Roof top boxes may be going by the wayside, did have a Tesla guy who camps a lot and has this really nifty hitch mount box that also swivels to the side and the hatch lifts and does not interfere, get awesome mileage as it is behind the Model Y slipstream. I'll see if I can find it!
I really enjoy your videos. I am addicted to Tesla road trip videos. I am hoping to get a Tesla in the near future so it helps a lot watching videos like this. I feel like the Model 3 is more of my price range but seeing the Model Y and how much bigger it is and being able to sleep more comfortably inside. It's a tough decision.
I used to stop in Cordele all the time for my trips from Orlando up to the Atlanta metro area - but since they added Fort Valley (Buc-ees!) and several other V3 stops nearby, the Cordele stop is less common - especially since it is a solid mile off the highway. That grocery store does have bathrooms and it is nice to grab some fruit to eat while waiting on charging. I have also tried getting service at that Sonic - but not the best experience last time. I actually really like that Jasper charging location - V3, right off the highway, snacks, bathrooms, fast food (Wendy's), and charging stalls away from everything else (low risk of ICE-ing). Only catch is that the Tesla nav wants to route you through town for some reason (perhaps just me) - weird. I try to avoid Ocala if I can. Charging a bit longer in Jasper to make it to the Service Plaza is normally how I do it. Tesla nav can be a little conservative sometimes and insist in stopping earlier - sometimes I have to manually reset the trip midway in the drive for Tesla to calibrate for the longer leg. I wish this was more configurable.
This is perfect, we have an order for our model Y. We are in Orlando and my family is in Cincinnati and Indy. So this would we the trip we would take if we drove it!
Excellent video. I might have missed it but what was the total cost of the super chargers? I drive 110 miles a day but I charge at home so I save a ton but thinking of making a bigger trip soon so just watching some Tesla travel videos and it seems nice to stop every 2-3 hours to stretch the legs for us and the dogs.
Driving to go skiing with the skis and snowboards on the roof rack my wife made it to her first Supercharging stop with 3%. The following trips we mounted the equipment to a hitch mounted rack. The last 5 trips she has been getting to that she Supercharger with 24 to 25 percent. Highly recommend using the hitch accessories when possible.
Maybe it’s a stupid question. With you being the only one in the car…Would it not make sense to drop the rear seats and place the Cargo Box inside the car? I can’t judge the size, but it looks like it would fit if you slide it in backwards. And if your trunk was full, maybe throw some of those items in the box to save some space. I wonder how much faster and cheaper the trip would have been.
Loved your video. We just ordered a Model Y and hope to take advantage of the income tax break. We live in Ridge Manor FL for 6 months and central Michigan for 6 months so we make a longer version of your trip 2 times a year. We have not yet had the Tesla charger experience and are looking forward to the trip. Will be watching your channel for more Model Y information.
Roadtrips are always fun. After few months living in FL, how you like the area? We went there to house shop back in June 2022 and we had Clermont, Davenport and Saint Cloud as top counties to live in.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Got it. What about property taxes, car insurance and such? I saw that Clermont has a pretty good school district. Thank you for sharing btw.
Thanks, I take delivery next week performance Y, my question is why did you charge only to 75 and not to at least 90, which would have give extra 15% and possibly less stops?
It takes too long. You can go from 10-70% in about 20ish minutes. 70-100 is 30 minutes. Charging speed slows down significantly the fuller the battery is.
You seem to overcharge quite a bit for a an experienced EV road tripper. I usually unplug when the car says I’ll be at the next charger with 8-10% and if I drive 75-80mph I get there with 2-5% depending on the weather/conditions. Great videos btw ! Keep it up

Hey BTG, have you ever tried fitting you model 3 max pider floor mats in the Y? I am working to upgrade my 3 to Y and would love to save some $$ and reuse the M3 floor mats wherever possible in Y(Frunk, sub trunk, front rear seats). Not looking for perfect fit but “good enough. I was thinking they might fit since the vehicles are similar in many ways. Would love your thoughts.
Curious why you went with a roof box over a hitch mounted cargo box? I've heard the range hit is less with the latter and seems like it would be easier to access. Love your videos!
Does the hitch mount effect backing up to tesla chargers at all? Serious question. We take delivery of our MY sometime in February and we're considered a hitch mount, but weren't sure if that complicates things for charging at all. The hitch mount would be preferred as our other vehicle, a Toyota highlander, would also see the hitch mount used at times and that car is definitely a bit too tall to access the cargo on top. It would also eliminate having to buy roof racks for either vehicle!

When doing a solo road trip, how did you find the hotel with a destination charger and make the reservation while you were driving? Did you do it while charging or were you somehow able to do it while you were driving?
Just wondering why you didn't charge up to 100 every time? I am doing a similar trip to orlando from NJ, 7 times seems little steep in stopping, was planning 4-5 times
Almost all EVs have a "charge curve" where the battery charges more slowly the closer to full it gets. So, simply put, if you have to add 100kWh to the car battery during a very long road trip, you can do it in one of three ways (efficiency in this is related to time spent charging): Least efficient: Stop when the battery is half-full and top it off to 100%. You basically spend all of your time at the slow end of the charge curve. Not very efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and top it off to 100%. You spend a lot of time at the slow end of the charge curve. Reasonably efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and charge it to 80%. Most efficient: Stop when the battery is mostly empty and charge it *just enough* to make it to the next convenient charging station. Note: If your Supercharger stops are way off the highway, making charging stops frequently can become less efficient due to the time spent getting to the station. So the best trip plans involve balancing the number of stops (more = more time spent at higher charge rates, fewer = less time spent getting to stations and hooking up to them). Of course, if you are stopping for lunch halfway and have an hour or more to kill, then stopping in the middle and charging empty-to-full becomes optimal again. Always think of ways to make your charging time be time you are also spending doing something else, like bathroom breaks, snacks, walks, and meals.
I drive from Connecticut to Florida usually twice a year in my Model Y. Getting to the Supercharger in the single digits and unplugging at around 70% reduces the total time for the trip. Unless you are having a meal at a restaurant whit waiting, then let it charge until you are finished with your meal. Also make sure that when driving to a supercharger the vehicle is navigating to it because it will precondition the battery which improves the charging speed drastically specially when the temperature is low.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I thought superchargers charged at 150, these were charging around 60 if I remember correctly. I’m thinking of buying a Tesla so new to all of this.

I don't worry at all about how far I can go on a charge. I only need enough range to get to the next Supercharger and the car worries about which one that will be. For local trips I have my Chevy Bolt (which, by the way, I HIGHLY recommend as a commuter - it's probably the best value-for-dollar in reasonably long range EVs out there, but is greatly hampered by very slow DCFC - it is capable of doing road trips if you are very patient - I've done it before and it's "okay").
