma for 30 years. I'm disappointed with Toyota's pricing....seems really high compared with both Chevy and Ford.
For this to be apples to apples based on price should have compared the taco to the GMC Canyon AT4.
I'm not surprised by the price difference. Like you said, gotta pay the toyota tax. If someone wants a toyota they will pay that tax, if someone is price buyer, they may not pay it and go with colorado / canyon
The Toyota price is really high. That puts this truck in the full size truck price range. Mind you, the highly optioned full size truck prices are set apart from the fully optioned mid size trucks.
Is the Tacoma really more expensive when it lasts twice as long.
Like the colorado for its torque and horspower plus the payload but just worried about reliability. If the new tacoma proves to be reliable even with less power. To me will be worth it in the longrun.
Isn't the TRD Off-road supposed to be available with an optional factory lift and 33" wheel and tire combo? Can anyone confirm that and if so, when will those options be available? Thanks!
They had a lift kit for the prior gen, but I’m not seeing one for the new one and only one wheel and tire combo. It could be a thing for the new gen, but not yet.

The options you had selected didn’t include the front sway bar disconnect. With TFL getting a TRD why don’t you wait and buy a Trail Hunter? I think that’s what a lot of people are going to be clicking on to see what it’s about & you should draw in some new viewers for the Overlanding crowd. I know it doesn’t come out for a couple more months but i think the hybrid long term will get WAY more clicks. Just my opinion.

doesn't the TRD off road has a 2.5 in lift compare to the non off road? I thought it was 2 or 2.5 for the TRD OFF ROAD and 3 or 3.5 for the TRD PRO
Colorado has those lifts. Tacoma doesn’t.

Pricing for the ZR2 Colorado is more comparable
I think the Z71 will sell more than the trail boss solely for the upgrade led headlights. Chevy was wrong to omit them from the trail boss. All tacomas have standard leds, all Rangers I think and all canyons I think. Come on chevy people would’ve paid gladly.
AT4 Canyon is probably a better comparison.
I love the Tacoma, but the pricing sucks. Before the pricing was revealed, I hoped that my son would be interested in buying the new Tacoma and now, I am glad he is not interested at all.
My personal feelings...If Toyota truly addressed the seating position and comfort inside, then the logical choice is the Toyota. I'm assuming that the quality will still be there in the Toyota as well.
I do like the Chevy. I love the design. I don't like the lack of a knob for the lights. I hate that. I don't like the G80 rear locker. The Toyota with the sway bar disconnect and the rear locker definitely kicks the Chevy's butt in that department. The price? Everything with an engine (or battery) in 2024 is way too expensive. Still, I would finance that extra $7k for the Toyota. Just my 2 cents. Nice job laying it out though, Tim.
Toyota became king of midsized when they were the only ones doing it. Great for them. Now they have loyalty. And they know it and bank on it. Did you know they have had more recalls than other midsized since 2016. And jd powers and others have had them around 5th best for the last several years.
I own a Toyota, Honda and chevy. If you are a responsible driver, you'll make your vehicle last. Toyota built the rep and now have people that are willing to spend more just for the name even if they aren't getting more in return. They have to be loving it. People get in line no matter what.
@elche1976 ...I agree with everything you said. I currently own a 21' Nissan Titan and a '17 Subaru Crosstrek. I definitely understand brand loyalty. I've only owned 1 Toyota in my lifetime and that was a '14 Tacoma regular cab. It was a great truck! I haven't purchased any other Toyotas because quite frankly, I couldn't afford the extra $$$ in the past. I've owned 3 other Nissans, a couple of Fords, a couple of Hondas, and a couple of Dodge vehicles too.

The Ranger doesn’t really get the views. Two years ago TFL and I both bought Tundra trucks. We both got views and it worked out for both of us. Our work is different enough that I don’t worry about having the same truck.
Look up high output engine at Automobile Catalog. Torque at 2000 rpm is 375 fl*lbs far in excess of Toyota. Clearly the engine for Colorado is more powerful than Toyota with max of 310 ft*lbs. The torque max is at 3000 rpm with 425 (by graph) ft*lbs.
i could buy 2 colorado's for the price of the insanely profit margined tacoma.

