      Thanks Beth (and Wilfred) yes we do try hard with audio since its so easy to end up with wind noise especially when its blowing as it was in this vid. I was using an external lavaliere mic with a new larger "hedgehog" covering to keep wind away from the mic. then I generally hide the mic if I can under a shirt or in my jacket if wearing one ...

    No sugar coating in this video! Well done and shared! We had an incident last summer near Kingston, ON where the wind was so strong, we dragged anchor even while powering forward with our diesel! A couple more minutes of high winds and we would have been aground. We have enormous respect for Mother Nature after that incident. We limped over to Prynyer's Cove basking in the extreme calm and serenity of that anchorage. G&T to celebrate too!

It was a sunny day. Otherwise I would have thought it was a small tornado! I'm sure glad that no one was hurt connected with this water spout. Smooth sailing to you. Scott W

      Looking at the size of the base, the cloud formations, the weather, the way that boat is blasted, I think this one was getting real close if it wasn't. An F1 is winds greater than 73 statute miles per hour. They said in the video 100mph but I don't know if that was just a figure of speech.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  4 года назад +1

    A word of warning: the water spout likely didn't break up as it went over the islands, it just wasn't as obvious because it wasn't filled with water or soft soil. I whitenessed a water spout from the air in the north west territories a few years back: it would hit a lake and you could see it, then it would hit Canadian shield and become invisible, then hit a lake and 'rematerialize'. You can't get complacent and think it has broken up just because you can't see it. Glad you are ok.

    My buddy runs a charter fishing boat out of Wanchese N.C. While heading out one morning we ran through a water spout about this size for fun. He has an old 36ft Hatteras Sportfish so its a heavy boat and we hit it cruising about 20knts. The boat handled it fine, but the outriggers were flexing pretty good. It felt like riding a motorcycle in the ran, the water stung a bit, but all in all it was a fun experience.

I especially liked mentioning the anchor locker... it is often forgotten and people secure only the snubber line. Hi Guys, at 4.41 is that Orion in the night sky. I didn’t think you could see it there as I am in Melbourne Australia.
    Also in one of your video about anchors , you put out two of then ,one on Port side and one on STB side, would that be the best solution to overcome the 45 knots you received ?

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 4 года назад +1

      Orion is fairly central: you can see it from 85 north (Alert NU Canada, the most northerly permanently inhabited place on earth, is only 82°30'05") to 75 south (you're Austrian, you can probably give a more relevant example than I can for that one 😉). So basically everyone gets to see it, best is between November and February, but from June through August it's behind the Sun.

    if you were able to know you weren't going to be hurt, i imagine it might be amazingly fun being in a waterspout... even tho i know this is impossible.
    i'm trying to find the most dense waterspout ever taken on video... one one which one might almost be able to ride upwards in a raft. i'm sure my imagination is getting the better of me at this point tho.
    it would be great if one could create a thick waterspout over a big cushiony air mattress (yaknow the type they do stunts with and fall on from way above?)... you turn the air circulation on. the spout is created and it shoots you up. then you fall on the soft bed and slide into the water...
