I work in pro AV and we've been using NDI for awhile. Lots of broadcast style cameras and switchers support NDI now as well. The is the first more pro-sumer hardware device that I've seen added it in. It actually fixes the major reason that I bought the Rodecaster Pro II over the Mackie DLZ Creator for my home use, which is that I've got two computers on my desk, and with the RCPII it has two USB ports, so I can run USB to both machines and have them come in (and out) as separate devices. The DLZ couldn't do that until now. Your secondary machine could just be setup with NDI in and out as your primary audio devices and you could control everything off the DLZ. Pretty sweet!
I have a Q-SYS Core doing everything for my streaming setup. I'm about to integrate a Yamaha DM3-D into my setup so I have Dante feeding into the setup. NDI Is great but I like to take advantage of more robust AVoverIP solutions since NDI has a lot of latency compared to a solution from ZeeVee which zero frame loss. Thankfully ZeeVee has Dante options that can live on their 10G AVoverIp network. Thankfully I don't spec any Birddog equipment because I can't tell you how many birddog NDI devices I have in service right now...just sad.
Looks like NDI is 50-75ms latency, which is VERY noticeable. Dante or AES67 does the same, but at 2ms latency. NDI is typically sending video and audio together, so the latency isn't a big deal usually, but once you separate video and audio with it, you will definitely see some lip sync issues.
Dante also requires dedicated hardware codecs, so it’s faster / more stable, but can’t be added after-sale unless it’s via a card slot or as a separate piece of outboard gear. I’m not sure if AES67 requires dedicated hardware or if it can be implemented all in software as codecs.
@@seanp2k617 Dante does not require dedicated hardware. There is software based Dante, like their Dante virtual sound card for PCs as well as software based Dante in Q-SYS hardware.
That's not actually true. Dante can be added via software although you will experience more latency due to the lack or hardware encoding. The minimum latency for Dante Virtual Soundcard (as an example) is 4ms.@@seanp2k617
NDI is great! I've been using it to share cameras, scenes, audio, etc between PC's for a few years now. Replaced the capture card awhile back with NDI and never looked back. Now experimenting with a triple PC streaming/recording setup to offload functions. Video feeds powered by NDI. I've also recently been using Dante audio with their virtual sound card software, as well as an add-in card on the Behringer X32 rack mixer. Semi-expensive setup, but the audio routing capabilities over the network are amazing. Just doesn't coexist nicely with NDI - so have to separate them out. Sorry - bit of a rabbit-hole there - but fun to geek out on this stuff!
Interesting choice by Mackie to use NDI over something like Dante or AES. Don't get me wrong, NDI is amazing in the right use case and with the right infrastructure but also can introduce a fair bit of latency if not installed correctly. Obviously audio streams take less bandwidth than video streams so the latency with using this in a network with wired devices is probably not that noticeable. However if you start introducing wireless devices and/or devices in other locations as mentioned in the video, your latency will drastically increase. Also NDI doesn't really support any clocking, not a huge deal in this use case as a streamer but could become problematic in other use cases.
If you could have captured my face the moment you said "NDI" about the firmware update, they'd put it in the marketing material, haha. That's actually such a crazy huge boost to utility to have at the audio interface level.
I though it will be Dante or Madi, NDI is great too, but for Audio, NDI is just a little kid, the big guy was Dante AVB MADI, or even the obsolete one by Roland call REAC, NDI is primary design for video, but like this scenario, it's better then nothing, and it is the first to have network audio in this newly market "podcast mixer", but really love to see if they can implement others professional audio networking protocol.
Live audio engineer here who regularly uses Dante, Audinates audio over IP, so the concept is nothing new to me. But this is still fantastic. It’s streamlined your setup and made everything much more efficient. Fantastic stuff!
