a133m210 - to be fair the battery was free (made up from laptop batteries) so if you added that it would get nearer £150 to £250 for a half decent range - let me know how you get on with the regen if you go down that road
ChayD - agreed, I just got a 20AH 36v to do 17.2 miles on battery only (cycling to start and hill assist) and 31 miles when I peddle as well. Brilliant!
I bought one of these. Brackets bent and snapped chain at first attempt ...ha ha! Needs a sprocket with about 6 times the number of teeth, not sure it'll then have enough torque though. I look forward to finding out.
Yes, its a terrible kit, but you can make it work with a 13 tooth fixed motor gear, a gas motorized bike hub adapter, sproket and 410 chain. Good luck!
interesting video, as I too am looking into various conversion kits. Just wondering though, was it absolutely necessary to keep the derailleur as it is essentially obsolete with only having one gear. Could this have worked by just shortening the chain?
Hi Mat Mills - The derailleur kept the chain inline with the sprocket and still allowed me to use the three on the front crank - so I got the use of some of the gearing to assist the motor. Thanks for the question

I could keep my rims and just despoke the supplied motor wheel and respoke it to my 29inch rims... can't see why that wouldn't work. But won't be tackling that just yet. thats gonna be a project for the new year.

this is most efective on small bikes with small wheels and it can go faster than a bigger wheels . change your sprocket to big because small sprocket makes the motor difficult in running
Just watched an American fellow with a huge you tube channel and an impeccable understanding of mechanical and electrical theory fail to get this cheap n nasty kit to fit. Then on to this British fellow with a socket set and a hammer, achieve success in his garden. Not even a Gary'ge in sight!
to be fair - mine lasted around two weeks before I lost the chain. It's not robust but is fun in a "will I make it home today?" type of way. Thanks for the comment though... I'm thinking of turning it into a boost board or scooter
I Think you not need change the wheel, just use the higher fear instead of lower gear ( let it to the eletric motor ) I just do it with my bike and it works perfectly and I still can use some speeds of my gear .
Interesting video. I've bought a 36v 350W version of the same design. Is the controller intelligent, in that does it have a low voltage cut-off or will it let you keep draining the battery despite a low voltage? The reason I'm asking is that I've taken a look in the controller and I think if switch out the capacitors, they're currently 470uf 50v for 63v ones I'm thinking that I can use a 48v battery instead of 36v but this will only work if the controller doesn't care about the battery voltage.
Hi Duane - Caveat- I think this is how it works but it's been 18mnths since I did this project (I must get back to it). The controller does care about the low voltage - but low voltage means "how long is the life". If I drain my 3.6v nominal cell continuously to 2.9 -3v it doesn't last long. My controller will start my low voltage indicator flashing around 3.4v and cut all voltage to the motor at around 3.2 -3.3v - I'm all manual power now. You can use a 36v or 48v controller with a 24v battery, it will generally work out what you have. What you can't do is use a 48v wheel with a 36v controller as the wheel will pull too many amps and burn out your capacitors. I think that's what I recall and tested. Hope it guides any research
I'm using a 36 volt battery with a 250 watt motor and controller with a similar kit, it works fine except my battery indicator never shows I have a low battery as it's set for a 24 volt battery.
Wow, you lucked out. Everything on my (36v 350w) build has been a major headache. First, the 3 tiny screws that mount the motor to the bracket pulled the threads out the motor. I tapped the holes and used larger bolts, plus an additional bracket to keep everything together. Now, everything is good with the hardware, and now its blowing 20A fuses. Scratching my head.
now they threaded adapter is unscrewing itself, the one between the two freewheel gears. It just backthreads and falls off.I have tried it with and without the lock ring. Its just a bad design. I don;t think this kit work unless you have it mounted on the reverse side with a different gear ring setup/. such a headache!
@@jonny5ive167 Did you solved it? I guess it was the vibration that loosen the connector. In that case you could use threadlocker or super glue and see what happens

