Baba Jaga is a witch, true, but you could also call her "Mother Nature" ;) There are similarities to the Greek's Kirke.
Researchers are trying to reconstruct Baba Yaga's original function as the ruler of forest animals and a figure associated with the world of the dead, perhaps a degraded female deity or demon.

The word jaga in the Proto-Slavic language means torment, horror and danger. The word "witch" is even more interesting. A witch (pl czarownica) and a witch (pl wiedźma) in Polish are not the same. There is probably no equivalent for this word in English. In Polish, a witch means one who has knowledge (wiedż-ma). In pre-Christian times, it was a person who was mainly engaged in herbal medicine and keeping the settlement healthy. She was usually prettier and healthier. Because she knew how to take care of herself. :) To make it even more interesting, the witch could also be a man.

@@JessiesReact There are 5 short movies from Allegro which are based on Polish legends (not counting side-movies, like music videoclips, making-of, or some semi-explanatory clips). One movie - "Smok" (means "Dragon") - is separate from others , but there are 4 which are connected (actions take place in the same universe) and should be watched in following order:
      1) Twardovsky,
      2) Twardovsky 2.0,
      3) Operacja Bazyliszek (English: Operation: Basilisk),
      4) Jaga (English: Yaga).
In all 4 movies main evil protagonist is Boruta - a chief of Department of Slavic Demons in Hell. In the reality Basilisk, Perun, Yaga, Boruta (and others, mentioned by Boruta in "Yaga" movie) were pre-christian spirits, gods, demi-gods etc. which after christianization became demonic creatures or just devils. Twardowski was a man who sold his soul to the devil, and… rest of his story you may read by yourself.

"The figure of Baba Yaga (Yaga), probably originally important in Slavic mythology, survived only in a degraded form as an element of folklore. She appears there as an old, hideous witch (sagging breasts, one bone leg, blind or visually impaired), living in a hut on a chicken's foot deep in the forest. Baba Yaga was often accompanied by a black cat, a raven, an owl or a snake. She kidnapped people wandering in the forest (especially children), then murdered and ate them. She was also credited with sending diseases and other ailments. At the end of the story, she usually fought a fight with the positive hero and died. Occasionally in folklore there is a motif of the gracious Baba Yaga helping people." Translate from Polish Wikipedia.

Jaga was the strongest witch, the protector of nature. Originally, in Slavic beliefs, she could even be a goddess-nature, like the Greek goddess Gaia.
However, the context is that after Christianization, the Slavic gods and goddesses were imprisoned in the depths of hell.

It wasn't an angel, it wasn't a devil. Yaga is the mother nature - she can be loving or destructive, she just needs some balance on the earth :) It's just our folklore - it's just a 5000 years old legend, or even older ... the point is, it's still accurate in the XXI century ;)

Perun (actually Pierun; also Piorun, Pieron) - a Slavic thunder deity and one of the leading deities in the Slavic pantheon. "Perun" is a name proposed by some researchers on the subject, resulting from the name of the thunderbolt perunъ, related to the lexeme pьrati, 'to beat, to strike', as meaning one of the chief Slavic deities. The personification of the thunderer, the god of thunder and lightning. According to the researchers' intention, it is to organize individual traces of belief left behind by the cult of Slavic tribal thunder deities. These include: in the Old Polish tradition the name Piorun or Grom, in Polish folk sayings also Pierun, in the Old Russian tradition Перун (pronounced Pierun). In popular culture, the name Perun is most often used to refer to the chief thundering deity of the Eastern Slavs.

Według wiedzy oficjalnej, nasi przedchrześcijańscy przodkowie byli "małpami" żyjącymi w ziemiankach i na drzewach, a cywilizację i kulturę przyniósł nam Kościół. I nagle pojawili się Polachy ze złożonym własnym językiem. Przecież to absurd.

Yaga was a witch, a forest protector and the guardian of the metamorphosis of a child into an adult. As this required the" death" of one stage and the " birth" of the other, Grimm brothers used it and created a tale of Baba Yaga who is ugly, kidnapps children, fattens them up and eats them.
Therefore in this interpretation there is a lot connections of Yaga trying to take back civilisation and nature to flourish, oak tree she is planting is the sacred tree of Perun, slavic god of thunder, therefore Boruta was so worried in the end. Noone messed with Perun. Slavic mythology revolved around nature, sacred trees and forests, and the respect for nature and connection of man and nature.
Grimm brothers didn't create a concept of Jaga as a ugly child/man eating demon, it was a Church, when Christianity arrived to Slavic lands , Church was trying to eradicate all pogan beliefs system and customs. One of the ways, was degrading pagan deities to the rank of the demons an portrate them as something unclean/unholy. Grimm brothers adapted the Christian version of Jaga and add few things from themselves and as their fairy tale were famous , the overal image of Yaga is negative, even though it was originally positive. With those few people remembering the origins , the big villain image of Yaga was spread around the world.
    Like the very term witch.
Originally in Polish lands term witch was addressed to very wise women who got knowledge about herbs and healing. With coming of Christianity witches were portrayed as those serving devil ( they were originally pagans like the whole Slavic societies, duh) . Then those who were Christians, but got knowledge, wisdom and knew how to think independently were hunted down and burnt at stake ( inquisition) . Thankfully in Poland Inquisition was quickly abolished as Polish Kingdom established freedom and equality of beliefs( in XVc. were last cases of inquisition judgements).

These films are immersed in Slavic mythology. To notice all the threads and connections, you probably have to be born in this part of the world.
One example. Pretty obvious. Perun is the god of thunder, something like Zeus or Thor. You see for yourself that Zeus and Thor are not the same. Perun is similar to them, but he is not them.