@@ALMX5DP I'm with you my friend but there seems to be this desire to make it look like these Toys are $10k more when they really aren't. How far off is a stock Trailboss to a stock Off-Road? $3k? At least you get cruise on the Taco. And believe me, I'm no fanboy. I have yet to own a Toyota anything and always disliked them.
The Taco is insanely overpriced, all these trucks are, but you're going to pay 7k in repairs once that Chevy goes out of warranty.
Fact is the Tacoma will hold value and be a more reliable vehicle.
You boys buying the Colorado will be sick to your stomach when you go to sale or trade it in down the road. Don't take my word for it, do the research for yourself.
You should be comparing base engines because the Tacoma top engine is available yet. Comparing the base Tacoma engine to the top Colorado engine is blatantly unfair unless you are including price.
What base engine are you thinking? The only other option for Colorado is the WT de-tuned engine.

I love chevy trucks and toyota trucks. I will say this, the toyota is 7k more for a reason. You can buy 2 or 3 chevy trucks and have them all die before one toyota truck dies. That over the years has been a fact. While many chevy trucks see 250k miles when treated well. The toyota tacoma has many get 400k to 500k miles. There has been several on my tacoma pages to get 600k to 800k miles. If you want a long lasting truck, then the answer of ,why pay 7k more becomes clear. If you're not worried about having a truck running until the day you die lol, I think both offer amazing features for different needs. I think it comes down to what you are looking for. I like them both. I'd pick the tacoma because I do want something to last past my death, lol. 😂
I still have my 2005 colorado. Maybe you should stop blaming the tool for your inability to make things last. Stick with your Hecho en Mexico truck, that has more recalls than chevy since 2016 as well.
That may have been true when they kept a reliable V6. I wouldn't bet on that now that it's a 4 banger turbo. Toyota is not exempt from the laws of physics. Also for the price difference you could keep that pile of money in an investment account or buy an extended warranty to cover repairs if you are that paranoid. Nobody keeps their trucks to 500k anymore. Everyone has ADD and wants the latest and greatest. That's how Tim makes his money by reviewing new trucks.
I have both a 2019 Tacoma TRD sport and a 2023 Colorado ZR2. Yes, all my Tacoma's have been super reliable (have had 4 of them over the years), but the one thing you need to wary of is they all rust underneath way faster then the GM vehicles I've owned (Currently also have a 2016 Tahoe). My 19 TRD Sport has far more crust underneath then my 2016 Tahoe. Started spraying it with surface shield to keep it at bay.

It's how the wealthy stay wealthy and the poor stay poor. But if it makes you happy thinking you might sell a depreciating asset for a little more later, knock yourself out. I'd rather get a vehicle for what it can do while I actually use it, not just to impress others or what others may think it's worth after I use it. I guess that's why I still have the vehicles I've purchased and paid off immediately, now my kids are driving them because we know how to make vehicles last. And my house is paid off and we have no debt. But to each their own. Buy your truck to resell it. Keep up with the Joneses.
Also, who cares if the resale value 5 years later is higher. You have to pay that resale value upfront now. If you would put the resale delta into a certificate of deposit then it would make money for YOU for five years. Otherwise, it will make money for the DEALER and TOYOTA. It’s even worse if you buy with a car loan because then the so called extra resale value (that you have to pay upfront) will COST you 7-8% annually for five years. People don’t think at all. It’s actually amazing how moro(n)ic some of the justifications for the Toyota tax are.

Clearly the 2.7 in the Canyon makes more torque even at 1500rpm all the way to its peak of 3000rpm... The Canyon/Colorado should feel like a fright train compared to the Taco.

Who cares? My local Chevy dealer is discounting 2023 Colorados by $5000, and the 2024 haven't even arrived yet. Meanwhile, Toyota dealers around my area already talking markups. There's probably at least a $10,000+ OTD price difference between similar spec trucks coming up.
So, as a Toyota Tacoma owner and owner of numerous other trucks, is that what worth it? HELL NO! I've owned enough trucks to know that Toyota's reputation is not worth that big of a price premium. I'll pocket the thousands and let the Toyota loyalists bend over.
Oh I would too with discounts of 5k on Colorados. I need to look into that. My area don't have any Colorados just full size trucks
