Wow 10-12 knots that was really racing over ground for that large of a yacht! Great tips on the current as well as getting out of a dock slip in tricky conditions. Thanks!
I am not a sailor at all .. but I see your videos very knowledgeable and nice explanation to the viewers .. I respect your experience and sharing ..wish you enjoyable days ahead .
Thanks for the video. The procedures for leaving the dock are clear and concise. I enjoyed the night sky and have often wondered why more sailing vlogs don’t film that aspect of off shore cruising. Travel safe.
Night shooting is very difficult and I'm sure many sloggers would love to film it more. We shoot these using the Sony A7SII with a VERY fast lens otherwise you can't see stars etc. Autofocus doesn't work and the lens has a extremely narrow depth of field. Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the expensive/troublesome gear we use to get the shots :-)
Thanks +Silent Joy Glad you liked it! Yes we've also used the water temp in the past. But it doesn't tell you the speed or which side you're on so the Current Prediction maps were a huge help!
Yet another very enjoyable video. Your explanation of what you are doing and the effects of the Gulf Stream are very helpful. I have one question. At around the 4:10 mark it appears you have a Q flag flying. I was under the impression that was only when you have just pulled into a new foreign port. Is that actually a Q flag?
a) With the wind blowing you from behind, do you still need to zig-zag moving north or does the wind hit you from the back making you move straight forward? b) How does is video camera able to capture the stars, what camera are you using and what settings? c) How are you crossing over to the Pacific ocean if you are in the Atlantic? Thanks, I enjoy when you make your journey into a lesson. If only all the classrooms were like this!
In this video is/was your destination the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis? If so, I would have really liked to have seen your boat. I was there and you guys were sitting at a table near mine at the 59 North presentation. I'll have to kick myself if your boat was there too and I missed it! Scott W
Yes we were at the show but Distant Shores III was not in the show. She was tied up nearby at Port Annapolis Marina and we took some Patrons out sailing. Sorry we missed you!
We have two questions for you! Why did you guys decide to skip dingy davits? and what program did you use for the animation of the boat backing out of the slip? Thanks, and keep up the good work!
We covered this very briefly at 5:57 min. in our video "Top Tips - Mainsail and Rig Trip". It may be best to start watching at 4:24 min. when we talk about rig tension in general. But we could do more on this. Great idea! ruclips.net/video/kcBft5QEusA/видео.html
Hi Erik We’re shooting with the Sony A7S2 and a Very fast 1.1 lens and it can see the stars. It can almost see the phosphorescent plankton but I have to go to a really high ISO for that. Focus is very tricky with that lens though. It’s amazing how the newest cameras are so sensitive even though we’re shooting in 4K 😅🙏🏻🎥

I see that you have run your guy for the poles through a mid ship cleat. I'm going to try this. Right now I have to put chafe gear on my life lines because that is the contact point. My mid ship cleats are fairly smooth as I imagine yours are so even though there is a possibility of chafe we will be ok if we keep an eye on it. I can also see how this helps keep the end of the pole down a little further. I'm giving seminars at the boat show in St Pete this weekend and I do promote your website and videos when talking about cruising the Bahamas. Take care and hope to run into you guys again somewhere. Thanks Fly-guy-AB glad you're enjoying! - we are doing our best to keep in touch. We're actually anchored in a remote Bahamas cay right now but have very good internet through cell-phone signal so have been monitoring... Paul

Always informative and entertaining thanks for sharing.
looks like it was a wonderful passage. hope all is well with you both during these strange times. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan
Great info on the Gulf Stream with Iridium GO. Thanks
Thanks Patrick. Yes the IridiumGO is a game changer for offshore sailors. And PW is an excellent way to get weather offshore too!
The 'how to's are my favorite part! Thanks for doing these!!!

Great sailers and filmmakers. I love every episode. Be safe.
I learn something every time you do such a video. Thank you, and Go Well.
Your night sailing footage is incredible
It’s always nice to have a good push from the stream 😎
When I grow up I hope I figure out life like these two have
We're looking forward to riding the stream north in a few months. 3kts of current in the right direction sounds WONDERFUL.
great content!!
Excellent and informative. Loved it. 👍
learn so much from u, thank you. 30yrs sailing, I did not know that either. It explains a lot (of good things)

Awesome, truly amazing...
Good hints on leaving the berth!
There's so much work in this footage! Hope to meet you one day. Fair winds!
Appreciate your informative videos.
Another great video DSTV! Really nice job of the graphics too!
wonderful
I always LOVE your productions! Glad to see your sub count moving up!
Glad you enjoy our videos Robert. We also like to see our sub count going up :-)
Thank you
Great video, love to "see" the stream. I did not know this was available. I also heard you can judge by the water temperature to know if you're in it.
Thanks +Silent Joy Glad you liked it!

At 1:36 I think you meant to say "under power you have to display a *225º light* over top of your navigation lights"
What are your thoughts on the need or desire to install a wind vane?
Nice😍
really love the graphics for the departure from the dock. Are you doing those yourselves? They look great.
Thanks Nick. Yes I do them with Apple Motion. They’re fun but take a while 😅glad you like them

What is the line clutch on the port side used for.....looks like a furling line is rigged up thru it

How do I get those water current overlays. What app is that?

Why the undocking hassle your boat as bow & stern thrusters and probably turns on a dime?
It's good to be well practised if and when the expensive fancy gear craps out.
How long was your passage from marsh harbour to Beaufort. Or did you start at west end. Great video and great fishing
It was a 3.5 day passage from Marsh Harbour (not West End) to Beaufort Inlet. Glad you enjoyed the video :-)
Something I never see in anyone ones videos on youtube, is the adjustment of the backstay. Could you please address this in a future video. Thank you.

Hi folks, long time follower. What camera were you using to get the starry skies? Have never been able to get the stars offshore. Thx!

@@DistantShoresTV Ah yes, have heard good things about that camera's stabilization and its low light abilities. Thanks much for the response! ⛵🌟 📸
