I know! but the video was getting a little too long as it was and I've done a power weapon for my emperor's champion once. I will look into making a power weapon tutorial in the future
Love it man! such detail and wonderful quality of that brush! though only a chaos zealot would have a such an obsession....I'll be keeping an eye on your videos for heresy!
I have only made one power weapon on my emperor's champion tutorial but it's a bit simple. I will look into it and do a tutorial in the future. Thanks for the comment!
I don't know where to begin with how stupid your comment is. I understand you meant for it to be a positive comment but come on. We are in 2016, learn which "your/you're" is the right one already. "You should become a painting teacher" What the fuck do you think he is doing? TEACHING OVER 50,000 PEOPLE HOW TO PAINT GREY KNIGHTS, fucking moron....
Awesome video. I am just getting back into the hobby and pan on playing Grey Knights. This gave me some great ideas for how I can paint them better. I look forward to attempting some of these techniques
great tutorial ...!!!... just started a grey knights army and I am looking forward to playing them.. I am a long time ork player and used your method for my orks ...keep up the great vids !!!!!
omg this helped me so much thank you! Going to be using this on some Slaves to Darkness guys later on, though I'll be using Ironbreaker to Runefang Steel. I'll have to be careful with the blue wash. Thanks!
Thank you for this vid! :) I'm hoping on collecting grey knights and I'll most likely use your video as a guide line when I'll be painting my warriors. I really liked it and I'm defiantly gonna look thought your channel for more awesome painting tutorials :D One little side note, I was kinda disappointed with the fact that you didn't paint in the sword, but I do understand that it comes down to preference :3 anyway great vid and I hope you'll keep up the good work and thanks again :)
Why not put the first coat of Leadbelcher through the airbrush too? Maybe thin with water and a little glaze medium and then clear coat with satin varnish?
Great video as always! You seem to be the only one using a brush, everyone using an airbrush on RUclips :/ Anyway, keep up the good work man! Got yourself a new sub!
Thanks for the vid, I'm following this closely while painting up my strike sqaud, could I ask though, do you have a link to the specific liquitex product you used to thin down your first leadbelcher base coat?
Dunno if you're still answering questions, but in your opinion would a highly thinned Guilliman Blue glaze give a lighter blue shade instead of the Drakenhoff Nightshade? Im assuming the Guilliman Blue would be more brighter and clear. I'm trying to go for a very clean Grey Knights look. Great tutorial BTW, I wanted to use this very scheme but didn't know what the final product would be.
I'm thinking about making some Astral Knight space marines. so silver with a blue trim. Know any way to make the blue look a little more metallic than on your typical Ultramarines?
how necessary would you say the black primer is? and is there an alternative for the first coat? (using one of the gw black air paints from an airbrush etc)
This www.amazon.com/Blu-Tack-Reusable-Adhesive/dp/B001FGLX72/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420689383&sr=8-1&keywords=blue-tac or some equivalent works well for that task.
I'm new to 40k and I'm making a kill team of grey knights. I don't have any paint, are there any good ways to get all these Paints cheap or do I just bite the bullet
Nice work! Watching this in preparation of painting about 60 Reiksguard Knights including the Reiksmarshal. What paint range would you recommend getting for this high silver look? Ironbreaker+Runefang I guess should do it for base and layer but I'm a bit off with how to shade and highlight it up to a polished mirror look. Thanks! :)
+Aaron Rock Regular space marine models will be missing the helmets, purity seals, scrollwork, lettering and I for inquisition that all the grey knight models have. Also most GK models have storm bolters attached to their wrist, which obvs regular space marines won't have either. I have seen some folks turn the dark angels that come in Dark Vengeance into nice looking grey knights. So my answer is if you're willing to do some light conversions you can make regular marines look like pretty convincing grey knights, but ultimately the rule is anything your opponent is ok with is fine.
crcromwell thank you I decided to not do grey knights and do a grey space wolves chapter as it only requires green stuff and a couple of parts and since I'm still in school and not old enough to work in ireland I have a very low budget. And I mostly play chaos but I have assault on black reach and dark vengeance to convert.
So I have 22 pots of various paints, and felt I was ready to watch this video and start painting. Despite my paints being bought off someone who fully painted their GK's with them, I only own 2-3 of the 10-15 different pots used. Im guessing this method is way over the top compared to the average paint job?
yes, you don't need to highlight and shade every color. just the most important to you. I just go through the entire process so people can see what you can do but you don't have to
Couple quick noobie questions if you can. Just got done with the Nuln Oil step and wasn't sure how much I should be applying, should I be saturating the recesses and letting it dry or just enough to highlight and see effect? I used a primer color called "gun metal" on my army already, why do you suggest using black instead of something like that? 2 gold pots I have are liberator and retributor armor, are those not good choices? Want something that really pops but im somewhat colorblind so it all looks pretty similar to me. Worried a bit because of that so I have been putting off this painting step for a while.
Absolutely awesome video, Fish. I just started Grey Knights, and this'll help an immense amount. Though if you don't mind me asking, do you have any suggestions for Purifier helmets? I plan on running one or two squads of them, and I'm not really sure how to go about the white helms. I was thinking of applying that coat of Celestra Grey and White Scar like you showed in the video, but do you have any recommendations on what would be best to shade and highlight it with?
TheApatheticFish Wow, thanks for the insanely quick reply :P. I'd just like to say, that you are definitely one of the best painters i've seen on youtube, and your tutorials are really easy to follow :) Thanks for producing such high quality content.
TheApatheticFish Ohh, also I forgot to ask, what paint is a good replacement for Vallejo Model Color Black? I would guess Abaddon Black, but I don't even own a brush yet :P
VintageLJ I would honestly say i really like the Vallejo colors most. They have a more matte look to them which really suits the stormbolter. It also works fantastic for my Black Templars.
I don't think you need permission because if you look in the description at the bottom of some. Videos it says standard RUclips licence so do what ever you want 😁
you can use water instead if you don't have Liquitex drying retarder or lamian medium but the properties of them are such that the paint maintains its properties and you're not just watering it down. Lamian medium for example is just the medium in which paint flows. basically transparent paint. Adding it to your paint will thin it and maintain it's properties.
There's nothing different between the spray and the normal base paint. However, I'd like to stress that there may be some areas you'll miss using the spray like the primer. But for that you can clean up those areas with normal leadbelcher!
you can paint it in separate parts if you want but you have to pin them to something so that you can paint them without touching them. also you have to leave the conections clear if you want to use plastic glue. I think that its a lot more work but it can be done if you want. I would understand why you were painitng them separated if you are airbrushing in different colors but at least for me it's easier to paint them completely assembled and you can start playing before you have a completely painted army.
TheApatheticFish Just use Locktite Ultra Gel glue...the black and blue bottle...it dries fast, and very secure without having to leave anything bare, and as long as you don't gob it on, it won't affect the paint job. And even if you do put too much and it creeps over with a white foggy effect at the edges...a quick light clear coat of matte spray will instantly make that vanish. Also it is completely unnecessary to pin things to paint them. Just hold one part and paint the rest...move on to a different piece...and by the time you have all pieces started you can loop back and finish the parts where you were holding it. I've painted 100's of models this way without issue (Guard and Tyranids)
I have been watching your videos for quite a few months now. You have always been a good painter but i can see you are still improving all the time. You seem to be able to paint very fast as well. My problem is as a learner i spend soon much time switching back to previous colours to clean up. I am still learning how to get different colours thinned correctly . I am sure some colours require more or less water than others. There is no set mix it seems. For instance when i use a fine detail brush the paint either drys immediately on the tip or i add a tiny bit more water and it floods the mini. I am getting frustrated.
I see what you mean. I think the cleaning up issue is something that you will be getting better at. the more you paint the more brush control you will have. You are correct about thinning colors. some colors need more water or medium to thin down than others but always try to thin down at least a little, don't use colors straight from the pot. And about the fine detail brush I understand completely, you can use liquitex drying retarder to keep the paint wet for a little bit longer and so that it doesn't dry on the tip of your detail brush so quickly. Liquitex drying retarder is one of my favorite mediums at the moment and I use it whenever I want to edge highlight and paint metallic colors. Also clean your brush very often when you are using the detail brushes. don't let paint stay on the brush for too long. Hope this helps.
don't you just love it when you have all the paints for a tutorial?
don't you just love it when you've been painting warhammer so long you always have all the paints for a tutorial?
@@VerdantTrash hmf my metal color paints never age well enough for that :'(
I just had this too. It's like the stars aligned
Perfect tutorial!
I have painted my entire GK Army based on this. Excellent and easy.
That glowing effect on the eyes is class.
It is also my favorite army. And if there were lightning on the sword, it would be just perfect.
I know! but the video was getting a little too long as it was and I've done a power weapon for my emperor's champion once. I will look into making a power weapon tutorial in the future