Do you have any tips for a home studio setup where I want to send USB midi for longer than 3m? I have a table with my USB gear (synths, drum machines, interface etc.) on one side of my room and my desk on the other. I have a mic and other equipment at my desk and I want to bring my interface over to my desk too, while still keeping it linked with the midi gear on the other side of my room.
they prob don’t want to pay to license NDI or Dante. Could still do AVB, I believe that one is royalty-free. It’s a niche feature that’s only relevant for a smaller amount of folks, and skews higher-end. These are prosumer devices for the most part. Pro production teams are going to use something like an Aaton, Zaxcom, Sound Devices, or Nagra recorder, and for installed or even touring sound, Dante is the standard. Another important thing to note: NDI is a software implementation while Dante has a dedicated chip. It’s also going to be less latency and potentially more stable, or at least more consistent, as it’s basically a small computer just dedicated to the task of converting to and from Dante. Dante also wants to be the only thing on a network, whereas NDI / AES67 can coexist. Venues with millions invested in Dante infra aren’t switching to NDI any time soon for audio, but it’s a nice option to have for stuff like they show in this video and I hope it gets more popular, esp given Dante’s recent issues with supply chain shortages and long time to market for stuff like this.
Considering the capability was built in, makes you wonder why it didn’t ship with it. I mean audio over Ethernet is not a new concept. During my audio engineering course, when we were doing our live sound component, we had a pair of Avid stage boxes connected to an Avid Venue system over Ethernet. It’s good to see it integrated into a consumer level product, don’t get me wrong, but eh. Feels kinda gimmicky to me, it’s not a feature I can see a lot of streamers needing personally
"That's two things" Congrats Harris, you figured out what David S Goyer couldn't when writing Man of Steel: The difference between 1 and 2. "There's only one way this ends, Kal. Either you die, or I do."
NDI is a new shade of lipstick on network streaming which has been around for nearly a generation now, perhaps,,,,perhaps. You've got me curious to research more though. Thanks man.
You should do a video on vivitar's line of streaming gear, idk if its walmart specific, but i've only seen it there. they have so much gear if ur on a budget- capture cards, mics, keylights its actually insane. it would be really cool to see how good of stream quality you could get from just walmart. would also make a really good title haha.
Hey there i have a question is it possible to request a video streaming related? If so is it possible for you to do a video on the using wireless earbuds( i plan on getting the soundcore vr 10 with its dongle). I was trying to switch over from wired headphones with mic which im currently using with the elgato hd60 x connected to my headset with the chat link pro. Cant remember but i think i heard there was issues with 2 mics? Have the wave 3 mic also along with headset mic. So was trying to figure out how would i do that without issues?

Perfection a pair of NS-10 are nothing compared to HS8. But the KEF LS50 METa makes a fair compromise as a pair of monitors and they are not but the specs say otherwise. Power then through a PS audio amp maybe an Audioquest dragonfly as is a necessity even if your not into sound and it’s not too bad anyway great vid. This mixer does NDI. NDI is really cool. Harris really loves NDI. Harris's desk is much less cluttered thanks to NDI. We should all worship NDI. OK OK but what else can this mixer do besides NDI?????
Dude! That is cool. Big question? You talked about sending audio through the wan from one location to another. Can one person on OBS output to NDI and then send it to someone else through through the WAN so it can be used as a vid/audio source? That wayn having if you did a podcast with someone else they can use OBS on thei r subide. You use OBS on yourside and capture or live stream it to youtube. IS that possible? That way we would connect two OBSs remotely where the connecting is being done externally through NDS. IS that possible or am I draming?
really looking into getting one for my DnD streams, just wish it had 6 to 8 xlr inputs so i can set up the podcast mics and stream mics from the other room also.
Is it just the main output that can utilize NDI? Any NDI inputs? You also can't freely assign specific inputs to specific sliders right? Rode's Procaster series still seems to be the one for dual PC setups, especially if you need your mic to go two both PCs. Rode hinted at bringing networked audio to the Procaster mixers at a tech show a few months back. They also said the next update will bring more virtual channels to the USB connections. I feel like that thing would be busted with more USB in/outs & a few NDI/Dante in/outs.
