The 10 freeway is did more damage, the way I understand it. The 10 split Central Ave. Black folks had Central Ave sewn up into downtown LA. Black owned and run businesses from doctors and lawyers offices to banks and theaters. There's the first Black firehouse still standing on the corner of 14th and Central. It's now a museum. There are placards up and down Central Ave on some of the light poles that tell a lot of the history of the area.

I'm a lifelong resident of South Central LA, the Central Avenue Corridor in particular. I went to both Holmes Ave and Ascot Elementary school. Graduated from Carver Jr high and Jefferson High.
I grew up thru the 80's and to witness how the Black population has diminished, it's saddening. Only because the atmosphere has changed. Being neighborly is pretty much extinct, mainly because of the language barriers. There are so many people in and out of the neighborhood that you don't really get a real rapport with them. The others who are also lifelong residents, it's all good with them because we all went to school together, hung out, played ball, partied, etc.
Thanks for this interview Alex. Flex is one of the most thorough.

For the most of us this is not our history. Our people have been on this Continent "Turtle Island" since the beginning. Look at "Luiza", the young lady found frozen. She was found in Pristine condition. Archaeologist have stated that Luiza was a negro. That young lady is said to have been over 13k years old. That's long before any of the so-called "Native Americans" reached these lands.
It's unfortunate that we have allowed Western Education to influence us in such a negative way that we have forgotten our ancestors.
American compulsory education leaves out the description given by Verrazano. In 1524, Verrazano said that the Natives looked like people of Ethiopia. Columbus in his writings said the same thing.
If one takes a trip to South America you will discover our people all over. On their pottery, they have pictures depicting black people with dreads, corn rolls. The Olmec heads which many think are African aren't African. These are depictions of the Natives who lived on the continent at the time.
Many of us speak on "JUNETEENTH" as the day that our people were set free in Texas. However, those people while "Black" weren't "African". These people were the "Karakawa" Indians who roamed from Louisiana and Galveston,Texas. They too were described as being Black. Yet, we aren't taught none of this in school.
What about "Satchuriona"? He was a great chief of what the Spanish and French called the Natives. He too was Black. He ruled what were called the Mississippi Indians. Yet, none of this is ever brought up, not in Elementary, Junior H.S., High School or in College. The only thing they teach is Slavery, servitude.
If our people built this country (and they did, no doubt) then how would they have learned machinery, architecture, etc.? They wouldn't. Unless these people had been builders. Our people were master craftsmen. They were Engineers, Mathematicians, Scientist. They didn't just acquire that knowledge through compulsory education. They were instilled with knowledge. Not from Africa but right here in America.
Our people built the Cahokia pyramid. Although they tore down the one in St. Louis, the one in Cahokia, Illinois is still up. Yet, another thing which we're not taught in schools.
Won't even go through the Slave trade which has been debunked. They've gone from 12 million to roughly 60,000. Out of those 60,000 the majority are said to have been sent to South America.
