We can have up to 1.5 years off after a baby here in canada (dads and adoptive parents included). I can’t imagine anyone else taking care of my baby, what is the point in having kids if your just going to work all the time? It’s a horrible choice to make.

NJ has paid family leave and has had it for years. The downside to it is as it stands right now one only gets 65% of their income per week and it’s capped around $650. It’s also for up to six weeks. There is a bill right now to increase this to receive 85% of your wage, the cap would increase into the $800 range, and it would be for up to 3 months. And right now the yearly cost for us to have this program is only $27.52, which I don’t know about you but I would happily pay this yearly cost if it means I would be able to take paid time off to be able to care for a sick loved one.

CA is the only state with 6 weeks paid family leave for both mom & dad which is part of the CA State Disability Program. Stop saying maternity leave is a "woman's issue". I am a woman and I am childfree! Meanwhile there are men who want to stay at home or take leave. If an employer wants to offer paid leave so be it, but why should everyone pay, unless everyone is entitled to paid leave.

Hollywood movie industry is also to blame for this; movies do not address cost of birth and how to pay for bills on un-paid family/childcare leave, when more then 50% of Americans can't afford $400 surprise bill. TV shows usually picture giving birth in well off white family where it is "blessed" moment (often ocuring around Christmas), and do not give answers when mother will return to work, and if not, how she will afford it since there is no paycheck coming in (and what happens when family is above medicaid threshold?)