This kit might work for a 110 lb indian guy for a few miles after he welds the adapters on, but the kit sold as is on ebay is trash. For those who are not total know-it-all dillholes that watch a couple advertisements and think they know everything, I managed to convert the bike using motorized (gas) drive train parts, and the bike works great so far for about 60 miles and counting. I still don't recommend the kit, but its a great tinkering project. The hub motor kits are far better. I will do a video soon. Thanks.
so you changed the front sprocket? i am facing the same problem with the chain... and I am unsure how to get arround it... they surely sell rear freewheels compatible with 18 speed chains
Hi Robert - I'm thinking that the 18 speed chain may require replacing like I did as it maybe two thin for the standard size sprocket that comes with the kit. These kits are designed for the average shopper type bike and not western 18 speed road/mountain bikes hence why the mounting plate didn't quite fit the A frame at the back of the bike
I have the smae kit but it is very slow and can't go uphill without assisting it by pedaling is that normal or do you think I might have a problem with the baterrry or something? how fast did you get with this kit without pedaling ?

its a shame you couldn't have a 36v motor on one side and a 24v on the other, have the 36v motor feeding the battery and the battery feeding the 24v motor, that way you will be able to have a self charging bike ? i know its a bit far fetched but i think crazy stuff like that.

The 2 sprockets on the rear axle is totally wrong. Only 1 sprocket mate. Of course your needing the correct BATTERY to make her go….zippp! Also, an amp meter would help test the lines as to what line works what without frying stuff with too much electric power. I watched an Asian guy install same as yours. I have his video. He had a 36volt motor. That’s 3 12volt lead batteries. Later he just used 1 36volt lithium to extend range + less weight
Well, yeah, if you use one sprocket that's easy, but then you can't use it as a real bike. Most people want both drive trains functional. I recommend people who are considering this kit, to buy a motorized (gas) bike hub adapter, 36 tooth rear gear, 410 chain, 13 tooth fixed gear replacement on the motor, and swap the whole thing over to left hand side.
20 mins in.. Chain is too long.. Needs to be shortened.. I'm way too late, but...anyway.. Plus.. you could have just maybe ditched the derailleur and shortened the chain to fit your single cog since derailleurs are mean to shift gears and you were turning it into a fixed gear. You would have needed a chain break/removal tool though. Regardless, you got it sorted. Awesome kit though. Nice and helpful for all of us looking into tinkering with this kit. Thanks. :D
What you have there is the exact same motor and controller that was on the discontinued Currie E-Zip bike. I have an E-Zip that I bought about 10 years ago and still runs. I also have one brand new extra motor that came off another E-Zip I bought at a flea market long ago.
Hi Gitarzan - just had a quick look at some reviews on the E-Zip. That's exactly it - it's heavy and clunky and mines worse but I just got a 36v 20AH battery arrive from China and I've made some small modifications so we'll see how we do from now on before my front-hub conversion kit arrives. Hi a133m210 - I haven't yet tried them but they would probably help a little on down hill slopes. Not so much breaking as on a bike your stopping distance is really short. If you used reactive type regen then the cheap end might not kick in as fast as you would like :-(
Bang Crash Tinkle ! I changed my controller for one i got on amazon for £33 brainpower brand, I turned on regen and wired to a button. It's pretty good.. Obviously more variable than a physical brake but im happy with the reduction in wear and tear I just touch the front brake briefly to come to a complete halt instead of using the pads.
Hi Lordan... tried that at first... problem was putting the drive chain on one of the sprockets made the pedals spin un-believable fast and remove the first two to three layers of skin off your shins. That put the project back a few hours
yes you are allmost there engine sprocket 12 or 14 ish wheel sprocket 48 you have to make it up from othere parts keep at it you will get there you do have to spend a bit of money but nothing like the cost of a e bike good luck
Pellag - you'd need a lot of modification - in principle anything can be done but if you want a solid build with derailleur intact use either a front hub upgrade or a mid hub option. Front hub is cheaper. If I was to do this again I'd measure up a shopper basket bike - it seems to be more suited to the conversion
Very interesting and a good job. Only two problems as your bike was not pedal assist only you were breaking the law. As it was driven by a throttle you should have had insurance, road tax and a helmet to go on public roads. However well done.
@@CalmoOmlac I honestly doubt the punishment for getting caught in the uk would really be that dramatic, he would probably get a caution and the bike confiscated, maybe a fine at the most.
I think I have the same kit. No instructions, one sprocket on the motor, a big one, like to attach to the spokes but no other hardware for that, and a sprocket like shown to go on the wheel. Call me confused!
Robert: I had to buy a second sprocket and then 'sort of' squeeze them onto the cylinder that then went on the hub... not stable and oh so Heath Robinson
Hi Steve - The battery was a DIY from old laptop batteries. It was roughly rated at 24v 5AH and the configuration was 7s3p. The batteries ranged from 2.4Ah to 1.7Ah for capacity so 21 batteries all in. I have a video showing the construction. Thanks for the question and good luck
Angelo... now where's the fun in that? However, I will be looking into that kind of conversion later. I just wanted to find out how these things are supposed to work and the level of work involved in using them. All part of the learning curve
Love this video. SO real, proper tinkering, proper trial and error. And it does work! Just not great. You definitely need to get rid of all the gear change mechanisms though. After watçhing this I learned that I personally wouldn't buy one, but can see how it would be pretty usable for some folks doing short commutes.