I use your Low Fi playlist for my podcast and for my BJJ gym so that when we record our matches that way Facebook and Insta don’t get angry! Thanks for making them !!!
Just got mine in today and idk if I’m dumb but I cannot get this thing to work. Downloaded drivers but can’t figure out what is what in windows settings to get mic to come through or audio to headset. And no videos really to show setup on windows, just setup on device.
1st thanks for the info! I will be getting the DLZ and wonder how one setups up the NDI source on the non USB connected devices. I would like to use NDI to get the audio from two separate PC's to my stream PC. I have been looking but cannot find an Audio Only solution. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the video. Seems like a great feature to stream audio bi-directionally. Can you maybe do a tutorial video on how to set this up on both computers, I'm in the market for a new mackie mixer.
i found a easy way. with ndi tools on both computers, you can use NDI Audio direct, VST 3 PLUGIN . so in wave lab use it on your system or whatever you want channel, and output it. then on your second computer it will just be available as a ndi source that you use with your daw or if you have wave lab. it's Free. But i do like it integrated with the mackie mixer.
This may be stupid question but can I use two separate PC's (a Windows PC and a MAC), have 1 connected via USB C and the other via NDI and be able to use the one mic across both PC's or is NDI output only? Use case is the Mac is used for work (mic needed for Teams) and the PC is for gaming. Would like to use the DLZ across both devices. This can be done with the Rodecaster Pro 2 but nor really sure what the full extent of NDI is.
I'm having one of those moments where I've used NDI for the past 2 years and simply cannot figure out how you setup a system level audio output to an NDI stream. The link you provided is just for the OBS plugin. What ninja skills are you using to get this direct audio output on both Mac OS and Windows? Thanks for your awesome content, by the way. I deeply admire your work.
I found it a lot simpler on Mac, where I could just use NDI Output as my system level output. Windows isn't quite as user friendly and I could only use it as an OBS plugin, though they do have the whole NDI tools suite. See if there is a solution in there for you.
@@Senpai I have the sam question though. You send it to your other machine, but are you running OBS or something constantly to receive the audio to play out the speakers or are you utilizing something like the NDI Video Monitor, so some other tool to make it play out your speakers on the other machine? That's where I'm confused. I can get the same thing to work with keeping an app open, just wanted to see how you were doing this.
Hi Senpai, Just checking if u still recommend this mackie DLZ and if ur happy with the firmware updates since u bought it? Im intending to use in it in a church setting where there are only 3 mics used and am sending signal into an atem extreme. I am conscious that it doesnt have remote app control but I dont think thats the end of the world ad I will have the mixer next to me upstairs in the gallery at the back of the chapel where I have my two cameras and another underneath staircase. Thats for the great video. Im also interested in ndi but its just something I migt not use if I cant also control levels remotely. I forgot to say that someone else controls the in house pa mix so this mixer would only be for my recording. Im not live streaming but rather using atem as a quicker way to edit videos in post using Premiere Pro.
Will you be taking a look at the M•Caster Studio (from Mackie also). This one seems more targeted towars "regular" users (aka not power users with high-end needs)
How good are the preamps compared to an audio interface set up such as an 18i8 or similar? I wonder if it's worth the shot, dropping $800 and this being able to replace the audio recording for Streaming, RUclips and Music Production. I know the biggest thing in this new set up is mainly the NDI feature, and it's a great new thing for Audio Mixers, but with all those features in the DLZ at that price tag I wonder if they had to cheap out on other components.
How was the NDI/Audio --> Mouse Click Delay? I tried to use OBS to send NDI from my streaming PC, to NDI on my streaming Mac -- and the delay was total garbage :)
Just checking if ur still daily using this mixer and whether ur happy with it. Couks u tell me whether this would be good for a three mic conference setup? The one pity about this mixer is it cant be controlled with an iPad if im not near the mixer.