Thanks Gamza! I'm definitely not a heretic.. :) (cough) blood for the blood god! (cough)
I'm about to start painting a GK army. this is going to be the perfect reference vid. Thanks
I'm using this video to paint my entire Grey Knight army. Great resource.
I like how you go through the steps, good guide, I'm going to use a few of these to give my friends imp guard a hard time
Gotta love those baby blue eyes. ;)
GJ has a nice overall look.
Magnificent. Very cool and educational painting tutorial
Such a great tutorial. I'm going to try this and your Iron Hands tutorial for my warband,
Just started Grey Knights. Very good tutorial.
Brilliant!!! As always, and so quick
Great painting tutorial you are awsome at painting
Thank you so much for the awesome details on how you painted this. One of the most informative videos I have watched.
great work this is my next army project.really enjoy watching your videos
the way you have do the eyes is amazing!
Thanks mate! it was quite simple to be honest and it does look pretty good. Thanks for the comment! :)
Awesome! I will implement that on my army right away. :) Could you also make a short tutorial for force weapons?
I have only made one power weapon on my emperor's champion tutorial but it's a bit simple. I will look into it and do a tutorial in the future. Thanks for the comment!
The eyes are awesome!! Truly your a hobbyist, you know what your doing and you show and explain it well. You should become a painting teacher!! : )

