I had an idea for how to know how much these shrink. If you mark one like a ruler with millimeters then shrink it you can use it to measure what size the full size piece needs to be to shrink down to fit in a project.

And it's good to make both horizontal and vertical markings, since shrinking isn't necessarily even in both directions.

Last year, for Mother's Day, my daughter's Pre-K teacher had her class make their mom's a Shrinky Dink handprint keychain, with their name written on it and the year. I have it on my keys. I think she used acrylic paint, had the kids dip their hand in the paint, place it on the Shrinky Dink, then she baked them. The paint has a lot of texture, but won't come off. I love it so much!
That was a cool idea! Way better than the macaroni cards we made when I was a kid. Lol!

Just make sure it's #6 plastic, as all of the other clear plastics, which are more common, don't have this property.

When my husband and I first got married, I made up our own currency called "honey money". I drew bees and other cute things on circles of shrink plastic, and told my husband that we could use them to trade favors. I think I only used them a couple of times, but it was cute, at least, as a fun idea to get us to think about currencies and our relationship.
There are shrink plastics that you can print on with an inkjet printer. The colors seem weak until they shrink, then the intensity is amazing!
Since they shrink consistently, I used them to make game pieces. They are excellent for making toy pieces like tail lights for GI Joe cars or winders with tiny people in them for miniature buildings.
This is the best thing I've seen in months. I think I may use this to upgrade board game components. A new hobby to be sure. at work I have an oven and nacho trays. and I carry posca markers in my bag every day.

Man, this reminds me of when my brother and I used to put chip packets in the oven as a kid - they shrunk like mad. This seems a little more interesting than shrinking a packet of Twisties though. :P
I especially love the domed pieces, the resin really gives them a sweet shine!

I love the combination of the shrink plastic and UV resin! Gives me something to make with my shrinky dink plastic that doesn't feel like something I could easily ruin
I once made a dog tag for my beloved pooch that passed away some years ago using "Shrinky Dink" and that was eventually replace with one of those vending machine tags found at your local pet shop.

Because he is so soothing and peaceful which is what we need most in this world today.
I did this last year when my friend Lee (IceyCat25) passed away. Except I used a printer to print out a bunch of his logo. After baking and resin covering them, I added lapel pins the backs and gave them away to his family and friends.
The plastic curling in onto itself is a issue when baking. So you do have to keep an eye on it. Even with parchment paper on top. Adding UV resin on top does help, but it can be a pain when bubbles form while drying. I ended up skipping the resin due to this.
I'm now working on 3D printing Lee's logo as a key charm for his family. Once done, I'll put the STL file up for free download.

Are alcohol markers useful for similar purposes as alcohol dyes? That might be useful for something I've been trying to do.
I'm not positive, but a lot of people dip permanent markers into alcohol to make alcohol ink.
Great seeing you here. I'm gathering items to recreate your HHO generator.
I use alcohol based dye stains to tint shellac or use parallel to shellac finishes. Alcohol tends to be a great carrier for color because of its quick evaporation.
Is it true that it might fade over time?
A lot of quality alc. markers will be sold as "dye-based markers". Basically a bunch of pigments suspended in alc. with a felt tip for application. So to answer your question, yes. However, depending on what you're try'na do, you might be better of buying you some marker refill (Graffiti brands are usually the cheapest AND high quality). It'll pro'lly be cheaper than buying the fancy shmancy stuff you'd find in the painting supply/hardware store.
If you're really interested in experimenting with this topic, a lot of graffiti writers used to make their own inks by collecting old, dried out markers and soaking 'em in a bottle of rubbing alc., adding in whatever fine dyes and pigments they could get their hands on. Everything from super finely ground charcoal to leather dyes from dads shoe polishing kit. I'm lucky enough to be in art school now, and will get me some dyes from the print departement and textile departement I'll add to my homemade dye-based alc. inks I put in my dried up markers.
Disclaimer: I also use a lot of old parker/staedtler/... ink refills from garage sales. These still contain a bunch of nasty solvents that can't be used no more. Think things like Solv-X (Xylene). Depending on what you's is about to use them for, this might be something to look out for. Like, it ain't good for yo' skin.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions y'all might still have, got a lot a lot of practical experience with alc. markers and inks (can't help with the chemistry side of things though...).
If y'all looking for good websites to buy alc. markers, again, give the graffiti suppliers a look. Bombingscience, spraydaily, mtnworld, ... These are good places to look. If longevity isn't an issue, get you some cheapo alc. markers from the dollar store, have also had some surprisingly good results with the cheapest of the cheap markers. After all, it's just alc. with some dye-based pigments. Ain't much you can do to F it up. Worst case the colour won't be exactly the same as on the box and it'll run dry quicker. But for pennies per marker...
@@MaybeitsmeJulia Over time, yes. But when you use them in a baking setup, the pigment will get a lot more concentrated and won't fade as quick. You could also look for "artist quality" markers or "archival" markers. Been using a lot of Farber-Castle lately. They've got an amazing array of colours and a nice small brush tip. They've got some sort of UV-proofing (that's what'll make 'em last, stop 'em from fading). I know the painter David Hockney uses them for his work.
Gotta say one of the best/most entertaining craft RUclipsrs. Always solid content.

I don’t know when Shrinky Dinks forts came out, but I did some I the early ‘70s. It was fun then and even more fun now. I still have a couple of things I made stashed in a small box of treasures. Thanks for reintroducing them. I like the idea of using food container plastics to make things, best recycling idea. Great video!

thanks for the basic craftin' videos, Crafsman. I'm working with school kids and it's a fine line between coming up with arts & crafs projects that are new and exciting for them but that are easy for them to succeed at, while also being within our meager budget.
