Netflix in general should do more making-of documentaries. Some of their shows are the most masterful storytelling currently being made. And some of us want to know all the nerdy details about what goes into them.

The effort put into this particular episode absolutely paid off. I was about 10 minutes in before I realized what was being accomplished. I was absolutely floored. I can honestly put this in my top 10 favorite episodes of television. Not only did The Haunting of Hill House deliver on the spookiness, but it had heart. It made you really care for these characters. It lulled you into being vulnerable, and then used your vulnerability to scare you. It was effective filmmaking all around. If you aren't crying or being blown away by technical achievements, then you're probably looking over your shoulder to make sure nothing is lurking behind you. What an unexpected gem.

The raw existential horror was the real horror of the show. Tricking us into believing the kitten was alive when really, it was just a bug crawling out of its mouth. Shirley cutting out her dead sister's internal organs in the fear that another person's make-up couldn't capture Nell's live self properly. Theo's idea of a painfully void afterlife of absolute, eternal nothingness. The anxiety of your children growing up to become addicts or wind up dead or inherit a horrible illness. That's horror

Hey, it is adapted from the novel - Haunting of Hill House. Which actually is a terror novel not horror. And I found out the difference just a a couple of days before I watched it :) That the anticipation of the scare - the anxiety, elevated heart rate, sweating, is called terror and the revulsion you feel after you experience the supernatural is horror. Having known that I think they did a superb job. The novel is also considered the best in the terror genre. A pure terror work in general is rather rare. And I gotta say I really felt anxious watching it and for a couple of days after. While I usually laugh through the horror movies these days.

I totally agree! I liked a lot of his films. From Oculus all the way to Ouija: Origin of Evil. That guy really knows how to make a great horror film. He depicts great characters that actually makes you care for them and the scare factor is really well done without relying too much on jumpscares. He even uses the same actors from time to time.

I'm just imagining how hugely satisfying it must be as an actor to do something like this. I'm primarily a theatre actor and I often hear from actors who prefer doing film that they don't like the in-depth rehearsal process of theatre and the pressure of only having one chance in performance to get it right and they feel like on stage they have to be so much "bigger"...whereas I enjoy that process and that pressure and have a hard time raising the stakes for myself emotionally in an on-camera situation. But this episode is kind of the best of both worlds, like Hugh Thomas said. From an audience perspective it feels very theatrical, it has the energy of a live performance and they draw you in with them like you're all experiencing it in real-time. Truly incredible.

i was watching this episode so deeply and like 5 minutes into it, i was like “wait wait holy shit... this is one shot” and the aspiring movie geek in me jumped out and i started like crying sort of like “omg they had to film this over 15 minute shot, everything is perfect and choreographed so neatly, the swiftness of the exchanges and pans so amazing. I can’t wait till i get older and start creating stuff like this. And the actors hit every. single. beat. never missed!” it was overall so entertaining and intriguing, i 100% value the cast and especially crew for the precision of this episode and entire show. This show deserves manyyy awards, it’s so completly driven.

This is the most amazing horror movie series that is not horrror, it is so much about the Feelings that people have one for another. things left unsaid. the cinematography is so overwhelming, how come in every shot that has a pan or tilt when the movement stops and the frame is perfect. It bring s so much in to our attention the Being next to close but being far. ,Somuch a drama about wonderful people. . the suffering that Nell goes through ..is so stabbing into our emotional side. it has so many moments where it melts your heart. and the scary scenes are so clever made without the spirits shouting something or anything .Netflix this might be your masterpiece!

I thought that I'd be bored if they got deep in all the characters, wrong again, every character had it's own magic and play their part. Wait are you serious? I've tried to watch AHS about 10 times now and I always bail after a few episodes because it's so cringey and poorly-written.

I mean, this show is vastly superior than any season off AHS, and I'm speaking as a fan of both shows.

When I read that the first scene of this episode (which ran for I think 15-16 minutes straight) was done in a one long shot, I was amazed more than I already am with this series! I mean, if you saw the scene that I'm talking about, there's a moment where Hugh is looking at and talking to his children - all in their younger version, then after the camera rolls back to him then back to his children, they all are in their present selves. All included in that one single shot that they did. Like, wow, the professionalism and dedication of both set of actors - the adult, more so the young ones - are impeccable! Not to mention the talent and precision of the whole production crew! Wow!

I didn't realize until halfway through this episode what they were doing with the long takes and when they lightbulb went on, my jaw hit the floor. Just as astonishing amount of effort to pull this off, and in a way that enhances the narrative and doesn't feel gimmicky

I was so focused on what was happening in the episode and tea being spilled on the family drama that it didnt even occur to me how long the takes were. I noticed a difference in the way the scenes were shot and thought it was extremely creative, but it totally went over my head how long they actually were LOL

Can I just say this is one of my favorite episodes because of how amazing the camera work was. I honestly love how much it caught my eyes and the way they directed the camera on the actors and everything else. This episode definitely felt like the most climactic part where everything was going to spill out.