I'm thinking about making some Astral Knight space marines. so silver with a blue trim. Know any way to make the blue look a little more metallic than on your typical Ultramarines?
This is a bit late but look at the scale 75 cobalt alchemy
how necessary would you say the black primer is? and is there an alternative for the first coat? (using one of the gw black air paints from an airbrush etc)

Hey man awesome video! I would love to see a panting tutorial for some of the new skitarii or cult mechanicus models. :)

What are the recesses
I'm new to 40k and I'm making a kill team of grey knights. I don't have any paint, are there any good ways to get all these Paints cheap or do I just bite the bullet

wouldnt it go faster if you just buy the leadbelcher spray can ?
very cool man - thanks!

Mix the silver with a bit of blue paint
Очень клево получилось=)
This is so much better than that wack ass GW GK painting video
Is there a reason why my leadbelcher looks like pencil lead and his looks like normal Grey Knight Armor??
Can you use normal space marine models as grey knights?

I'm no master painter but I would say don't shade or highlight but leave as White scar (bright and vibrant) on celesta grey
Is spray painting the model chaos black a good substitute to airbrushing the primer?
Definitely!
TheApatheticFish Wow, thanks for the insanely quick reply :P.

I don't think you need permission because if you look in the description at the bottom of some. Videos it says standard RUclips licence so do what ever you want 😁
+Garry Armstrong i think thats just if you are selling stuff
This might be a newbie question but What are the mediums for? Can water be used as replacement?

TheApatheticFish I see.. Thanks! i did not see anywhere in my country selling Lamian medium. Guess i'll stick to water for the time being
waynez78 Lamian medium is a citadel product that comes the same way as any other citadel paint in a pot. your local game store should have it
What is ammo
Would spraying it with gw leadbelcher spray be good after black primer or would that be a different result over painting it
There's nothing different between the spray and the normal base paint. However, I'd like to stress that there may be some areas you'll miss using the spray like the primer. But for that you can clean up those areas with normal leadbelcher!
For some reason I have a grey knight squad on my shelf don't know how I got it and why I have it
Hmm it's the holidays soon so why not time to paint

You forgot the storm bolter magazine >_
Cheers helped a lotttt
Would love a tutorial on how to paint the sword, but WITHOUT using an airbrush. I don't have one :(

TheApatheticFish do you bulid your models always befor you paint them? just thinking it would be easier to paint in parts