I wonder if the standard shopper bikes that seem to be common in the Far East have a different rear frame shape that fits this standard motor mounting plate? But that was the point of the video, to show what difficulties you will encounter. I might try it on a shopper next
Hi Dilan - I was pretty close to the budget. The motor kit was around £50. The bike was £40. The new chain and replacement sprocket were £20 so £110 all in. The battery I built myself from old laptop batteries. Not too bad

sheist, i was using a car 20A fuse rated at 12v = only 240 w. Now i can safely up the fuse. fingers crossed!

I run full out on a 48v the 36v 450 opposite side motor kit. With a 1000w 48v controller as the kit comes with 36v only type with 50v capacitors.

You talk about volts but the amps are just as important
I think you don't have to remove your old 7 speed cog..you can use it instead..the cog on the kit.

You don't need a derailer on the rear, it complicates the build and you have no gears to change...chuck it

Hi Steve - The battery was a DIY from old laptop batteries. It was roughly rated at 24v 5AH and the configuration was 7s3p. The batteries ranged from 2.4Ah to 1.7Ah for capacity so 21 batteries all in. I have a video showing the construction. Thanks for the question and good luck

For all the time and money wasted and all the hassle you went thur, you could have bought a conversion kit including wheel that actually works.
Angelo... now where's the fun in that? However, I will be looking into that kind of conversion later. I just wanted to find out how these things are supposed to work and the level of work involved in using them. All part of the learning curve
Love this video. SO real, proper tinkering, proper trial and error. And it does work! Just not great. You definitely need to get rid of all the gear change mechanisms though. After watçhing this I learned that I personally wouldn't buy one, but can see how it would be pretty usable for some folks doing short commutes.
@@peterharrington8709 Thanks Peter for this... And you're right. It doesn't work as well as some of the conversion RUclips videos suggest. I wonder if the standard shopper bikes that seem to be common in the Far East have a different rear frame shape that fits this standard motor mounting plate? But that was the point of the video, to show what difficulties you will encounter. I might try it on a shopper next
Trouble is that you don't learn anything. Yes, it might be easier but there's no sense of accomplishment in taking the easy route.

Hi Dilan - I was pretty close to the budget. The motor kit was around £50. The bike was £40. The new chain and replacement sprocket were £20 so £110 all in. The battery I built myself from old laptop batteries. Not too bad
