In the end, Toranaga proved to be as diabolical and power hungry as Ishido, maybe even more so. He treated everyone around him as pawns to gain personal advantage over his foes. All benefit of the doubt went out the window when he burns down Erasmus. He is keeping John imprisoned with obscurity, as Ishido did with the ladies. Becoming Shogun was his plan all along. Later he will have Ochiba and her heir son commit seppuku.
In my opinion Toranaga turned out to be the worst! (or best since he wins lol) He truly saw this as a game of power and was willing to sacrifice every one of the people who were closest to him to gain the Shogunate haha its almost psychotic. I guess that's what you have to do to gain true power!
The most beautiful part of the finale for me was how many people were affected by Mariko’s death, either by regretting it (Ishido, the Regents, Yabusige), remembering her poetry (Lady Ochiba, Toranaga) remembering her words (Blackthorne, Fuji), or honoring her wishes (Toranaga, the Monk Alvito). Toranaga’s vision (and four-dimensional chess game) was finally realized, but the show never forgot that Mariko was the true heart of the story, transforming everyone by her life and by her death, and destroying Toranaga’s enemies in a way an army never could. She was such an unforgettable character in a such a wonderful show. Thank you, Mariko-dono. You are the beautiful flower that finally fell, but, thankfully, you have been carried by the wind for all of the world to see and cherish, and you will never be forgotten. 🌸🌺🌸 This was a really insightful and enjoyable reaction. Beautifully said! I completely agree. Even with the story being centered around Blackthorne's POV and Toranaga's quest for power, it was Mariko's light that shined brightest. She has to be one of my favorite characters from any series that's for sure! Thanks for such an insightful comment! I'm glad to have you here
Bear in mind that these characters were based on real people, and in the real world the shogunate that was established from these events lasted 260 years and stopped the wars they had been fighting against each other. "If you win anything is possible"
You can't touch the air of the story because you want to talk, and you're just reacting to the letters of the lines. It's too difficult for you to understand this story, and what you see with appropriate eyes is just a lazy hour of unbearable meaningless reactions to hear, and your words have nothing to do with this story.
