Lyrics:
Eg songane søkte
Eg songane sende
då den djupaste brunni
gav meg dråpar så ramme
av Valfaders pant
Alt veit eg, Odin
kvar du auge løynde
Kven skal synge meg
i daudsvevna slynge meg
når eg helvegen går
og dei spora eg trår
er kalde, så kalde
Årle ell i dagars hell
enn veit ravnen om eg fell
Når du ved helgrindi står
og når du laus deg må rive
skal eg fylgje deg
yver gjallarbrui
med min song
Du blir løyst frå banda som bind deg
Du er løyst frå banda som batt deg
Deyr fé
Deyja frændr
Deyr sjalfr it sama
En orðstírr
Deyr aldregi
Hveim er sér góðan getr
Deyr fé
Deyja frændr
Deyr sjalfr it sama
Ek veit einn
At aldrei deyr
Dómr um dauðan hvern
English Helvegen (Way to Hel) Lyrics:
I sought the songs
I sent the songs
when the deepest well
offered drops so mighty
of Valfather’s pledge
I know it all, Odin
where you hid your eye
Who will sing me
in the death-sleep sling me
when I walk the road to Hel
and the tracks I tread
are cold, so cold
Early or in fading day
still the raven knows if I fall
When you stand by the gate of Hel
and when you must tear loose
follow you I shall
across the bridge of Gjöll with my song
You become free from the bonds that bind you
You are free from the bonds that bound you

I never leave comments - this may be my first one. On December 4th of 2023 I played this song for my step-father as he fought a painful battle with cancer. He was in my life for 45 years and was more of a mother to me than my own mother was. He had become nearly unresponsive and as I played this song I could tell that something was changing in him. At the point where the song hits a crescendo and the lyrics, translated are, "You become free from the bonds that bind you. You are free from the bonds that bound you," he took a deep breath, nearly sitting up, and made a sound of pain, his once closed eyes opened and fluttered closed. He layed back again and never regained consciousness. He passed away 14 hours later. Thank you, Einar, for gifting this song to all of us. I truly believe that this song helped my step-father transition across the bridge. I am so thankful to you so that we could give him this song.
That is beautiful! Thank you for sharing this beautiful story
You gave him a wonderful gift to help him on his journey. I’m asking my daughter to play this for me in my time. Thank you for sharing your story.
Seems like he just needed a little help calling the Valkyries to take him from his battlefield, to dine with the Gods. May he find peace in Valhalla. ❤❤
May your step-father enjoying his afterlife in Hel where he belongs with his ancestors.
Stay strong, you have all my support my friend.
I unfortunatly already know what you have to endure.. I lost my little sister 5 years ago... Time past so fast but also I feel like it was an eternity this tragedy happened..
I'm with you.
as i was reading your story, and came to the point where you described, you are free from the bonds, the song actually got to that point...
im not going to lie, but it teared me up man. i hope your step father hqad an easy crossing!
We played Helvegen at my dads funeral, as his coffin was carried away.
Thank you for helping sending him off.
I hope to ve burned on a boat, and sent away to Valhalla
May his spirit grant you wisdom and warm in the coldest winters of life.
This is what I want at my funeral, and actually writing other funeral wishes down right now (a couple of favourite poems etc.)
😊 thank you, Wardruna! 💖
he entered valhalla and he is doing SKOL

what?
it's the first song my goddaughter heard me sing. She was a few months old, not falling asleep, screaming and crying. I took her in my arms, I started to sing and she fell into a deep sleep all of a sudden.
thank you very much for this extraordinary sound that transports all generations
Good gracious, you literally sang a baby a hymn about death as a lullaby. I think it doesn't get more savage than that. Kudos.
what do you think nursery rhymes are made of? the truth of these songs are often horrible.
I only thank the group for having created a beautiful song and melody which gave me a beautiful memory.

may she sing you your last lullaby before your last sleep.
Really wished they made a studio album with Aurora doing vocals. That was magical.

I agree, but this one makes me happy too, because it has Katrine of Kalandra. Kalandra's version is fire, too!

