- The year 1990. The grand finale of the ASP world tour season and the most prestigious event in the surfing world, the 20th anniversary of the The Banzaii Pipeline Masters. The mood on the beach was somber, as we had just lost one of Pipelines favorite sons Ronnie Burns in a tragic motorcyle accident. With world title implications and triple crown points at stake, surfers were ready to send it at this dangerous playing feild, that makes Pipe one of the most challeging, and deadly waves on earth. Without a doubt, the favorite heading into the event was perhaps the best ever out here: Tom carroll.He won the event in 1987 and was frothing for another victory out here. But would he be able to get the waves and have the mental game to match his savant power surfing approach to the wave?

Recently a friend of my daughter (24 year old) had a super gnarly head injury surfing moss. He was talking about getting a helmet, and I told him I recall Tom Carroll being the first surfer wearing a helmet. This damn kid NEVER heard of Tom Carroll. I’m like how in the hell do you not know who that is??? WTF. Kids these days don’t care about their heritage. I love these history videos ! Keep it up brother

Tom Carroll Best Ever at Pipe lmAO! He's good but far from the best. Def in the top 90.
Up until that point I think it’s unanimous he was the best surfer pipe had ever seen.
I got to personally experience Pipe back in the seventies. The guy that was different but comparable for me at Pipe was Gerry Lopez. I'd love to read more from guys who saw these different guys up close. He'll, I'd love to hear more from all of them.
@@libertyblack715 Yeah I guess it wasn’t unanimous at I thought. Lopez was so dialed in where he made surfing pipe look easy in all conditions but Tom did things that didn’t seem possible.
