Agreed, Walksnail is a really nice system for fixed wings. I have tested it the other day and was blown away by the 1080p image in the goggle even though I also fly dji (v1)! The only downside I found for now was a bit laggy/choppy feeling through strong turbulences, it didn’t feel smooth. But turbulences never feel great anyway so not such a big deal…
Nicely done. This will change the way you fly. Less way up high more low obstacle dodging. Being able to see clearly will make you a better pilot! Really it is all about the cost. Walksnail is best bang for the buck. I don't understand why everyone that doesn't have DJI talks about being shackled with the system? Never have thought that once in 4 years of flying it and being satisfied with what I can see and do.
It works for you … that’s what is important. But for those who bought a o3 system it was not that fun recently. But perhaps I can’t evaluate it in the same way as you … do t have the system and I l my tried it
Nice review. Thanks! I'm choosing this over the DJI 03 because the DJI transmitter will not go out of low power mode unless armed by a flight controller. I too fly fixed wing and don't use a flight controller. I can just power the Walksnail Avatar straight from a battery or a UBEC.
Lots of great info, and with some re-consideration of priorities. Will be curious how video quality works with range as you get more stick time, and confidence grows. Video quality is a good match for fixed wings. Particularly how handles sun, clouds. Video with grey skys and snow was great. Have to thank you and Keith (bonafidepirate) for putting out great content. Really helps to establish expectations for seeing real use cases. VTx and camera budget will be a challenge with any digital system with a fleet of more than 3 planes. A good reason to try fly and test as much as possible before ordering more than a couple units. Placement of VTx, Rx, and GPS antennas may need some re-thinking. Think having VTx in fuselage, not far from the FC and battery as you have done is good initial plan, as allow easy swapping, or bench work. Heating could be issue, but having good ventilation should solve. Worse case is can add a micro fan intended for cooling print-head on 3d-printer. They typically 5V, small and light. My solution for the hole analog vtx's leave behind. walksnail doesn't play too nice with gps in close proximity. I do the standard vtx on one wing, radio rx on the other wing and centrally mounted gps for analog wings, so with wings being converted to walksnail and hdzero I've been moving the gps out to the wing. Honest personal opinion about the different digital systems that align with my own although I went for DJI because I was able to get the V2 goggles fairly cheaply (€360) second hand, almost unused. Great video. As you know I'm kind of in the same spot you are, having just started flying this system since the start of the year. I feel very much the same as you about it, most of the concerns I had were valid, just not to the same degree I expected. Kind of hard to go wrong at the current price point too, especially if you're just going to pick up the VRX like I did. I do have a question though. How are you showing the info at the bottom of the video without the recording icons up top? I'm guessing you're recording the output of the goggles doing a playback of recorded files? That's about the only thing I haven't done yet... lol Personally I'd love to have this option while flying too. Those recording icons bug me a bit, I've had to shift my OSD around so it doesn't cover them. I'd switch off the WS internal OSD, but I find the info along the bottom very useful. I'd even be OK if they just moved those icons down to the bottom with the others, maybe in the right side next to the standy/overheating icons... lol Anyway, looking forward to more videos as you get them out! Looking forward to flying more with mine too as the weather allows. I can hardly wait for next fall, hopefully the firmware will be more mature by then with some bugs fixed and added features, ready for those long summer evenings of calm air and nice lighting... ;)

Not buying this and expect every need satisfied at once :) ... That doesn' work the way and we have already figured this out where we came from (e.g. adding range to 5.8GHz or separating vtx from other stuff). So, how about we accept this and get out there and find the answers ? :) Back to your question about the recording: You are using OBS and do a live recording of that! There you'll have the recording icons in the osd .. as it is live. I have a frame grabber and record the osd via HDMI-out and so those red dots are left out. The bar beneat is controllen by a setting called "goggle" .. and offer SHOW ICON/OFF/ FC CONTROL ... didnt figure out, what fc control actually does but well ... I usually have it on and that's where the bar comes from. Fun fact: you can enable and disable the ranging mode which show the estimated range in the bar (or not). I am surprised more people don't get it. DJI sucks as a company and should be avoided. HDzero is a great company but their system is heavily geared toward racing. that leaves walksnail for the majority of people and almost everyone fixed wing due to picture quality and range.

