I saw an interview with, I think it was one of the chicks from Heart and she said the rumble in the theater she first saw AIC in was mind-blowing. Something about how Laynes voice was coming from his core. The belly. Not the voice box. It's like a spiritual howl. I've heard Kurt Cobain also sang a lot like that. It's when your emotions and your voice become one. I saw AIC in "91. Layne was a monster! Absolutely one of the greatest singers of all time!

Layne did something very special for a man named Jerry Cantrell. Jerry always wanted to sing but never believed in his abilities, Layne told him he could do everything Layne was doing. The touching part is that after Layne past about 6-8 years later Jerry gave it a go and to me, it was magical. Now Jerry sings most of AICs music and has a another great man named William Duvall, who is absolutely brilliant and harmonizes with Jerry. To hear this band come back after what everyone thought they couldn't is beautiful. I feel like Layne would be smiling down like "Yeah I taught that Jerry guy a rift or two" lol 😆

@Dz ntz I LOOOOOOVE Jerry Cantrell, but he doesn't have a strong voice and he knows it, and Alice in Chains needs a poweful voice and a voice like his to do backing vocals to achieve those wonderful harmonies that we all love. (That's why I love Jerry, he's so professional he puts the band first so instead of putting himself as the lead singer he looked for someone more suitable. No harmonies, no Alice.)😃

He was just a beautiful soul. You can tell he was resigned to die. He had no interest in getting sober.
Part of Mad Season was formed was that all of the band members were sober and they hoped it would inspire him. But he was already lost. The saddest thing was how long it took for them to find his body. And it was because there had been no activity on his bank account.
Mike tried his best the last day he saw him to let him call the hospital because he was just so sick and Layne refused. They got into a huge argument about it.

@@carlahollars612 Well look at Steve Clarke, he really did try. He got checked into a rehab even after arguing with the other band mates about it and ended up drinking himself to death anyway. When you hit "rock bottom" as alcoholics refer to it, ONE of two things IS going to happen: you will quit or you will die.
Stevie Ray Vaughn's story is even more tragic because he DID get clean and sober; his playing improved; his sound actually got MEANER (can't think of any other way to describe it); his lyrics got REAL honest; even talking about his struggles with alcoholism in songs like "Tight Rope" and "Crossfire".
You can hear the difference in his guitar playing from when he was drinking to after he got sober... then he died in a helicopter crash. But the legacy he left behind; the lessons he learned were immortalized in his music and hopefully can help and inspire others that are struggling with alcoholism.

I wish someone reached out and helped Layne! Thank God someone helped me. I got the Best advice from a corrections officer, name tag "Smith ". I still believe she was an angel of God! She was a black lady, with care in her attitude, and even though I was only in St. Gabriel for 2 & 3/4 yrs, because of the time I'd served during Hurricane Katrina... I never heard of, or saw that officer again!! I made sure to ask about her!! No one knew her! Our Heavenly Father is real!!! Pray for yourself, and see His miracles!!! He changed my life thorough circumstances I'd have never seen otherwise.

Sometimes people aren't ready or just don't want help, from anyone. Some would rather be dead than sober....When most of your life has been lived under the influence it's extremely difficult to just drop the one (or 2 or 3) things that you've always relied on to feel comfortable in your own skin. Humans have always used substances and liquors to lose inhibitions and to celebrate together, mourn together, or just to relax. It's a tall order to ask someone to just drink water when everyone else is drinking away etc.

@HeatherComeaux many people DID reach out to Layne. He went into seclusion shutting everyone out. Especially in the last years of his life. He was not answering the phone or the door ( which was an intercom buzzer at the ground floor entrance of his building) He was on the top floor so they couldnt even break in. Jerry Cantrell would yell his name from the street but Layne wouldnt budge. He just ignored anyone who tried to confront him about his drug use. After his ex-girlfriend/ fiance Demri Parrot died in 1996 he seemed to plummet into despair.

I was just a young kid when Alice was coming up but I can relate to Layne so well like there will never be another Layne Staley he was a beautiful dude it's such a shame that he lost his battle addiction is no joke I've been fighting the battle myself for about 13 14 years now and if you don't get clean you will end up dead sometimes when you're so down and messed up with the using that it's just easier to let yourself lose the battle