My mother died 7 days ago. I want you to know that I played this as she lay dying to help her on her journey. I hope it helped her. I know it did me. Thank you for this.
Prayer for her soul may allah have mercy on her soul. Sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss. I'm sure your mother's afterlife trip turned out great with this fantastic soundtrack in the background.
May your mother rest as a Queen in Valhalla,so sorry for your loss 😔
Death seems less scary with beautiful songs like this. When you played this one at your Paris show in March, couldn't help but shed a tear, thinking of my father who lost his fight against cancer in 2018. Thank you, Wardruna
Это Родовая память.
Sorry for your loss
Death should only be feared if tho have not liveth life righteous...
Sorry for your loss man
Also the saying of the are going to a better place. Is a saying to only make people feel better about the act of dying. Songs do seem to help sometimes
For me wardruna is a painkiller. I do not remember if I wrote something like this, but, I have a regular migraines. No pill can take pain away. Thus I am turning on wardruna. Your songs put me in some sort of trance in which it is easier for me to overcome pain and fall asleep for some hours. Thus the pain goes away. I have been listening Wardruna for a long period of my life. So whenever I am stressed or in bad mood or depressed I listen to your songs as well. It brings me memories of past, times when I could afford myself to be more carefree and when everything seemed easier. As well you songs help me when I need some support, some stoic energy your songs help me as well. And your songs are perfect for hiling and walking in the forests. Thank you Wardruna, thank you for everything yoou are doing.

I feel you. I have a chronic illness, I'm 24 and I found out not long ago that my heart is functioning at 50% capacity when it should be functioning at around 55-65%

This performance of the song is riveting and showcases Einar's journey in presenting such a powerful work over the years; the drama and flourish given to the old verses at the end is wonderful.
Sorry, is this Einar you mention the character of a nordic saga? If this is correct, which one? Thank U
@@CkloLabella I am referring to the principal singer, Einar Selvik. There have been a number of videos and recordings of him solo and the group, sometimes with guests, performing the song. The very end of it, about kinsmen, cattle, and one's actions living on, is from an old piece of writing.
This is an incredible piece. My favorite is when Einar performed this live with Aurora. I first heard this 2 years ago following the passing of my father - one could say he too was a modern-time warrior serving 33 years with distinction in the army.
This song bears so many similarities and evokes deep seated memories of him.
Went from a drummer in a black metal band (Gorgoroth) to a singer shaman in Wardruna.
Nice journey.
I've listened to multiple versions of this song, and it NEVER gets old. Gods, this hits the soul!
i love the aurora one
@@hu031go Same here. It would've been better had some of the people in the crowd not talk and ruin the video.
@@jesseearles4692 There is a version with Aurora and no talking over the video.
Is not an otiginal song from wardruna? Thank U
@@CkloLabella It is, but many people have covered it, and so there are many versions.
someone said the really beautiful words about this song:
"I feel like its sending my soul someplace it would call home"
I unfortunately lost a friend recently to the demons that lived in his mind. I was listening to this song for almost a week straight and it still brings tears to my eyes. I'm glad he is at peace but grief still affects us all. I just pray that the gods be with him during his travels in the beyond realms.
the gods will surely keep guiding him on his journey on the astral grounds, be well you and the rest of the people who love him
While your friend lives in your heart he will never be lost. Like the rest of us, he is an immortal soul who has experienced many lives here. His recent one was a torment. These have imparted valuable lessons he’ll take into his next incarnation. Such is the true learning process. Do not mourn him. Celebrate his journey to a new experience - for death is the most incredible journey we all face. It is a renewal. It is a rebirth. And with any birth, there is pain. May your own pain at your loss be brief. Sending you love and as much healing as I can muster.
We all lose our dear friends and family. We must never forget them! We must fight to continue to our destiny with open arms! Sorry for your loss warrior!!
sorry for your loss. Ive lost friends in the same way its not easy.
I feel like the ancient spirits are calling my soul for a celebration and a feast like no other man has ever seen
Today my grandfather died. I couldn't say goodbye to him, but I decided to play this song in his honor. I feel grateful to have found this song, it helped me stand my ground and stay firm on my path, and now I hope that this song guides my grandfather on his path to Hel.
Ich kann einfach nicht anders, als es mir immer und immer wieder anzuhören.
May the Gods give strength and wisdom to each and every one of our Brothers & Sisters that comes across this masterpiece!! Sköl 🍻

This is not just words to music, it's an entire spiritual experience. This song touches one's spirit in a way that few songs ever can.