IM not too sure I want to go with waLKSNAIL I have HD ZERO on One Wing and I absolutely hate it but I had HD ZERO on about six quads and love it I love HD ZERO on my quadS because I fly micros. one of my favorite quads is the Darwin freestyle but I heavily modified it by putting HD ZERO on it change the motors and reinforce the lame frame
you should maybe also mention the DJI data leaks and the ability of pretty much anyone with earoscope device to track location of your plane.. in case of more consumer drones even your location and of course for the US market and i’m sure every where else soon, the remote id lock that DJI is definitely planning. They wont allow you to take off without gps from your phone or something so that the government is happy and can track your location. This will 100% come and we have already seen it with avata. Hard to imagine they won’t do this for their other systems
That’s certainly true. But keep in mind how we got here with digital- can’t deny its to the efforts of dji. So I’m happy we have the option of choosing what we’re flying.

@@JustFPV-net I have DJI but wanted to make my analog googles digital as well. I don’t trust DJI for long range flights 😂
The O3 is supposed to cover 23km … which is a lot better than the old ones shutting the lights out at 13.6km
@@JustFPV-net do you know if I could use the true rc antenna’s on my dji goggles?
depends ... if you choose RHCP then I guess you are good! ...but don't take my word for granted here. I use some Antennas dor DJI (soon) ... but LHCP :)
So I noticed you are using the standard Walksnail antennas. From all reports there are pretty bad. I would suggest testing with some good quality antennas like from TrueRC.
Chris .... didn't you recognize the TRUERC Logo on my Antennas? ... :)) The Antennas on the VTX are default ... right, ... and they are not bad at all. But thanks for the hint. I've already got two other antennas for the VTX that will have to be tested. But I doubt it will do a big difference.
@@JustFPV-net From my understanding, only top right antenna on the goggles is transmitting. The other 3 are receive only. As the VTX has the hear the goggles, it's apparently important to have at least one patch on the top right if you're after long range. Unless you've internally swapped the antenna connectors.
Nope … haven’t but as I swapped that one antenna against my 14db patch it was crappy in reception. There is something about always to swap out 2 antennas (1+2 or 3+4) … and I’ll try that
@@JustFPV-net I noticed the trueRC patches but all antennas from walksnail a junk many people have reported
I say we will find out … even Wezley flew the stock antennas out at 30km … they can’t be that bad after all
But o3 is inav supported now!
is it ? ... or is it planned for V6? I'm only aware of that RC1 of INAV6 is out. But good after all that something is happening for you with the O3.
@@JustFPV-net there was a video of Pavel or something about Inav 6 and DJI o3, not sure if it's final release or what they call it but it's promising! :)
Walksnail looks great too man congratulations, it's so good to have all this hd choices!
Indeed- having the choice is good for all of us. O3 is as mentioned cool.
I guess INAV 6 will open up for O3 as mentioned but it’s just not released. But that will happen soon so the wait may be over
I am surprised more people don't get it. DJI sucks as a company and should be avoided. HDzero is a great company but their system is heavily geared toward racing. that leaves walksnail for the majority of people and almost everyone fixed wing due to picture quality and range.
This reflects my thoughts 100% … thanks for your opinion
I just purchased a few months ago the DJI V1 goggles for my wings & PLANES .
I would make no sense for you to change … your are equipped well and that’s good 👍
you should maybe also mention the DJI data leaks and the ability of pretty much anyone with earoscope device to track location of your plane.. in case of more consumer drones even your location and of course for the US market and i’m sure every where else soon, the remote id lock that DJI is definitely planning.
So I’m happy we have the option of choosing what we’re flying.
f dji
Why so harsh?