Is this similar to the Dante ecosystem used in music studios? Also I’m not 100 percent sure but couldn’t this be similarly achieved with something like the Tascam model 12 16 & 24 series through the dedicated Bluetooth channel either by using your other devices Bluetooth signal with an audio TX/ RX transmitter? I send things like this as well as MIDI from my iPad to my MPC using Ableton Sync and either my Model 12 or a small audio transmitter. Also curious why I don’t see many people utilizing MIDI controllers more often in their setups to map things to OBS for streaming an camera change purposes
Its very similar but Dante has more flexibility and is much more stable. I prefer Dante and probably would have used that in this use case. DLZ I don't believe supports Dante so you would need a control surface that did if you really wanted a physical controller but its not needed can be done virtually.
I have a doubt regarding this amazing mixer. Could it be possible connect 2 pc at the same time? one for playing a game for example and the second one used just to recording/streaming by obs? Roadcaster II has 2 usb-c ports to do that without any problem... but Mackie DLZ creator maybe could use its usb-c port and another conexion as the 5/6 port (L/R) or maybe the stereo 7/8 port? Thanks a lot for your incredible and helpful videos man! I love them and always are great appreciated!
My thought is I could use this to not only stream what I am doing in music production but when doing reviews so instead of using a digital coaxial cable to another interface but do not have the control this has and this NDI might mean I can streamline this process, have more control and also move a setup around the house. Not idea if this is possible to get audio from another interface as this was not answered and maybe this the failing and silence usually follows such questions as my last one did.
It’s not ‘Over the Internet’, the terms ‘over the network’ is the right one. NDI is mostly used for Broadcasting, while Dante is commonly used in Audio Live and Recordings and more expensive device and protocols
I just bought this because of you. I love your videos they have been very helpful to me trying to become a new content creator and just wanted to let you know that I love you and your video. I had one question though, can I add voice effects, sound tracks on these like the Rodecasters for my live streaming?
@@mackietvI have the original rodecaster pro. Seeing all the problems with the 2 I decided to see what was out there and we’re keeping our eyes on this. So, NDI is great, I use it every day as a technical director for large live events. But, I feel like Dante would be more useful for input and output and routing. Dante also is more reliable in my experience.
You're legit the only other person I've seen mention Dante. Let's be real, audio-over-ethernet is far from new. We've been able to do this for over a decade now... To me, this just felt like an advertisement.
@@TheFakeNewsFrog Yeah, it's also painfully obvious that this is a consumer product. I try to keep up with the prosumer gear. But talking about NDI routing like its never been done before is a bit ridiculous.
What Microphone arm are you using on that desk? not the mic itself, you included that in your streaming kits, JUST the arm, as it's not present on any of the htree you have linked, ANd I've been looking for a low profile one like that to use with my Podmic (which I've been using since just after release, and will swear by to this day, but it's a heavy boy and broke the only Blue high arm I used to use.) so i need a replacement better attuned to the space i actually have.
I have watched all the videos about this mixer and everyone shows it stand alone. What does it look like from the host computer point of view? How many virtual audio channels do you have in and out of the computer? Can you program anything from the computer?
I'm a sound engineer, but I think you are the best audio gear reviewer around! This is amazing, and the touch capability and mapping make it such a great option for my home studio to replace my aging Didigesign console!

i found a easy way. with ndi tools on both computers, you can use NDI Audio direct, VST 3 PLUGIN . so in wave lab use it on your system or whatever you want channel, and output it. then on your second computer it will just be available as a ndi source that you use with your daw or if you have wave lab. it's Free. But i do like it integrated with the mackie mixer.
You can do this with 2 or more Macs using AVB, which is built in to all modern Macs. But this is super cool!
WHATS AVB?