Hi. My music is quite good. what do you think of it? Can I give me comments?
Say what you want about the TV show 'Vikings' (very mixed opinion myself), but the soundtrack was outstanding in large part due to Wardruna. My favorite scene of the entire series was the Ragnar's fleet setting sail to attack Paris with 'Helvegen' playing and Einar himself standing on the dock pounding the drum and singing as they depart. Mixed feelings about the series as a whole, but damn that scene was truly great!
It actually wasn't Helvegen! It was a song for the show specifically!
@@neondecay3650 You are 100% correct and I did make a mistake there. I was thinking of the scene where the fleet is departing for England, not Paris (later in the series), and got my wires crossed. The 2 scenes are intentionally similar with Helvegen playing during the 1st departure and Einar himself performing during the 2nd. The show had it's flaws, but the soundtrack was outstanding throughout.
Every time Helvegen plays on vikings you know shits about to go down lol
Opening chorus of 'IF I HAD HEART', by Karin Dreijer, aka. FEVER RAY ain't bad either.
Best part, such glory
I am from El Salvador, a place so far away from this culture that it seems weird to feel this connected with it, it touches so deep within me that I feel like I had to live there in a past life, yet I do not understand a single word they are singing, thanks for this gift.

This was the first Norwegian song I ever heard. It changed my life entirely and opened up the world of my ancestors to me 4 years ago. Ever since then I've been studying German, Scots Gaelic, and Norsk Bokmål. I hope to move to Germany one day. This song woke me up in many ways and I'll always be indebted to you, Einarr, for this. Thank you for this song and helping me discover the history of my clan and family. So good to see Katrine on stage with Wardruna, Kalandra's cover was amazing in it's own right.
Hello.. My video is quite good. Is it ok with you?
I second that. I really love Kalandra's version of this, too. To me, Katrine is at par with Aurora, and Kalandra is completely underrated. And I am saying that as a metal head deep into folk metal and symphonic metal.

Definitely their best song overall. Lyfjaberg is up there beside Helvegen. And IMHO Kvitravn is their best overall album. So many drops of fire can be found there.
To me, the best version of Helvegen has to be the live performance with Aurora at the Bergenhus Fortress. Aurora really adds an extra extra layer of emotion and an interesting dynamic where Einar hits you like a hammer and she pierces you like a dagger especially at the climax. The set design is just so simplistic yet atmospheric too.
Lyfjaberg is definitely a very, very close second.
@@The1rust I get chills every time I hear the harmony between Aurora and Einar in the version you are talking about.
Don't forget Skugge!
@@The1rust I too love so very greatly that version of HELVEGAN with Aurora live. The harmonies they achieve, and Aurora singing, is absolutely an other worldly experience! Seeing these guys in March was absolutely magical. I hope we succeeded in giving them a warm enough welcome. Einar seemed to like our applause, we kept it going a while as they deserved it.
I have to say with all honesty this is the absolute best version of this song. Einar's passion is so admirable.
Это просто фантастика! Хоть слова и не понятны, но почему то они проникают глубоко в душу! Хвала Одину, что он подарил миру таких артистов!

Death isn't something we ought to fear. There's no need to. It is a NATURAL process WE will ALL go through. This is very powerful song. It touched my soul deep down. I'm proud of my Scandinavian blood❤💯💪🏻👊🏻

There are no words that can describe how this song makes me feel. It always brought tears to my eyes before I knew the translation.. and after, well.. I have a hard time listening to this song when I am at work or with others around. I love this song so much. Its so powerful.
This song has become part of the soundtrack of my life. Everytime I listen to it reminds me how brief life is. Thank you for sharing, and may the gods be with you.
Hello.😍. My video is quite good. Is it ok with you?
When this virtual live performance aired, we fed it through a projector and a killer sound system, invites our literal rock n roll gall of fame neighbor over and blew his mind! Absolute magic weaving
Hi🤘 My music is quite good. What do you think?
Sou do Brazil.

Your music speaks to my soul and the fact you translate your lyrics to english is awesome, thankyou for all you do. Blessings
I just listened to this version with the translation, and started crying for my dead son, lost far too soon, at age 27. I miss him, and have little hope I'll ever see him again. Beautiful music.
This song has saved me many times and still keeps amazing me to this day. Great work!
