- The year 1983. Former World No. 2 surfer Ian "Kanga" Cairns had just created a brand new tour the "ASP" Association of Surfing Professionals, providing ownership and control of the sport for both the event organizers and the surfers on tour, and most everyone on the circuit was on board.
Backed by the biggest surfwear company at the time Ocean Pacific, the flagship event of the debut tour was the OP Pro in Huntington Beach. It attracted the biggest crowd by far of any contest to date as 125,00 spectators showed up, not only to watch the surfing, but the highly publicized Miss OP bikini contest. The surf event boasted the biggest prize purse to date of 50,000 with the winner taking $4,200 and a dodge truck along with the coveted trophy. The world's best showed up but at the end, it was two Californians left standing for the title, 22 year old Joey Buran and 19 year old Tom Curren. Also featuring Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew, Wes Laine and Mike Cruickshank.

When things were most fun and beautiful.
Best time to be a surfer...bring back the 80's.
I surfed in the WSA in the late 70's in California. Buran was always battling David Barr for first in Junior Men's division, while some kid named Tommy won every single Boys division heat in every contest all the way up through the West Coast Championships. That Tommy kid was unstoppable, even in the super heats, when he'd beat everyone from all the other divisions. That was around '77. So this event was a few short years later and there they were at the top of the heap. Cool to watch the groms flourish. Both nice kids, albeit fierce competitors.
I was there! Front row for the entire contest! Erin got robbed but they had to have a blonde in 83’ OP. Huntington hop..
@latentsea - Clearly Erin was the crowd favorite - and my favorite too. Super cute natural beauty.
Rabbit is a great Ping pong player too him and I had a 2 out of 3 competition at Chandlers party ,