I can get the same thing to work with keeping an app open, just wanted to see how you were doing this.
a stupid question but do you have any suggestions on how to set up arctis nova pro wireless with the wavelink software using the wave 3 mic?
Just wondered if the unit has added the feature to mute monitor out, when mic faders are opened like the rode 2.
Random Question @Senpai; do you use a sub with your HS8's? and great video thank you.
would like a second video with more details on setting up and using this feature. Some of us (me) are a bit slow...
How do you set up the speakers to accept NDI, do they have individual cat cable ports on the speakers?
I like the new angle!
Please make a tutorial on how you set this up because I am definitely curious. Definitely Underrated!
Hey great video, could you link that wallpaper you used on your curved screen please ?
I don´t understand how make wiped of Rode Rodecaster from the desk lefthandedly.
Does this have good mic processing like the rode caster duo?
I am now sold on the Mackie
Does it support virtual devices? Like the new update on the roadcaster 2 ?
I wonder can I use it with like one of the road Castile devices this NDI feature
could this be used with music production? i am wanting a mixer for both streaming and music production
NDI is great! It's arguably more useful for video feeds, but that admittedly uses way more bandwidth.
WHAT ARE VIDEO FEEDS ?
Not idea if this is possible to get audio from another interface as this was not answered and maybe this the failing and silence usually follows such questions as my last one did.
i could definitely use that
It’s not ‘Over the Internet’, the terms ‘over the network’ is the right one.
NDI is mostly used for Broadcasting, while Dante is commonly used in Audio Live and Recordings and more expensive device and protocols
Well, it's either going to be this or a Rode Procaster being as my GoXLR is waiting to go to the tech graveyard.
I just bought this because of you. I love your videos they have been very helpful to me trying to become a new content creator and just wanted to let you know that I love you and your video. I had one question though, can I add voice effects, sound tracks on these like the Rodecasters for my live streaming?
Enjoy your DLZ! Stay tuned for future updates to the firmware. This was only our first major update 💚
@@mackietvI have the original rodecaster pro. Seeing all the problems with the 2 I decided to see what was out there and we’re keeping our eyes on this. With over 800k monthly listeners I want to make sure I do my due diligence as far as research goes. Loving the NDI option though! Glad to see the first update went smooth!
Mackie DLZ or the Rodecaster 2?
could i play my ps5 through my computer speakers this way since my monitor doesnt have speakers? currently using the go xlr on my main setup
Hey Would love to see fantasy music for stream beats to use on DnD streams or playing bauldars gate content!
I really wish Mackue would make my dreams come true and make a 16, 24 or 32 channel DLZ mixer
so im not the only one getting ads for this device lol
If you had to choose one. Would it be the Mackie or the Rode podcast 2
How many stereo inputs does this unit have? Can the XLR mic inputs also be stereo ?
thats awesome thanks bro
Bro Harris, what is the mic arm you are using, on the desk at the beginning?
I see elgato logo on it.
This video is not from Mackie, and the boom arm he’s using here is the Elgato Low Profile Boom Arm
@@clemradio thank you
@@thisisabsurd7420 my pleasure
I have watched all the videos about this mixer and everyone shows it stand alone. What does it look like from the host computer point of view? How many virtual audio channels do you have in and out of the computer? Can you program anything from the computer?
This is better than the Rodecaster Pro II?
I'm a sound engineer, but I think you are the best audio gear reviewer around! This is amazing, and the touch capability and mapping make it such a great option for my home studio to replace my aging Didigesign console!
@senpai does it support wireless headphones, I see a USB port. If you don't know, try it.
theres also dante and avb
i bought the Ultralite MK5 today now i must wait for it to arrive
Can you use the DLZ as a DAW controller and are the faders motorized
sooooo its like a live audio console, Yamaha for instance has Dante which is audio over ethernet. that's wonderful. But! ur entire system needs to be NDI compatible?
You should do cable management
You could always have sealing mounted the speakers...
